PYP- PRIMARY YEARS PROGRAMME- WHAT DO WE WANT THE STUDENTS TO BE ABLE TO DO? In order for our Primary Years Programme students to be able to go through the process of purposeful learning with asking questions and seeking answers to their questions, they need to master a whole range of skills. The IB PYP calls these skills transdisciplinary skills. They are seen and used in all subject areas. Your child is challenged every day to acquire to grow in the use of social, research, thinking, communication, and self- management skills. The Victorian Curriculum has introduced the teaching of Capabilities; Critical and Creative thinking, ethical, intercultural and personal and social capabilities. These match the transdisciplinary skills we have been teaching through the units of inquiries and are not isolated in any particular area, but intertwined throughout the curriculum. This allows your child many opportunities to master these skills beyond the basics. We want our students to be able to understand and draw on these skills in order to be well prepared for further education and for life beyond school.

COMPASS SCHOOL MANAGER

Compass School Manager provides access to school news, events, upcoming class assignments, academic results and more. This application is designed for staff, students and parents. You should receive an individually assigned username and password for login into Compass this week. Please check your child’s bag for the envelope and inform the office should you not receive this. NUT ALLERGIES This is a reminder to our community that we have a very small number of children at our school, who suffer from allergies. To support these children we ask that you keep nut based products for weekend snacks. This will put parents and children at ease knowing that our school community is showing consideration by reducing risks of cross-contamination for these children. We do not support children sharing food from their lunchboxes and carefully monitor class celebrations and food used for cooking experiences. PARKING YOUR CAR IN AND AROUND GLENROY WEST PRIMARY SCHOOL It is everyone’s responsibility to keep our children safe. It is encouraging to hear parents are taking more care and not parking over the school crossing or over driveways. Please ensure you abide by the 40km speed limit around the school. We must all work together, be tolerant and obey the road rules. Thank you VISITORS AND TOILETS We kindly ask parents and visitors to use the adult toilets located in the main building when necessary. Thank you. LANGUAGES OPEN THE DOOR TO A BIGGER WORLD-WHY LEARN A SECOND LANGUAGE? Parents, Why would you encourage your children to learn another language? This is one important reason: “Language skills and cultural sensitivity will be the currency of this new world order”-General Peter Cosgrove, speaking to a conference with languages learning in Australian schools 30 May 2002. The obvious reason is to enable more effective communication with the non-English speaking people of the world. Learning another language is about recognising one of the realities of life-94% of the world’s population currently speak a language other than English. The world is a language rich place. In learning a new language, students can learn things that they can learn in no other way. An important part of being a responsible world citizen is to be able to manage sensitive, effective communication and the transfer of knowledge across languages and cultures. Through learning languages students can understand and value their own culture and the cultures of other people, so that they can view the world from a wider perspective.

SECOND LANGUAGE LEARNING CAN BE AN IMPORTANT AID TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF LITERACYAND GENERIC COGNITIVE AND LIFE SKILLS It is often forgotten that learning a second language develops literacy skills. There is considerable evidence to suggest that learning another language can enhance literacy in a student’s first language. By comparing features of their first language with those of another language, learners are better able to understand the structure and workings of English. For example, second language learners develop and enhance their skills and strategies for making meaning from words. This transfers to English. A second language can also provide a new beginning and success at school for learners who have struggled with English. This is good for the motivation and engagement of learners. Students can apply the generic skills that they learn through the study of languages to all subject areas. These skills include critical thinking, reasoning, conceptualizing and problem solving. At the core of Languages learning is the development of communication skills, both written and oral. The development of all these skills prepares students for success in all subject areas and later life. Second language proficiency opens career opportunities for students that otherwise wouldn’t exist. In response to a rapidly changing global marketplace, all economically developed countries now recognise the importance of a highly skilled workforce. Students with good language skills enhance their career prospects and opportunities in fields such as aid agency work, business services, engineering , finance services, govt. and public administration, health, marketing, media, journalism, technology and tourism. Stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks. ENROLMENT PLACES FOR 2018 The demand for places at Glenroy West Primary School and kindergarten is high. A phone call or an email to the school email, [email protected] . It is very important that children attend school daily except if they are unwell or in extreme circumstances. We know that every day at school counts! There are a few bugs around again and as winter approaches we can expect more. Our

At Glenroy West Primary School we are committed to providing your child with an excellent education. The building blocks of an excellent education begins with all students coming to school each and every day. Regular school attendance is vital and missing school days can have a big impact on a child’s future. Missing one day a fortnight will equate to missing four full weeks by the end of the year. Each day a student misses school puts them behind and can affect their educational outcomes. Some of the reasons for student absence at GWPS

Staying home to celebrate a birthday

Going shopping

Looking after a sibling

Spending time with a relative

Extended weekends

Overseas travel

Dental and medical appointment

Illness

Kind regards, Have a wonderful week, Pamela Streete Principal.

WE WANT OUR STUDENTS TO TELL US WHAT THEY THINK

We value student voice as a means to improving student engagement, wellbeing and quality instruction and are conducting a survey to find out what your child thinks of our school. The Attitudes to School survey is an annual student survey offered by the Department of Education and Training to assist schools in gaining an understanding of students' perceptions and experience of school. Our school will use the survey results to plan programs and activities to improve your child's schooling experience. The Department has updated the survey for 2017 to include important new measures that are known to influence student engagement and performance. Students from Year 4 to Year 6 at our school will participate in the survey. Your child will complete the survey online during school hours using a purpose built secure online survey tool. It is important to note that we are not in any way “testing” your child. Your child has the right to refuse or withdraw from the survey at any point before, during, or after completion of the survey. Your child will be provided with a unique login to complete the survey. The student login is an assigned identifier that may be used by the Department to combine data for research purposes only. Your child’s privacy and the confidentiality of your child’s survey responses will be protected at all times. No identifiable personal data is included in the survey response file.

The survey results will be reported back to the school in Term 3. No student can be identified in the results reported to schools or in any other report of the data. School may inform that the survey results will be communicated to parents through annual reporting or by some other means.

This year the Attitudes to School survey will be conducted at our school over the period Monday 22 May to Friday 23 June. The survey only takes 20-30 minutes to complete and occurs during your child's class time. Please speak to your child’s teacher if you would like more information or visit the Department of Education and Training website:

http://www.education.vic.gov.au/school/principals/management/Pages/performsurveyat.aspx.
