Technical Support Technical Support is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Call 1-877-832-4867, or use the e-mail support form. Answers to the most common issues are found in the Knowledge Base by clicking Help, found at the top of every student Web site.

Feedback   Each week I will provide grades or scores and comments on assignments within 7 days of the due date. After I send feedback each week, I will post a notification in the Main forum.

Certificate of OriginalityThe University places a high priority on maintaining academic integrity and ensuring that proper credit is being given for others’ words and ideas used in the development of your written assignments. In order to follow this mission of academic honesty and responsibility, the University has implemented the Certificate of Originality document to increase awareness of academic integrity. This document can be found in the Course Materials forum. It should be completed by typing your name in the appropriate field. You will be required to attach this document for all assignments. When you post an assignment to the Assignments link, also post an electronically signed copy of the Certificate of Originality at the same time. No assignment will be accepted for grading without submission of the Certificate of Originality.

Assignments     Each assignment must be accompanied by the Certificate of Originality. No assignments will be accepted without the Certificate of Originality.

Each week I will provide you with a rubric and an assignment in the Course Materials. A rubric is a grading guide, and provides essential information for successfully completing the assignment.

Page 3: SCI 162 Syllabus

STUDENTS SHOULD REVIEW THE RUBRIC BEFORE COMPLETING THE ASSIGNMENT. You cannot successfully complete the assignment without reviewing the rubric. Each assignment is graded on the following:

The answer referenced the question, and any assessment, resource or activity used to complete the assignment.

The answer provided specific detail and met the minimum word requirement as outlined in the rubric.

The answer was complete and utilized correct sentence formatting, spelling, grammar and punctuation with no more than two errors total.

The assignment was submitted correctly, and was accompanied by the Certificate of Originality.

Assignments need to be formatted as a .doc (.docx), or .ppt (.pptx) file. Please make sure your work is in the right file format so I can read it. Scanned or faxed work is not acceptable. It is your responsibility to ensure that your work is properly posted with attachments in the correct format.

Pay attention to word count requirements assignments. Salutations and signature blocks are outside of the word count. Additionally, as reference lists vary by student and project, they are outside of word count requirements. Title pages are also not considered in word count requirements.

Where to Submit Your AssignmentsAssignment Section: This is where you will submit all formal assignments, along with your Certificate of Originality. Navigate to the Assignments link on eCampus. Locate the link to submit your assignment as an attachment.

Late Assignments Late assignments receive a 20% deduction for each day they are late. If assignments are not posted by 11:59 p.m. M.S.T. on the day they are due they are considered late. Assignments more than 2 days late will not be accepted.

You may notice that our school servers may be a bit “finicky” from time to time. Check the server status with this link: http://status.phoenix.edu/ecampusstatus/. However, technological issues or University of Phoenix server troubles are not considered valid grounds for late assignment submission. If you are unable to connect to the University of Phoenix server and upload an assignment to your Individual forum, send a copy of the assignment to your instructor’s inbox or alternate email address as proof that you attempted to post the assignment on time. In your email, you must tell your instructor that you were unable to connect to the University of Phoenix server. You must then upload the assignment to your Individual forum at your earliest opportunity. Send assignments to your instructor’s inbox ONLY if the University of Phoenix server is down. Instructors cannot, by University of Phoenix Online policy, grade an assignment that comes to their personal email. It must be posted in your Individual forum to count for grading purposes. These policies are necessary because any contact outside of class forums cannot be verified or archived.

PlagiarismI enforce the school’s Academic Honesty policy. Plagiarism falls into that category and it is applicable to ALL of your work: DQ responses, participation, and assignments. This course involves using the research, analysis, critical thinking, organization, writing, and documentation skills that you learned in past courses and will use in future courses. You will be expected to collect information from several sources and restate it in your own words. Please note that:

Page 4: SCI 162 Syllabus

1.   All quotations must be properly formatted; sources of quotes and paraphrases must be cited in the body of the papers and presentations. "Using more than two words from the original without quotation marks is plagiarism as is paraphrasing too closely to the original wording" (Writing Style Handbook, p. 13). All quotes require a page or paragraph number. Failure to properly format quotations will result in fewer points being earned.

2.   Essays (including papers) should not contain more than 15% quoted content. If quotes exceed that amount, fewer points will be earned due to "poor scholarship." Essays that contain more than 30% quotes may be rejected and zero points earned.

3.  Paraphrasing means reading something and then expressing those thoughts in your own words. Paraphrasing is the preferred method to use in this course. Always cite the source of paraphrased data.

I submit random student written assignments to the plagiarism checker. The faculty version is a more powerful tool in that it accesses a database of previously submitted work.  It is your responsibility to ensure that your papers are appropriately written and documented, not just by the standards of the student plagiarism checker, but by any standard.

Because your assignments are supposed to be original work, expect a penalty if more than 15% of an assignment is quoted (including slightly edited quotes). Projects that exceed 15% will be penalized proportionally. Over 30% is unacceptable. This means that you will earn a zero.

