Introduction

Sarah Friend and James Canter lived in the Western part of Virginia near the

Ohio River from 1800 to 1850. This area would eventually become the Mason and

Jackson Counties of WV. Sarah and James first came to our attention when researching

Andrew Friend and His Family: The Earliest Pioneers of the Potomac River,

2nd Edition (2013). We have found no physical description of the couple, nor any letters,

deeds, legal papers or final resting place. James Canter can be found in 1840 US Census

with seven persons below the age of twenty. We believe Sarah and James were the

parents of at least six children (Jonas, Thomas, Friend, George Washington, Levina and

Lewis), although we do not discount there might have been more children. Starting with

this limited information, Sarah and James were to become the initial focal point of this

book. Our research would reveal a huge extended family that started with their children

that was expanded through innumerable descendants. Although their origins were

humble, this family would be linked to the American Civil War, with all five sons serving

in the Union Army. Although tested with war, they would survive and evolve as a family

over the next hundred and fifty years.

The information in this book was been gathered from multiple resources through

the Internet. If we have failed to cite a specific source, we would like to apologize, for it

has become difficult to determine the initial source of information. This book has several

goals, which was to gather, sort and preserve information about Sarah Friend, James

Canter and their extended family before it is lost to time.

About the Authors

Patricia Ann (Friend) Thompson was born and raised in Garrett County,

Maryland. Pat’s first book on the Friend family was John Friend Sr. of Friendsville,

MD (2007), the patriarch of the Friend Family in Garrett County Maryland. Patricia is a

descended from of John Friend Sr. his sons John Jr. and Charles. Patricia is a descendant

of numerous Garrett County families such as Enlow, Harvey, Tasker, Murphy, Upole and

Thrasher. Pat is a Life Member (#889) of the FFAA and currently serves as 1st Vice

President of the organization. Pat is a member (#854484) of the National Society of the

Daughters of the American Revolution, Youghiogheny Glades Chapter (through John

Friend Sr.) and a member of The Swedish Colonial Society. Pat currently lives in

Frederick County, Maryland with husband, John (Scoop) Thompson and their two dogs.

Patrick Thomas Smith was born in Oakland, Maryland and grew up in Western

Maryland. Pat is a graduate of Frostburg State College (B.S.), West Virginia University

(M.S.) and Texas A&M University (Ph.D.). Pat is also descended through John Friend Sr.

sons: John Jr., Charles, and Joseph, as well as numerous Garrett County families such as

Echard, Harvey, Hinebaugh, Glotfelty, McRobie and Wilson. Pat’s first book on the

Garrett County Friends was The Maps and Papers of William H.H. Friend. Pat is

currently the 2nd vice president of the FFAA as well as a Life Member (#1102). Pat lives

in Frederick County, Maryland with his wife, Roxanne and daughter

Emma Gustav Smith.
