Welcome Welcome to Goldsmith Primary Academy. We are a happy and friendly school, and pride ourselves on being

PE Uniform

Our school uniform includes clothing required for physical education. We have adopted a comfortable PE uniform which should enhance the children’s participation and enjoyment of sport and physical activity. Our PE uniform is the same for both boys and girls:

T-shirt – plain white or yellow

Shorts – plain white or black

Tracksuit – plain dark tracksuit/jogging bottoms/sweatshirt for outdoor activities

Footwear – pumps/trainers (for PE only)

Swimming – short trunks (boys)/one piece swimming costume (girls) and swimming cap

Children will be expected to change for PE activities and must wear pumps for indoor PE in the hall. If children do not have a PE kit in school they will not be allowed to participate directly in the lesson, but will be involved in other ways.

Jewellery

Wearing of jewellery is discouraged. One pair of small, plain, stud type earrings in the ear

lobe and a small, simple wristwatch may be worn.

School Dinners and Healthy Eating Goldsmith Primary Academy is a school that promotes healthy eating. With this in mind, we do not allow the following at school for snacks or drinks at school.

High sugar energy drinks

Children will be discouraged from eating or drinking items that we feel are unhealthy and will

be asked to take these items home at the end of the day.

If your child brings a packed lunch, here are some suggestions:

Sandwich with protein filling (e.g. cheese, ham or chicken)

Yoghurt or fromage frais

Low fat cheese spread on crackers

Fruit (e.g. apple, banana, easy peel satsuma or raisins)

School Catering Service …. Relish

We hope that you will be comforted to know that our school cares so much about the food that we offer that we manage the catering service ourselves with the support and advice of Relish. Every term we introduce new menus that have been nutritionally analysed and comply with the latest legislation. We are really proud of our menu offer and there are always masses of fresh food and choice available. Weekly menus include the following: • Meat or fish option • Vegetarian option • Potato, rice or noodles • Vegetables or salad • Wholemeal bread and Salad Bar • Dessert or fresh fruit and yoghurt Vegetarian options are available every day, as well as filled jacket potatoes. Fresh drinking water is always available. Our menus are seasonal and use seasonal produce. More than 85% of our dishes are freshly prepared and we actively encourage local food networks and use farm assured meat. Creative Curriculum

At Goldsmith Primary Academy our curriculum is planned to ensure that every child has the opportunity to develop:

The school year provides 36 weeks of curriculum which includes 5 training days, 2 days non-curriculum at Christmas and an additional 2 weeks of themed curriculum weeks for example, enterprise, art, science, technology, cultural awareness week and outdoor learning week. In Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 the school week provides 5 hours per day of teaching time which is 25 hours per week and 900 hours per year. In Key Stage 2 the school week provides 5 hours and 10 minutes per day of teaching time which is 25 hours 50 minutes per week and 930 hours per year. The creative curriculum is taught and timetabled based on teachers own discretion. Teachers use the curriculum non-negotiable timings (see below) to plan their weekly timetables (see timetable format). Each term a new topic is chosen to support teaching the key skills in all subject areas. Alongside this an outdoor project is decided so that children can actively be involved in developing the outdoor area. Creative Curriculum … continued The following are the minimum requirements for teaching over the 36 weeks: Maths: 180hrs per year – equivalent to 5hrs per week English: KS1: 288hrs per year – equivalent to 8hrs per week

KS2: 324hrs per year - equivalent to 9hrs per week This must include 30mins reading/30mins phonics, spelling, handwriting timetabled daily.

