Is a useful way for teachers and parents to communicate. Parents/guardians, please check your child’s agenda daily. Again, all students will be given an agenda in the first few weeks of school. We thank the School Council for covering the cost of all student agendas this school year. The School Council recognizes the agendas’ importance in developing students’ learning skills and as a vital communication tool for the school/parent partnership in your child’s learning.

Allergies/Medical Conditions

There are students in our school who have a life-threatening allergy to nuts and other allergens. If they smell or come into contact with these foods, they may have an anaphylactic reaction. Do not bring ANY nut or nut products to school. (Cookies, donuts, chips, Tim Bits, etc...) If your child has serious or life-threatening allergies or medical conditions that we have not been made

aware of, please contact the school immediately and speak to the school office about completing the appropriate medical forms. If your child takes any medication at school a medical form (P662-03) must be completed each year. Medication must be in its original container properly labeled and brought to the school office for safe storage. Medical forms will go home on the first day of school with students whom we have medical information on.

Safe Arrivals and Departures

If you know your child(ren) will be late or absent Parents/Guardians are responsible for: • ensuring the school has complete and current emergency contact information; • communicating with the school about any absences, lateness or change in safe departure plans for their child as soon as possible; and • making decisions about sending their child to school, using their best judgment, when buses are cancelled. The School shall: • contact parents/guardians as soon as possible when their child is identified as absent without explanation; • if all contact and emergency number have been tried and a student is still deemed to be absent without explanation, contact York Regional Police immediately; • contact parents/guardians as soon as possible if a child has missed a bus after school, has not been picked up as planned following an after school activity or event, or if the child has an unexplained absence at a planned after school activity or event; • ensure arrangements are made for students who are returned to the school by a bus driver to be picked up by a parent/guardian or designate Like you, we plan on your child arriving to and departing safely from the school. For this purpose, the Board has provided the school with three separate driveways. On the east side of the school, is a “Kiss’N Ride” loop for parents. The parking spaces in the “Kiss-n-Ride” loop are for parents, visitors and the office staff. On the east side of the school, is also the “Bus Loop” for school buses and taxies. Parents are asked not to use the designated bus loop lane for student pick-up, drop-off or for parking. The parking spaces in the parking lots are reserved for WES staff and daycare staff parking. Some students are not eligible for busing while others are, as they live within the Board mandated walking distances. We strongly encourage you to walk your child to and from school. If you must drive your child to/from school, for the safety of all, we are asking drivers to adhere to these simple rules for drop-off and pick-up:

DROP OFF: When driving your child to school, before 8:50 AM, please follow the “Kiss ’N Ride” loop, have your child ready to INDEPENDENTLY exit the car, drop your child off and proceed around the loop and back onto Beverley Glen Blvd. Students do not use the front door, but

proceed to their back of the school to their designated entry doors. Do not double park, or stop longer than necessary in the “Kiss ’N Ride” loop, as it makes it

impossible for other cars to pass by and safely drop-off passengers. At PICK UP time, the Kiss ‘N Ride loop is ONLY used for bus and taxi pick up. If you drive your

car to pick up your child from school, you will need to park your car safely on the road. Please obey the parking signs on the street and refrain from blocking the cross walk.

Do not make a three-point turn in front of school entrances, off Beverley Glen Blvd. or anywhere in the school’s “Kiss’N Ride” loop.

Information for Kindergarten Parents: Drop Off: Kindergarten parents/caregivers need to park their car on the public street and walk

their child to the kindergarten fenced play area at the back of the school. Supervision at the play area will begin at 8:40 a.m.

Pick Up: Kindergarten parents/caregivers need to pick up their child from the kindergarten fenced play area at the back of the school. Children will be released to designated adults as per the dismissal forms filled out by parents on the first day of school. (See Book of Forms)

Your cooperation is appreciated. Only together can we maintain a safe pick-up and drop-off plan for your children.

