The Gilman Program strongly encourages applications from: Students attending community colleges Students from diverse ethnic backgrounds Students going to non-traditional countries Students participating in credit-bearing internships Students with disabilities First-generation college students Students participating in fields of study underrepresented in education abroad Critical Need Language Award Students studying a critical need language are automatically considered for the Gilman Critical Need Language Award (CNLA) for a total possible award of $8,000. CNLAs are awarded to students studying a Critical Need Language in a country in which that language is predominantly spoken. A limited number are available each year. Critical Need Languages include: The Gilman Program diversifies the kinds of students who study and intern abroad and the countries and regions where they go by awarding over 2,000 scholarships of up to $5,000. Eligibility Requirements Applicant must be a U.S. citizen undergraduate student at a 2 or 4 year institution in the United States Applicant must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application or during the term abroad Applicant must be applying to a study abroad program or internship eligible for credit at the student’s institution of higher education in the United States Applicant must be studying or interning abroad for a minimum of 4 weeks (28 days) in one country Study abroad program or internship can take place in any country outside of the U.S. that is not on the U.S. Department of State’s Travel Warning list or Cuba Chinese languages Bahasa Indonesia Indic languages Persian languages Turkic languages Arabic Japanese Korean Russian Swahili APPLICATIONS For Spring Programs and Internships FIRST TUESDAY OF OCTOBER For Summer, Fall & Academic Year Programs and Internships FIRST TUESDAY OF MARCH SCHOLARSHIPS TO STUDY & INTERN ABROAD