PE: 72hrs per year - equivalent to 2hrs per week, this must be timetables weekly. ICT: 90hrs per year – equivalent to 2hrs 30mins per week, 30mins to be skills

based teaching Science: 54hrs per year – equivalent to 1.5hrs per week RE: 27hrs per year - equivalent to 45mins per week MFL: 18hrs per year - equivalent to 30mins per week This leaves for Creative Curriculum: KS1: 900hrs – 729hrs = 171hrs teaching time equivalent to 4hrs 45mins per week KS2: 930hrs – 765hrs = 165hrs teaching time equivalent to 4hrs 40mins per week Assessment

The school has policies for Assessment and Marking. Teachers keep a class levelled key skills curriculum assessment record. This is completed every half term and progress monitored. In addition to this, English and Maths Non-negotiable learning standards are used. Moderation

The Curriculum Leader takes overall responsibility for the curriculum. Subject Leaders in the

core subjects [Literacy, Mathematics, Science and ICT] monitor their particular subject to

ensure that it is implemented consistently and effectively in line with the agreed policies.

Consultation relating to the curriculum is facilitated through the annual stakeholder

consultation process, from parents through newsletters, from pupils through the class and

school councils, and from staff and governors at their regular meetings.



Our School and Facilities

Nursery and Early Years Foundation Stage

Our Early Years Curriculum is theme based and cross referenced to the Early Years

Foundation Stage, this is a statutory requirement for all children in Nursery and Reception.

This is a curriculum which encourages children explore and learn through purposeful play

based activities. We continually assess the children so that we can plan for their next step

along in their learning journey. There is a careful balance between activities that are chosen

by the adults and opportunities for child initiated learning within in a structured environment.

Our environments are set up to enable children to move freely around the clearly defined

areas. This includes both the indoors and outdoors. Your child will be learning skills and

acquiring new knowledge through 7 areas of learning. These consist of the 3 prime areas of

Communication and Language, Personal, Social & Emotional development and Physical

development. The prime areas are the essential building blocks for your child’s future

learning. As children develop the 3 prime areas will help them to develop in the 4 specific

areas of Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World and Expressive Arts & Design.

Swimming Pool

We are lucky enough to be one of the only Primary Schools within the

Borough with a swimming pool and have a number of qualified swimming

instructors and life guards employed to allow us to use this facility within

our weekly PE timetable for children from Nursery age through to Year 6.

Swimming has many health benefits and allows children to exercise many

muscle groups without causing stress on their joints. Swimming also aids

in the improvement of speech, brain development and works multiple

areas of the brain through combined movement such as the kicking of

arms and legs together. Swimming also reduces stress, increases mood-boosting

chemicals in the brain and allows for muscles to contract and relax which increases blood

flow to the brain providing nourishment.



Our School and Facilities … continued

Forest Schools

Forest School is a unique educational experience and process that offers children the

opportunity to succeed and develop confidence and self-esteem through hands-on learning

experiences in a woodland environment. We have an established forest area that is used

by groups of children from Key Stage 1 and 2 on a weekly basis. These groups are led by 2

members of staff who hold a Level 3 Forest School Leader Qualification, supported by a

qualified Level 2 assistant. Children engage in motivating, achievable tasks and activities in

almost all weathers. They work with tools, play, learn boundaries of behaviour, grow in

confidence, and develop self-esteem whilst developing an understanding of the natural

world.

ICT Our school ICT technicians are children across Key Stage 2 who are trained to use ICT equipment safely and effectively to support their learning across the curriculum. Training for our technicians includes learning how to stay safe on the internet, how to get the most out of ICT software and features and how to fix minor problems with any broken equipment. As

part of their training, our technicians also train peers to become successful ICT mentors, who provide ICT support and training for children and staff across the whole of our school. Library

We have 16 librarians, along with our Mrs Thomas, who worked hard and successfully run

the library. The pupil librarians were chosen after an advertisement for the vacancy was

displayed and interviews had taken place. The librarians issue and receive books and

return the books in dewey number order. They have knowledge of where up to 7,000 books

are located within the library. The librarians are timetabled for different classes from

Reception up to Year 6 and every class has a day in which they can attend to enjoy our

library.



Goldsmith in the Community

Our Local Community Our school is at the centre of our community. Many local businesses and people give us their support and are always very generous when we fundraise for school equipment. People in the community, including local fire crew, the Mayor and MPs visit us and tell us about what they do. We work hard to raise funds for local and national causes such as Ramp up the Red and Jeans for Genes Day…we often enjoy dressing up day and themed events to show our support. We also visit people outside and take part in community activities such as carol singing at our local old people’s home /

hospice and supporting harvest festival by sharing our donations with local elderly residents.