STUDENT ENTRY & EXIT IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PARENTS: At 8:50 AM, the first bell rings indicating entry. Students are to line-up as follows: Primary Classes use the south / west doors Junior Classes use the west doors Intermediate Classes use the south / east Doors (by the kindergarten play area—to go upstairs) NO LINE UP IS REQUIRED - Intermediate students are to walk-in in a safe manner Kindergarten gathers inside the kindergarten fenced play area (parents to remain outside)

At the end of the day, parents are asked to please wait outside to pick up your child/ren from their appropriate entry/dismissal door.

More information about bus routes and times can be found at www.schoolbuscity.com. Parents/guardians, it is important to remember your child’s bus number and pick-up/drop-off times. Students who use bicycles, rollerblades, skateboards or scooters to travel to school:

Behaviour/Code of Conduct

Students are expected to demonstrate behaviour that is respectful and courteous at all times. This includes demonstrating respect for each other and our communities. These expectations are indicated in our school’s Code of Conduct.

Code of Conduct Introduction A positive school climate and a safe learning and teaching environment are essential if students are to succeed in school. A positive school climate means everyone feels they are welcome and respected. All students, parents, teachers and staff have the right to be safe, and feel safe, in their school community. With this right comes the responsibility for everyone to be accountable for their actions and contribute to a positive school climate. Who is included in the code and where does it apply? The code of conduct applies not only to students, but to everyone involved in the publicly funded school system, including parents or guardians, volunteers, teachers and other staff members. The code applies whether on school property, on school buses, at school-authorized events or activities, or in other circumstances that could have an impact on the school climate. Fundamental beliefs • Everyone has a responsibility to promote a safe environment. • Everyone should be aware of their rights, as active and engaged citizens. More importantly, everyone should also accept responsibility for protecting their rights and the rights of others. Responsible citizenship involves taking part in the civic life of the school. • All members of the school community are to be treated with respect and dignity, especially those in positions of authority. • Everyone has a responsibility to resolve conflicts in a way that is civil and respectful. Insults, hurtful acts and a lack of respect for others disrupt learning and teaching in a school community. • Everyone is expected to resolve conflicts without using violence. Physical aggression is not a responsible way to deal with other people. No one should use an object to injure another person, or even threaten to use an object to injure another person. This is unacceptable and puts everyone’s safety at risk. Standards of Behaviour Respect, civility and responsible citizenship All school members must: • respect and follow all applicable laws

• demonstrate honesty and integrity • respect differences in people • treat one another with dignity and respect at all times, especially when there is disagreement • respect and treat others fairly, regardless of race, ancestry, place of origin, colour, ethnic origin, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age or ability • respect the rights of others • show care and respect for school property and the property of others • take the proper steps to help those in need • respect all members of the school community • respect the need of others to work in an environment that encourages learning and teaching • seek help from school staff, if necessary, to resolve conflict peacefully • not swear at a teacher, student or parent Safety School community members must not: • engage in any form of bullying, whether it is in person or through technology, like email, cell phones, or any other form of social media • commit sexual assault • traffic weapons or illegal drugs • commit robbery • give alcohol to anyone under the legal drinking age • be in possession of a weapon, including firearms • use any object to threaten or intimidate another person • injure anyone with an object • be in possession or under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs, or give them to anyone else • inflict or encourage others to inflict bodily harm • engage in hate propaganda or other types of behaviour caused by hate or bias • commit an act of vandalism that causes damage to school property at the student’s school or to property on the school premises. Students are to be treated with respect and dignity. In return, they must demonstrate respect for themselves, for others and for the responsibilities of citizenship through acceptable behaviour. Respect and responsibility are demonstrated when a student: • comes to school prepared, on time and ready to learn • shows respect for himself/herself, for others and for those in authority • refrains from bringing anything to school that may put the safety of others at risk • follows the established rules and takes responsibility for his/her own actions. Parents play an important role in the education of their children and can support the efforts of school staff in maintaining a safe and respectful learning environment for all students. Parents fulfill this responsibility when they: • show an active interest in their child’s school work and progress

