“Massively excited about working with Saxon Crown. In the short space of time that I have been at the club I have seen some good things that I hope we can improve and take the club to the next level. I have been coaching for 9 years and had some great results along the way. I’m looking forward to improving as a coach and I hope the club and I will grow together. Hopefully I will get to meet most of you over the next couple weeks.” Gareth was the Head Coach at Chelsea and Westminster and joins us with an excellent reputation. He swam at international level as a youth before incurring a serious injury and has since coached a variety of age levels and abilities at Manchester, Leicester and more recently at C&W. He also has a degree in Accountancy and Finance. My thanks go to those who helped in the recruitment process and special thanks to the swimmers who met all the candidates and asked some excellent questions. Gareth is spending his first month coaching a few sessions but will be mainly getting to know the Club, coaches, parents, and swimmers. We hope you will all welcome him as he gets to know us, and we will be arranging meetings to introduce him to as many of you as possible. Gareth's email is [email protected] if you'd like to contact him directly. CONGRATULATIONS Congratulations to Isabelle Clarke for achieving her Life Guard Award and to Laura Kerr for qualifying as a Level 2 Coach. Laura has been taking Dolphins and Marlins on a Friday with Sarah at Glassmill.

Now for some swimming news ARENA LEAGUE – ROUND 1 – GLASSMILL – SATURDAY 14TH OCTOBER The National Arena League is the most competitive and prestigious league that we swim in, and for the past few years we have been in the London Division One league. The first round of the new season was held in October at our home pool, Glassmill, and the Saxon Crown team showed a great display securing a great 2nd place with 244 points! One highlight is that no Saxon Crown swimmer was disqualified, a feat rarely seen in such events. Overall, we got nine 1st places, six 2nd places and three 3rd places. The final results were: Dunmow Atlantis 262 points Saxon Crown 244 points Brompton 237 points Borough of Harrow A 235 points Anaconda 226 points Team Luton 212 points Haringey Aquatics 199 points Harpenden 175 points Well done to all swimmers and thanks to all the volunteers who made the night possible, as well as to friends and parents who came to cheer the team on and create a great atmosphere.

ARENA LEAGUE – ROUND 2 – SATURDAY 11TH NOVEMBER With Round 2 taking place at Luton, the Saxon Crown team really stepped up their game and showed that despite having no open ladies on their team they were not going to let that to get in their way, securing a great 6th with 202 points! Great thanks go to our 15/under girls who had to swim their events plus the open one! Good job stepping up girls!!! Overall, we got five 1st places, six 2nd places and two 3rd places. ARENA LEAGUE – ROUND 3 – SATURDAY 8TH DECEMBER 13 Saxon Crown swimmers travelled to Beacontree Health Centre, Dagenham to swim in the last round of the Arena League. Following the results of the first two rounds we went into this round being in the top half of Division One for the final. We were competing against: - Leander Bishops Stortford Bexley Dunmow Atlantis Anacondor Borough of Harrow Greenwich Royals In the end we came 8th in the gala and 8th out of 16 overall in Division One. An incredible evening with lots of amazing swimming … well done everyone! KENT DEVELOPMENT GALA – GILLINGHAM – SATURDAY 29TH & SUNDAY 30TH OCTOBER It was great to see so many of our swimmers competing in the Kent Development meet this year. For some of them it was their first competition and a great achievement for Saxon Crown to have over 25 swimmers taking part over the weekend. Our seasoned competitors Taufeeq, Henry, Maddy and Martha led the land based warm ups and were on hand to offer support and advice to the younger swimmers competing for the first time. It is impossible to mention all of the highlights over the weekend as there were pb's all round, hoarse voices after all the cheering, a birthday and the jangling of medals as our Saxon swimmers walked around the poolside. It is incredibly heartwarming to see the support and camaraderie between our swimmers and the way they leap around cheering while their peers are competing, getting told off for being in the way by the officials (me included). A weekend of great swims, pb's, socialising and fun! Well done to all involved and let’s work on getting even more swimmers competing next year! Finally congratulations to Henry Norman for being chosen to attend the Kent Development Camp following his second place in the overall points total for the Boys U10 at the gala.

Henry Norman Gold medal on the 100 Backstroke with a 4 Seconds PB and a Silver medal on the 200 Freestyle with a 18 Seconds PB! WINTER REGIONALS – SATURDAY 4TH & SUNDAY 5TH NOVEMBER We had 7 of our swimmers compete at the Regional Winter Champs. Although it was early into the season we still had some great results managing to beat personal bests and even win some medals. One of the medals was won by Mateusz Szopinski in the 200m Butterfly with a very exciting race holding second place throughout and then in the last 50m gained the distance to finish at the exact same time as the other competitor sharing 1st place and smashing his PB with a 2:14.56 for the Gold.

The second medal of the weekend was won by Michael Foster also in the 200m Butterfly. Just as exciting because of the injury he had at the time so wasn’t expecting the best results, but Michael managed to push through the pain and bring in the Bronze with a time of 2:14.41.

KENT JUNIOR LEAGUE – ROUND 3 – SATURDAY 18 NOVEMBER This gala took place at Eltham. It was a high adrenalin, exciting but nerve racking night. The points we had accumulated over rounds one and two put us in a fantastic position to move back up into Division One depending on our results that evening. During the evening we moved between 1st and 3rd place, ending in 3rd overall which meant we missed out on moving back into Division One by just 20 points. A fantastic evening of swimming with loads of support coming from the swimmers and parents up in the viewing gallery!! 2017 MASTERS ROUNDUP 2017 was another fantastic year of swimming and socials for the Saxon Crown Masters. Here are a few of the many highlights … We started the year joining forces with Hackney at the Frank Ryder Gala to create (for one night only) the machine that was Shackney Crown – securing a mighty second place. Coach Colin received a warm return following his operation - to put our Sunday swimmers back through their paces. Huge thanks again to Imelda and Tanya for filling in whilst he was away. The summer saw us send a selection of Saxon Swimmers out to Spain for a long weekend of warm weather training. Thanks to Kristina for organising. We also saw a season of great swims - John T and Kat at the Kents and plenty of medals at the British Masters long course in Aberdeen – with Bex, Kat and Lauren taking home 7 gold, 7 silver and 3 bronze medals between them with 12pbs across 20 swims. Bex was crowned British record holder smashing the 50m freestyle in the 50-54 age group - hitting 28.82 from the previous 29.10. She then went on to swim two long open water events – 26k the length of Lake Zurich and 17k in Lake Windermere for some worthy causes. In October Kat and Lauren were off again – this time to the Nationals in Sheffield picking up a further 6 medals, and our lovely Joe represented us in the Arena League … to name just a few of our swimming successes.

We also had Saxon babies, Saxon weddings, a Saxon-Vision Song Contest, we hit a record high number of swimmers, and tried (and failed) to be selected for the next Kellogg’s Cornflakes advert. Finishing the year with a Christmas social and the traditional Christmas Quiz thanks to Ruth.

It’s been hectic, but we’re looking forwarding to making 2018 even more successful. Kelly & Ruth (Masters representatives)
