Dear Parents/carers, Ride/ Walk To school day Congratulations to all the students and Miss Marr for riding or walking to school last Friday. It was wonderful to see the many bikes, scooters and many families walking together to school. A lovely photo attached. Thank you to Miss Marr and all staff for promoting the healthy aspects of exercise and school safety.

EVERY DAY COUNTS At Glenroy West Primary School we are committed to providing your child with an excellent education. The building blocks of an excellent education begins with all students coming to school each and every day. Regular school attendance is vital and missing school days can have a big impact on a child’s future. Missing one day a fortnight will equate to missing four full weeks by the end of the year. Each day a student misses school puts them behind and can affect their educational outcomes.

Some of the reasons for student absence at Glenroy West Primary School:

Staying home to celebrate a birthday

Going shopping

Looking after a sibling

Spending time with a relative

Extended weekends

Overseas travel

Dental and medical appointments

Illness

If for any reason your child must be absent from school, parents or guardians are required to provide written notification, stating the reason for their child’s absence. This information will be retained by the teacher and archived by the school. This is a DET requirement. Please be aware from March 1st 2014, new federal government laws will mean that parents can be fined for not sending students to school without an acceptable reason. If you are having attendance issues with your child, please inform your child’s teacher so we can work together to get your child to school every day. For your interest I have included an article by Michael Grose. Remember, every day counts! A REMINDER A reminder to all students and families that the school grounds are not supervised until 8.30am in the morning. Students at school before 8.30am will be directed to Before School Care. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. Monday 14th March is a Labour Day Holiday. No students are required at school on this day. School Contributions Information has been distributed to all families in relation to school contributions and fees for 2016 A big ‘thank you’ to all families who have made payment to date. These contributions allow us to provide the best resources for your children. Payments can be made at the office by cash, cheque or credit card. The essential Education levies cover all books and classroom materials for all programmes, inclusive of Internet access at both home and school for Mathletics, Spellodrome and Reading Eggs and the list goes on. I appreciate the community’s support with the payment of these levies promptly. Could I encourage parents to finalise fees before the end of term. We are currently reviewing budgets for 2016. For parents who require support please speak to Eva or Anita in the office for a payment plan. PYP Update The teachers and students have developed an essential agreement together to form the common understandings about what makes an effective class learning environment and are our rights and responsibilities as members of Glenroy West Primary School. By reviewing and discussing the Learner Profile at the start of the year, the students become more familiar with the attributes and how they are applied in their learning and everyday life. Maybe you ask your child about their strongest attribute of the Learner Profile. Do they see themselves as courageous, an inquirer, knowledgeable, a thinker, a communicator, principled, open minded, caring, balanced or reflective?

What is the PYP (PRIMARY YEARS PROGRAMME)? The International Baccalaureate IB- Primary Years programme is for students aged 3-12yrs. The PYP prepares students to become active, caring lifelong learners who demonstrate respect for themselves and others and have the capacity to participate in the world around them. It focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer both within and beyond the classroom. The PYP presents schools with a complete plan for high quality, international education. It provides schools with a curriculum framework of essential elements such as knowledge, concepts, skills, attitudes and action that young students need to equip themselves for successful lives, both now and in the future. Schools work with the five elements to construct a rigorous and challenging primary curriculum for international education. The curriculum is transdisciplinary, meaning that it focusses on issues that go across subject areas. The PYP is organised to include

1. The written curriculum, which explains what students will learn.

2. The taught curriculum, which sets out how educators teach the PYP

3. The assessed curriculum, which details the principles and practice of effective assessment in the PYP.

School Council 2017 The next School Council AGM meeting is Monday March 21st at 6pm. School Parents Members We do require two parent members for School Council 2016. Please let me know if you are interested in attending School Council meetings this year. A reminder that any member of the school community can attend school council meetings as an observer, and I would encourage you to take up this opportunity if you would like to find out more about what happens within the school council. Important Reminder- Administration Carpark in York Street For staff parking only NOT parents for the safety of all concerned. Traffic Safety Officers will be in attendance around the school in coming days. Only parents with a sticker for wheelchair access may park in the defined car spaces. Thank you for your cooperation & understanding in this safety matter. OSCH PROGRAM- BEFORE & AFTER SCHOOL CARE Please phone OSCH Coordinator Sam Kale for any bookings on Mobile- 0423 258 218 or phone the school office on 9306-8955. You may also continue to contact the office for bookings on 9306-8955. Please ensure there is another person allocated as a contact (with mobile number) if you are unable to collect your child from the OSHC program please. School Uniform The School Council would like to remind parents that we follow our Glenroy West primary School Uniform policy. It is compulsory for all students. If your child is not able to be in correct uniform please provide a note to the classroom teacher. CANTEEN NEWS From Term 2, the Canteen will be opening an additional day for lunch orders. The Canteen days are Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The canteen will also be open at both break times for icy poles and snacks. Thank you to the Parent Volunteers. EASTER EGG RAFFLE Parent Group Easter Egg Raffle Dear Parents/carers, Our Easter Basket is located at the office and we are seeking donations of Easter eggs. Raffle tickets have been sent home for our annual Easter egg raffle which will be drawn on the last day of term. We appreciate your kind donations. Thank you.
