and community centre staff prepare the food and supervise the children with help from our grade 7 students. HAWK WEAR CLOTHING A reminder that orders & payment are due on September 25th at the school office. EPI-PENS & ADMINISTRATION OF MEDICATION FORMS

For the health and safety of your child, if your child had an Epi-pen held in the school office last year or

requires an Epi-pen, please bring the Epi-pen to the school office as soon as possible and ensure the Epi-pen does not expire during the school year. We also have a form in the office that needs to be completed “Request for Administration of Medication at School” and requires a pharmacy label. Last year, School District 38 (Richmond), in collaboration with Vancouver Coastal Health – Richmond, revised the school districts guidelines regarding the administration of prescribed medication. In accordance to these guidelines, non-prescription medications such as Tylenol, Advil, Benadryl, etc. will not be administered by Richmond School District staff, and will not be kept at school. In the past, students who required medications to be administered by school staff needed a form to be completed by the family doctor. To simplify the process, we now use the form “Request for Administration of Medication at School” which will require the medication’s pharmacy label to replace the family doctor’s written order and signature. A BIG THANK YOU to everyone for all the donations made to the

Terry Fox Foundation. Our school raised $437.15! SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY AND SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING AT HAMILTON We recognize that Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is the foundation for any academic learning at the school. If children do not feel safe or cannot manage their emotions, they cannot learn to their full potential. At Hamilton we support students in SEL through our Positive Behaviour Support Program. The program is based on teaching and working with our students. We start by making sure everyone is aware of the school matrix and classroom teachers have been reviewing it. During the first week of school all the grade 1-7 students rotated through a series of activities which focused on behavioural expectations, the “traffic light” and problem solving strategies. Below are the District and School Codes of Conduct and at the end of this newsletter is the school Matrix for your information. Please review the Codes of Conduct with your children and show how they connect to your families’ expectations. DISTRICT POLICIES AND REGULATIONS DISTRICT CODE OF CONDUCT Policy 502.1.1

District Code of Conduct The Board of Education recognizes

its obligation to all members of the school community to provide a positive climate and a safe, healthy environment such that effective, purposeful teaching and learning may take place.

Page 3: SCHOOL NEWS #2hamilton.sd38.bc.ca/sites/hamilton.sd38.bc.ca/files... · SCHOOL CASH ONLINE As was previously communicated on a two-page yellow form, all Hamilton parents are encouraged

To that end it is expected that all members of the school community will conduct themselves in an ethical and lawful manner that demonstrates respect for self, others, property and the environment. A violation may warrant intervention or disciplinary action. It is expected that all members of the school community (staff, students, parents, and guests) will:

• respect the rights of others; • respect the health and safety of others; • respect the property of others - private

and public; • respect the legitimate authority of the

school administrative officers and staff; • respect and take pride in the schools'

physical facilities; • respect the diversity of the school

community; • respect the non-smoking nature of

district schools and property; • respect the individual rules within each

school; • behave in an ethical and lawful manner; • behave in a considerate and courteous

manner; • behave in a safe and responsible manner

at all times; • comply with the purpose and spirit of

the BC Human Rights Code, including not engaging in discriminatory conduct on the basis of gender, race, colour, ancestry, place of origin, religion, marital status, family status, physical or mental disability, or sexual orientation;

• not threaten, harass, intimidate, bully or assault, in any way, any person within the school community directly or indirectly, through print or electronic media; and

• not be in possession of weapons, dangerous articles, alcohol, or illegal drugs while in school or at school functions.

The District Code of Conduct shall apply in school and at school functions. Board Adoption: 05 September 1995 Board Adoption of Revision: 15 September 2008 Policy 502.1.1-R HAMILTON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL GUIDELINES AND POLICIES

Star Student Code of Conduct We try to keep our rules to a

minimum, and to stress positive behaviour rather than having a long list of things students are forbidden to do. Also, the goal of all of our discipline practices is to change behaviour for the better, rather than to

just provide consequences for unacceptable behaviour. We also recognize the developmental nature of student learning, and that students at different grades and times in their lives will require different forms of redirection and guidance. It is important for the adults in their lives to use careful judgement in helping students learn about their rights and responsibilities. I have a RIGHT to learn. It is my RESPONSIBILITY to listen to instructions, work quietly at my desk, raise my hand if I have a question, concern, or need to leave, and to complete assignments. I have a RIGHT to hear and be heard. It is my RESPONSIBILITY to listen when others are speaking. I have a RIGHT to be respected. It is my RESPONSIBILITY not to tease or bother people or to hurt their feelings. I have a RIGHT to be safe. It is my RESPONSIBILITY not to threaten or physically harm anyone else. I have a RIGHT to privacy and to my own personal space privacy. It is my RESPONSIBILITY to respect the personal property of others, and to accept their right to privacy. The Code of conduct is to be reviewed annually with students, staff and school community. Ref: RSB Policy: 502.1.1-R HAMILTON EARLY WARNING NUMBER 604-668-6516