Discussion Questions (DQ) and Substantive Participation Postings

Discussion Questions: At least 3 of the Discussion Questions (DQs) must be answered each week to earn Discussion Question points. These 3 discussion question answers will not count towards the 8

Page 5: SCI 162 Syllabus

substantive postings needed for the week. Only posts in the Main classroom forum for the current week’s discussion count towards your class participation score.

Discussion Question (DQ) responses need be at least 150 words. Pay attention to word count requirements for DQs. Salutations and signature blocks are outside of the word count. Additionally, as reference lists vary by student and project, they are outside of word count requirements.

When you answer a Discussion Question, please post your response to the threads provided in the Main Forum. Please do not start a new thread for Discussion Questions in the Main Forum. I expect your Discussion Question responses to reflect critical thought. Whenever possible, please try to relate the course content to real-world applications from your work experience. Similar to your written assignments, you must cite and reference all outside material used in your answer. This includes our course materials. In addition, please proofread your posts carefully. Using proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling is expected.

I appreciate when students become absorbed in the discussions. Some of our discussions are sure to ignite your passions, opinions, and concerns. Try to stay “on topic” and recall the purpose of the DQ. Discussion notes need to be “on topic” to count for credit.

Substantive Participation Posts: This course requires that you participate each week with at least 2 substantive messages that must be posted on 4 separate days during the week.  This equates to a minimum of 8 substantive messages occurring on 4 different days per week. All substantive postings must be:

A. At least 100 words in length;B. Follow the ABC format; and C. Utilize correct sentence formatting, spelling, grammar and punctuation with no more than two

errors total.

So what is a substantive post? It must be more than just a sentence agreeing with a prior post. It must do more than just give another example. A substantive post is a number of sentences that build from an earlier post, perhaps disagreeing and explaining the source of the disagreement, extending the idea presented in the earlier post and adding new content or responding with a clarification of a thought or example.

A substantive post should take you several minutes to research, write, proofread and spell check.  Follow the ABC format for substantive participation posts:  Acknowledge the writer and something the individual has said; Build by adding personal experience or observations or relevant information from the text or an outside source; Conclude and Continue the conversation with a question to the class that continues the conversation.  Here is a silly example of responding to a classmate, using the ABC model:

"John, I really agree with your comment "you can't teach an old dog new tricks."  (A-acknowledge the speaker and what the person said.)  In the past when I have worked with old dogs and tried to teach them new tricks they would just roll over and go to sleep.  It was so frustrating! However, I have found that I can teach old dogs old tricks, and new dogs new tricks. This information came from www.olddognewtrick.edu. (B-build by adding personal experience, insight or information from text book or other reliable sources)  Has anyone else had this experience they can share?  (C-conclude with a question to the individual or class to move the conversation forward.)

Let me say that there is nothing "wrong" with unsubstantive posts.  Saying "I agree" or "Good point" or "Hang in there!" is positive and supportive feedback for your classmates.  HOWEVER, these posts do not count toward your participation grade.  You still need to have at least 2 substantive posts on at least 4 different days during each week of class.

Page 6: SCI 162 Syllabus

Only posts in the Main classroom forum will count towards your class participation score.  Only posts made in reference to the current week’s topic will count towards participation score. You may notice ?, S, and U symbols next to your posts. These symbols mean:

Blue ? = If you see this sign by a response you made to a Discussion Question and/or Something to Think About Question it means I have read your post and it met the minimum required criteria.  The post has been marked and will count towards your Discussion Questions and/or Something to Think About Question for the week.

Green S = If you see this sign by a post you have made it means I have read your post and it met the minimum required criteria.  The post has been marked as substantive for participation points.

Red U = If you see this sign by a post you have made it means I have read your response and it does not meet the standard required for credit.  This isn’t intended to mean the post is a “bad” post, just that it will not be counted for credit.

Something to Think About Questions: A response to the Something to Think About question is required. All responses to the Something to Think About question must be at least 100 words in length, indicate completion of assigned activity/reading, and utilize correct sentence formatting, spelling, grammar and punctuation with no more than two errors total.

Something to Think About QuestionUtilizing the internet or World Wide Web has made researching any topic a possibility. However, even this resource is not without its problem areas. Identifying credible websites and authors, ensuring the accuracy of information, and verifying the timeliness of information are all issues facing the world wide public as it continues to research the web.  I found a very good article (posted on the web of course) regarding determining the credibility of websites. Visit the George Mason University Education and Technology webpage article Criteria to Evaluate the Credibility of WWW Resources. Review the article (http://mason.gmu.edu/~montecin/web-eval-sites.htm) and post a response to the following questions by clicking Reply: What new information did you learn from the article? Choose one of the nine (9) guideline questions used to verify web information and explain why you feel it is important. Explain the differences between the five (5) types of websites listed.
