INTRODUCTION

The Sara Gotcher Collection was donated by Sara Gotcher. The collection contains

approximately 365 items arranged into 3 boxes. Access to this collection may be permitted for

the purposes of personal and scholarly research. The Montgomery County Archives requires that

the following credit line be used in all publications to identify that the image or document used is

from its holdings: Courtesy of the Montgomery County Archives. Specific citation of where the

image or document is located (collection, box, folder, etc.) should be made in an

acknowledgements section, footnote, or bibliography.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

In 2016, Sara Gotcher donated this collection to the Montgomery County Archives. This

collection includes scripts, correspondence, programs, posters, newspapers, photographs, and

assorted materials related to her position as assistant professor at Austin Peay State University as

well as various local theatre productions. Materials from the productions Clarksville Movin’ On!,

by George Mabry, A Heartbeat to Baghdad, by Glyn O’Malley, and several versions of the

Montgomery County Historical Society’s annual production Dinner with the Dead are included

in the collection. Other Montgomery County Historical Society productions represented are The

Famous and the Forgotten, Who’s Coming to Dinner and various cemetery tours.

A native of Clarksville, Dr. Sara Gotcher earned her MFA from the University of Florida

and her doctorate in theatre history from Louisiana State University. In 1990 she returned to

Clarksville to teach in the theatre program at Austin Peay State University. She served as an

associate professor of theatre and dance at Austin Peay State University until her retirement,

around 2015. During her time there she directed many stage productions, including several in

conjunction with the Montgomery County Historical Society (MCHS). This collection reflects

her collaboration with the Historical Society as well as other playwrights documenting the

history of Montgomery County through theatre productions.

The bulk of the collection focuses on MCHS productions between 2006 and 2011,

particularly the 2008 stage play Dinner with the Dead: The Roaring Twenties in a River Town.

This play focused on local African American history and highlights some less well-known

historical figures. A portion of the historical research for this play is included in the collection.

The collection is arranged by production, as it was originally donated. Oversized items

were removed and added to the end of the collection. During the processing of this collection

some duplicate items, including newspapers and emails, were weeded. All photographs are

housed in the Archives Photograph Collection.