• communicate regularly with the school • make sure their child is neat, properly dressed and prepared for school • ensure that their child attends school regularly and on time • inform the school promptly about their child’s absence or late arrival • become familiar with the provincial code of conduct, the board’s code of conduct and school rules • encourage and help their child follow the rules of behaviour • help school staff deal with disciplinary issues involving their child. Community partners and the police Community agencies are resources that school boards can use to deliver prevention or intervention programs. The police play an essential role in making our schools and communities safer. Police investigate incidents in accordance with the protocol developed with the local school board. These protocols are based on a provincial model developed by the now Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services and the Ministry of Education. Visit www.edu.gov.on.ca/parents/safeschools.html to learn more about Ontario’s new approach to making schools safer. This document is derived largely from Policy/Program Memorandum Number 128: The Provincial Code of Conduct and School Board Codes of Conduct, available on the Ministry's web site.

Class Placements

Due to late registrations and enrolments, there may be staffing changes and class reorganization during the first few weeks of school. We do our best to keep these changes to a minimum and to support students during any necessary transitions. Student will find out their placement on September 5, 2017, but if reorganization is required appropriate communication will be sent to your attention from the school.

Communication Home

Parents/guardians are our most important partners in educating children. We communicate with you in a variety of ways throughout the year.

Agenda

The Student Agenda (Grades 1-5 only!) serves as a useful way for teachers and parents/guardians to communicate. Parents/guardians, please check your child’s agenda daily.

Email

To improve communication between home and school and reduce paper use, we coordinate an email distribution list. The list will be maintained and used only by school staff to communicate electronically to parents/guardians. Your email will not be sold, distributed or publicly posted. If we don’t already

Dress Code

Appropriate Dress defines a standard of dress that meets the school community’s expectations of modesty and decency and promotes a safe and respectful learning environment. Compliance to the Appropriate Dress Policy is of a mandatory nature (Extract from Procedure P635.0) A reasonable standard of dress and language which identifies school as a place of dignity and learning is required at all times. Wearing of clothes which contain “put downs”, offensive symbols and inappropriate messages displayed or implied are deemed unacceptable for a school setting. The manner of dress and language should be appropriate for a formal school setting. If a student’s clothing is deemed inappropriate, he/she will be asked to change. Bare midriff, tank tops or tops with thin bra-like straps (underwear must be covered) are not permitted in grades K-8. Parents/Guardians may be notified to either pick up their child or bring in a change of clothing. As a sign of respect, please be advised that all head gear (except for religious purposes) is to be removed before entering the school building.

Electronic Devices

Cell phones and other personal communication devices must be turned off and kept out of sight during all instructional periods, except with the clear permission of the classroom teacher. The school is not responsible for personal items that go missing at the school. Students will not be permitted to accept phone calls or text during the instructional day. In the case of an emergency, please contact the school office.

Emergency Information

Let office staff know as soon as possible if any of the following information changes:

address, work or home numbers or other contact information

emergency contacts and telephone numbers

changes in custody agreements

medical alert or changes in health condition (e.g. allergies, medications)

Emergency Preparedness

The Board has a number of policies and procedures in place to address emergency situations when normal school operations cannot continue or where student and staff member safety may be at risk. This could include a fire, flood or acts of violence. All schools have individual plans and conduct drills throughout the year. There will be six fire, two lockdown and one hold and secure drill annually so students become familiar with emergency preparedness procedures. These drills are important so that in the case of an actual emergency, students and staff members know what to do to be safe.

In a hold and secure situation, York Regional Police will ask that outside doors of a school remain locked. Normal school operations will continue inside the building, but no one may enter or leave the building until police indicate it is safe to do so. This will occur regardless of weather.

Excursions

Teachers may take classes on walks around the community to support classroom programs. As well, many physical education classes and other activities are held outdoors, weather permitting. You will be informed whenever school vehicles are used for longer trips.

Extended Absences Parents must provide the school with a written notice if they are planning to remove students from school for vacation or religious holidays for more than three consecutive days. Parents may choose to complete the school created form available in the office.