Our School Community

We are a friendly school who like to work together. Even our parents and carers make friends with each other when they come to collect our children at the end of the school day. Our Parent’s Association and Governors are very busy and include mums, dads, grandparents and other local people who care about our school.

Our Global Community

We have strong links with local Councillors and with their help have set up global pen pals with a school in Pakistan. We donated uniforms to Harden JMI Gurjurat in Pakistan and have since sent letters describing school life in England. We hope to continue these links going forward.

Acceptable Use Policy

For Internet and Email Use

If I’m unsure about anything on the screen, I will click on the dolphin or turn off the screen.

I will then ask the teacher for assistance.

I shall ask an adult if I am about to use the computer or internet.

I shall only touch my own computer or work.

I shall only put general items on the computer, no personal details.

I shall not share public chat rooms.

I shall only use websites that I have been advised to use.

If any pictures or words come onto the screen that make me feel uncomfortable,

I shall turn off the screen and then tell a teacher.

If I put a picture in my work or use other people’s words I will say where they came from or

who they belong to.



Policies Attendance Parents have a legal duty to ensure that their child attends school. The attendance target for every child is 100%. Any absence can seriously disrupt a child’s learning. Absence If you child is unwell, please call the school before 9:15am with a reason for your child’s absence. Please also send you child into school with a note on their return. For safety reasons, the school operates a first day call policy – if we do not receive a message from you then we will call home to find out why you child is absent. Serious cases of non-attendance will be referred to the Education Welfare Officer. Lateness All children should be in school for registration. Children who arrive late must be taken to the main School Office. The time and reason for lateness will be recorded. Where persistent lateness gives cause for concern, parents/carers will be expected to attend a meeting in school. When lateness becomes a persistent problem, a referral will be made to the Education Welfare Officer. Leave During Term Time School does not authorise holiday in term time. This is in line with all other Primary and Secondary schools in Walsall. Medical Appointments No child is allowed home unaccompanied during the day. When a child has to be collected for attendance at the hospital/clinic/dentist, etc, the child should be picked up and returned to the School Office. Where possible, please bring medical appointment cards or letters. Medication The school policy is that members of staff will not give medicines unless it is required four times a day. In these circumstances, a consent form must be completed at the School Office prior to administering the medication. Alternatively, parents/carers are welcome to come into school to administer the correct dosage themselves. If a pupil is too unwell to be in school, then the school has the right to send the pupil home and parents/carers will be called to collect their child. Only in the case of a child being on ongoing long-term medication then, provided the school have a doctor’s authorisation, medication will be administered through school. First Aid We treat minor cuts, bruises and bumps with cold water or an antiseptic wipe. The injury is entered in an accident book. In the case of anything more serious, we would contact the child’s parent. We have several members of staff who are qualified in first aid. These staff would treat or assess minor injuries in the first instance. In the case of a serious injury or illness, we would always contact the parent/carer. In the case of parents/carers being unable to be contacted, in a real emergency, the school would phone for an ambulance or a member of staff would take the child to hospital.



Safeguarding At this school, the health, safety and well-being of every child is out concern. We listen to our pupils and take what they tell us seriously. There are occasions when our concern about a child may mean that we have to consult other agencies even before we contact you. The procedures which we follow have been laid down by the Walsall Safeguarding Children Board.

SEN / Equal Opportunities We ensure equality of opportunity for all pupils including those who are identified as having Special Educational Needs. The school follows the National Code of Practice for SEN pupils. Children are supported at all levels using a graduated response starting with Quality First Teaching. Through this approach we may use external support agencies to help assess children when we identify particular needs may need to be met by specialise support. Parents/carers are kept fully informed and are consulted throughout the process. A copy of the schools SEN policy is available upon request. Behaviour We believe children learn and succeed in a secure and happy environment. We expect that staff will:
