2119 Implants & Counting…!!

2000 Implants

Saveetha Dental College made history by placing over 2118 dental implants in 2 years. This year we have upgraded our implant centre with 8 physio-dispensers, 5 surgical operatories and have additionally purchased over 1000 implants from Nobel Biocare® to meet our forthcoming needs.

Many things that buzz, make into the news, but those who hog the limelight makes the headlines and that’s precisely why you are getting to hear exclusively from us this time. Every success story needs to be told, not to boast but to inspire. We, The Department of Oral Implantology are thrilled to take you through the various THREADS we turned to reach the CREST, IMPLANTING records till now. An innovative approach that was conceived 2 years ago , resulted in the inception of SAVEETHA ACADEMY OF IMPLANT DENTISTRY (SAID) under the guidance of Dr. Deepak Nallaswamy , Dr.N.Thiyaneswaran, Dr. Pon Kirubha Robin and Dr. Prabhalakshmi.

Our college is by far the only college in India to include the subject of Oral Implantology in the mainstream curriculum for under-graduates; Since theory without practical is only half the job done, we are pleased to inform that this is the only dental college in the entire world wherein the Interns and the final years are allowed to placed 6 implants.

2000 Implants

Stunning stats Numbers speak for themselves and when we sum them up, they are no more numericals, they are labelled as “RECORDS”.

2000 implants and still counting…!! This thumping milestone has been reached on 4th Feb 2015.

61 full mouth implant cases have been successfully completed, till date.

An array of cases ranging from ridge expansions to augmentations, grafting techniques and sinus lifts (Direct and Indirect) have been performed under watchful eyes of eminent faculty.

Needless to say, all these milestones have accredited us with an unflinching success rate of more than 99% among the implants placed so far.

Continental barriers need to be crossed when the quench for knowledge has to be satiated at the right place. The witness for this is the hosting of an Australian program for Dentists who are trained in placing implants confidently on patients. 3 batches comprising upto 12 Dentists from Australia train with us every year. The department is pleased to have conducted a 2 days pre-conference course on “Clinical Implant Dentistry” as a run up to the 27th ISDR conference, during which enthusiastic dentists from all over the country had actively participated in the interactive seminar and picked up invaluable skills from what could aptly be called as a “fully-packed hands-on course” headed by Dr.N.Thiyaneswaran. It was a privilege to have amidst us Dr.R.C.Hertel from Netherlands,a renowned Implantologist who performed live-surgical procedures and also delivered informative interactive sessions.

Research is invariably a prime cornerstone in the advancement of any field. Thus, we have collaborated with the Animal house to conduct scaffold studies, stem cell studies as well as gene expression studies. Academically, we now have a 1 yr Fellowship in Oral Implantology as well as a 2 year M.S Oral Implantology course for which students from all over India are enthusiastically vying.

Montessori In Dental Education

If we get to converse to a Grade I students and ask how many are there in your class ? They would reply” 30 – 35.” We in a professional college have Montessori training for 15 students in a class with 20 min – 20 min active learning.

As schools have evolved from simple alphabet learning to ball, stick and wing methods” we too had made it simplified to our students as they would remember their subjects for ever like alphabets in their memories.

We have imbibed kinesiology in our teaching system. It means the sensation of position, movement and tension of parts of the body. This relieves stress blockage in the brain hence better ‘chemical ‘ stimulation occurs.

Kinesiology paired with dynamic learning, tape assisted learning, peer tutoring, look and listen method help students feel at ease in classroom.

Dynamic learning helps students visualise and learn. Tape assisted learning includes audio – visuals being played in during the lectures. Peer tutoring with “Pause, Prompt and Praise” by the students. Last but not the least includes the look and listen method with live demonstration using patients and models as well. Hence we would call ourselves evolving …… but not evolved.

When some one looks through our clinics they would get amazed by the environment provided to our students. Here too the Montessori method of education is being followed. It is a method which values the child’s interest. It emphasises on physical, social, emotional and cognitive development. Students from first year through internship work together, where the first and second year observe, analyse and understand which results in better cognition. This mixture of younger and older group of students stimulates active discussion among students but the older students teach the younger ones causing better absorption and internalisation of the subjects.

We have provided separate workstation which yields them independence, uninterrupted blocks of work time and a sense of responsibility. The student, teacher and the environment triangle makes each of them move towards the peak of the triangle. Hence we proudly acknowledge that our students can provide the best comprehensive treatment to the patients.

Due to our constant efforts to improve further, there have been dramatic break throughs, that point the way to more cost-effective alternatives, benefiting our patients. There are however changes under way within our institution that suggests significant improvements in quality and value can be achieved. Social Transformation through Women Empowerment & Role of Media

A PIECE OF AWARENESS- By Ms. Fiby Mary Philip (Intern)

Women Empowerment, Women rights are the most common slogans and hashtags that we could find airing in the atmosphere these days. If you take Indian population’s sex ratio it would come up to 943 female against 1000 males (according to the last census in 2011). That really is a huge number. But my question is, does all the women in our country are really aware about all these enchantments that are happening for them? I personally think, not.

I can only be a bit more on the diplomatic side of the statement ‘Social transformation and the impact of women empowerment-role of media’, let’s talk about the former first. Yes, the women era has brought down lot of changes in this transforming socialist cum market mix economies of the world but no that is just a minimal percentage that you could count up on as such. Consider India, our very own country, where, the women can also be found as gods even [on a positive note].

India was forced to its liberalisation in 1991 and to a greater extend it has not have given much of its impact on our country, people and especially women till the early 2000s. Why was it so?? Though the country wanted to have a completely progressive attitude since ’91, its very own sanguine nature did not allow doing so.

The whole new concept of extending the boundaries started somewhere in 2000 which paved the way to the whole new idea called the ‘women empowerment’ in a way it is hilarious to see in a country where the women are given the priority even for a small piece of seating space in the bus are struggling for their existence as the feminine human nature. The whole idea was to and is to implement that the women are all together equal to men and they should be treated equally as men in all perspective [again in a positive note]. So, what does it [the women empowerment] has to do with social transformation??

For a while, let’s leave our country [for good] since, you all know what is happening in our country. Let’s take it in a broader perspective; I would like to invite one more person in to my conversation before we move ahead, ‘The media’. Media-trend-lifestyle as you can see, are the most fascinating and at times throat choking trios of the 21st century. Whatever the media says is considered as the facts and whatever the media shows are believed to be the truths of the world. The major social reforms started when the media took the highway to hell of a being a progressive stand, to uplift the whole new ideas and reforms of the modern era. People saw a new dawn of relations endowing upon them.

They began to see, they began to learn, and they began to understand others and moreover started to respect each other’s views. It paved way to something called the Global Village as we know it. Perspectives became boarder and benevolent while the magnitude of the barriers became non-existent to a greater extend [both demographic and psychographic]. Mass media has established itself as the Messiah of the present era.

Almost in all the countries the feminine human being was considered to be the secondary when it comes in terms of the comparison with the man. You can either take it as a law of nature where all the females of the nature should condemn themselves to the males of its own kind for the prosperity and existence of the very own being. Even in the holy book of Christians, The Bible, it is shown that the woman was created to be with the man and to castaway his loneliness. I think people actually didn’t get what it was written. It has been written ‘to be “with” the man’ and not “under” them. Present era global and cultural transformation does emphasis on this factor in a great manner. The empowerment of women in their very own rights and in their co-existence with men endows a lime light on the wide untapped areas of social transformation. The media should take this as an errand in order to establish a better social life.