Homework

Homework is an integral component in the education of our students. Homework provides the opportunity for students to review upon the concepts and skills taught during the school day. It encourages students to develop responsibility, self-discipline, time management skills and a positive attitude towards independent study. Time spent on homework should be measured by the quality of concentrated effort and not necessarily the amount of time on a task. It should not become frustrating or a nightly battle. A positive tone must be set at home with parents and their children working together. Our young people need the support and guidance parents can provide while working with their children. We believe that the responsibility for the completion of homework is shared amongst three partners:

The Student The Parent The Teacher

Please speak with your child’s homeroom teacher if you have any questions or concerns regarding

homework. For more information about time guidelines and how parents can provide support, please see the Guide to the School year and Board Policy and Procedure #320.0, Homework

Lockers

Lockers are school property and will be assigned only to grade 7 and 8 students by the homeroom teacher. Students may be requested to share lockers. Students should not store valuables in lockers. Students may only access their lockers at designated entrance and dismissal times or with special permission of a staff member. Lockers may be opened with the administrator’s permission and/or the York Regional Police. Locks will be provided and managed by the school at no cost to parents unless damaged or lost due to neglect.

Lunch Time Agreement

Your child's safety is important to us. While we all want to foster independence especially within our older junior and intermediate students, lunch time is still considered to be official “school time” and students are officially in the school’s care for that period of time. As such, we will continue to provide you with the option of either having your child go home DAILY for lunch where you take over supervision duties, OR having your child stay at school DAILY for lunch. Please note that a student going home to an unsupervised location during the lunch period creates a number of safety concerns. Complete the enclosed Lunch Time Agreement to indicate your preference and return it by September 11, 2017. Only when necessary, if you are dropping off a lunch for your child, we have a drop off table just outside the office. Labels are provided to clearly identify your child’s lunch. Wilshire E.S. Classroom Lunch Rules:

1. Respect lunch monitors, each other and your classroom. 2. Remain in your OWN seat while eating (NO sharing food!). 3. No technology or personal devices (iPods, phones, computers...) at lunch. 4. Recycle and dispose of garbage appropriately. 5. Work on a quiet activity at your desk after eating. 6. You must have permission to leave the room.

Parent support is greatly appreciated to ensure we have a safe and comfortable environment for all students to enjoy lunch.

Personal Information

Your child’s personal information is protected under the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection Act (MFIPPA). Whenever personal information is collected, its use will be explained to you. Please see the list below for examples of when your permission will be sought.

Physical Education Clothing

Students participate in Physical Education as part of the Ontario Curriculum. They are expected to change into shorts or track pants, a T-shirt and non-marking sole running shoes. We suggest that one pair of running shoes be left at school as “inside shoes” or “gym shoes”.

Requests for Religious Accommodation

There may be circumstances where students and families request accommodation for religious beliefs in curriculum areas including the Arts and Physical Education. Accommodations may include different instruction and assessment opportunities, or full withdrawal. If you are interested in discussing an accommodation based upon your religious beliefs, speak with your child’s teacher and the school principal or complete the Faith Requests for Curriculum Accommodations Form available in this booklet or through the school.

By providing a range of accommodations, we are building a sense of community and belonging for all students.

For more information, see Board Procedure #261.8, Equity and Inclusivity: Religious Accommodation.

School Council

As parents/guardians, there are many ways you can be engaged in your child’s learning at home and at school. This includes getting involved with the School Council. Wilshire E.S. 2017-18 School Assistants Application Form

School assistants (formerly lay assistants) play a critical and significant role as members of the school team. The period of time when school assistants are utilized is often the busiest time of a school day. Therefore, school assistants must recognize that not only is their role a demanding one, but the responsibilities of the job require them to be as competent and professional as possible.

The role of the school assistant is to provide supervisory support to teaching staff during peak or critical periods of the school day.

There are four main responsibilities for each school assistant. It is the expectation of the Board and the school that these duties be performed consistently, conscientiously and professionally, to ensure the utmost safety for the students. Supervision duties may include:

Noon hour supervision during lunch hour;

Supervision of children during bus loading and unloading;

Yard duty supervision;

Supervision of noon hour activities.
