MICHAEL CLEVELAND Major: Business Administration Minor: Finance CCU Experiences: • Internship with AXA Financial, Inc. • Studied global business dynamics in France with CCU’s MBA travel course Michael is a financial analyst for IBM Global Business Services, where he consults alongside industry experts to make customers more profitable and competitive in today’s rapidly changing business environment. His work is project-based, includes frequent travel, and has served clients in government and the banking, electronics, and oil and gas industries. For the past 14 months, he has been working on a project with an offshore bank headquartered in Bermuda. When did you begin working for IBM? I was offered the job two months after graduation. But the networking, application, and interviewing process began long before that. How did CCU prepare you for your career? CCU prepared me intellectually and as a disciple of Christ to the corporate world. I developed critical thinking skills, was trained to be an effective public speaker, and my business professors brought a wealth of real-world experience into the classroom. Every course also featured an element of ethics training. CCU is a small school, but that didn’t prevent me from getting into a Fortune 500 company. We need more Christian leaders in the corporate world, and this is a great place to start that journey. What advice would you give to a student considering this career? Commit to each of your classes and take advantage of every learning opportunity. Set high goals and don’t sell yourself short. Learn to take initiative, become a strong communicator, and adapt quickly to new and changing environments. The business consulting industry is dynamic, challenging, and fast-paced, and it’s a great career if you enjoy meeting new people and working collaboratively to solve difficult issues.
