Welcome to The Telegraph Bath Children’s Literature Festival Schools Programme. These events are for schools and home educated children and fill the Guildhall in Bath with an array of amazing authors, illustrators and poets and the energy of hundreds of children. Join us for fact-finding missions, songs, drawing and more than a few laughs along the way. We start the programme with the much celebrated, effervescent Julia Donaldson, putting on a brilliant show. We then journey through the week celebrating the adventures and discoveries that books can take us on. Explore time travel with Matt Brown, join Gareth P Jones for a party with dinosaurs, go on an epic Bronze age adventure with Michelle Paver, discover how the Magna Carta began an 800 year fight for freedoms with Christopher Lloyd and hear incredible stories from Africa with Atinuke. And that’s not all! We also have the hilarious Francesca Simon, rugby-tastic Tom Palmer, founder of Storysacks Neil Griffiths and to finish the week we have the final tale in the How to Train Dragon series with Cressida Cowell. Alongside this we have a number of exciting authors including Sally Gardner, David Almond, Tony Bradman and John Boyne available to visit your school during the festival to spark and inspire young imaginations and offer fascinating insights into the world of writing books. For more information please see page 14. We hope that you will join us for these action packed events and look forward to seeing you at the Festival. Hazel Plowman Sarah Dowie Learning & Participation Coordinator Learning & Participation Officer A message from our Artistic Directors Gill & John McLay: Children’s books have been enjoying a golden age in recent years. The recent announcement that children’s books now represent the majority of print books sold in the UK, and that last year they dominated the bestseller charts, is wonderful news. To those of us that work within the children’s publishing industry, it feels like the rest of the world have been let in on a secret that we’ve been keeping for long time! Books are the gateway to imagination, and allow children to explore worlds and ask questions. To many, they are just beautiful, delightful and heart-warming stories or fantastical adventures with imaginary heroes, but they should be underestimated at your peril. Children’s books are the very foundation of our learning and they help children to grow with greater understanding and knowledge. In a world that seems to get smaller by the day, their role has never been more important. For all these reasons, the ten days that host the Bath Children’s Literature Festival become all the more treasured and important. With events that help young readers and families to explore and discover, it becomes very clear why the festival feels very much at the heart of our community. For our visiting families the festival is, above all, fun. It’s ‘laugh out loud’ funny, it’s meeting great characters, seeing illustrations come to life, hearing how it’s done, meeting literary heroes and so much more. But, just like the books themselves, it should never be underestimated. Every event makes a difference and each child’s experience is important and together we help to let more people in on that well-kept secret... Come and join in.

Atinuke Amazing Stories from Africa 11.30 – 12.15pm Guildhall H3

About the Event This is a very special storytelling event - traditional oral stories told by Nigerian-British storyteller and children's book author Atinuke. The stories Atinuke tells are centuries old. They have travelled across the African continent and beyond. Carried in the hearts and minds of the generations of Africans that have cherished and shaped them. A unique and inspring experience that will be remembered by all the children attending for a long time to come.

About the Author Atinuke has told and written stories since she was a child. She is well known in both the UK and the USA for her two award winning and much loved children's book series Anna Hibiscus and The No.1 Car Spotter. Anna Hibiscus is one of the New York Time Out's '50 Best Children's Book Ever'. The No.1 Car Spotter is one of the '50 Best Diverse Voices' in children's books in the UK. The No.1 Car Spotter and the Car Thieves was on the Carnegie long list in 2014.

SCHOOLS PROGRAMME Pupil and adult tickets £3 each (one adult free with every 10 pupils). Friday 2nd OCTOBER

Cressida Cowell How to Train Your Dragon 2pm – 3pm Guildhall H4 Age: 7+, KS2 About the event: The Hollywood adaptations of Cressida Cowell’s How To Train Your Dragon series have been one of the biggest success stories of recent years. After two major hits, a third film is scheduled by filmmaker Dreamworks for 2018. Cressida will be in Bath talking about the explosive, exciting, (possibly) final book in her most popular book series. Come along and hear this bestselling author and illustrator in a high energy, funny event about how she comes up with new characters and plots.

About the author: Cressida Cowell grew up in London and on a small, uninhabited island off the west coast of Scotland. The name of the island is a secret, but it was such a small island it wasn’t really big enough to have a name at all. There were no roads or shops or electricity on the island, just one house and a storm-blown wilderness of sea-birds and heather. After school, Cressida obtained a BA in English Literature from Oxford University, a BA in Graphic Design from St Martin’s and an MA in Narrative Illustration from Brighton. Cressida wrote and illustrated her first picture book, Little Bo Peep’s Library Book for Hodder Children’s Books in 1998. Her first novel for eight to twelve year olds, How to Train Your Dragon, was published to popular and critical acclaim in 2003. How to Train Your Dragon has now been published in over thirty languages.

Ideas for the classrooms:

A very exciting event as there probably won’t be a pupil who hasn’t heard or seen the films. Pupils will get a chance to

find out how she creates plots and character and continue this in the classroom creating their own storyboard for the

next film.

A great introduction into this genre of writing where it is led by imagination. Pupils can create their own mythical

land/creature from using shoe boxes, clay and junk modelling. Turn your classroom into another land created by the

pupils.

A really good example of how a successful plot structure works. Pupils independently or as a whole class to create the

next conflict and problem to solve for Hiccup and Toothless.

Despite this, she gained a degree with highest honors at a leading London art college, followed by a scholarship to a theater school, and then went on to become a very successful costume designer, working on some notable productions. Sally won both the Costa Chil-dren's Book Award and the Carnegie Medal for Maggot Moon.

Sally’s talk will cover a wide range of topics; from the themes of her individual books, to dyslexia, her life story and inspirational writing workshops. Sally Gardner continues to be an avid spokesperson for Dyslexia, working to change the way it is perceived by society. She is dyslexic and argues that it’s not a disability, but a gift.

His books have sold more than two million copies worldwide and he has been published in the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, France, Germany, Sweden, Spain and Japan amongst others.

What happens in Tony’s school events: ‘I read from my books and talk about writing and stories with the aim of showing chil-dren just how great reading is. I usually bring along my notebooks and manuscripts, and I’m always happy to answer questions – and I always make sure that the children enjoy themselves.’

John Boyne

John Boyne is the author of six novels, as well as a number of short stories which have been published in various anthologies and broadcast on radio and television. His novels are published in 39 languages. The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, which to date has sold more than 4 million copies worldwide, is a #1 New York Times Bestseller and a film adaptation was released in Sep-tember 2008. Boyne resides in Dublin. He is represented by the literary agent Simon Trewin at United Agents in London, United Kingdom.

‘The pupils were excited during his visit and the buzz was great after he had talked to them. They particularly relished his advice on the creative writing process - the sixth formers asking specific questions about their own writing styles. Everybody was talking about which books of David Almond's they had read and books they were writing. Loans of his books increased and sales of his books were good! Therefore it increased the profile of books and reading and writing which was what we hoped it would achieve.’ Librarian from Chew Valley School on last years visit from David Almond
