T. H. U. S. 2012 - By Gary Barlow contributing editor for The Sandkicker

I wonder if 2012 is going to be a historical year as 2011 was for our shag

club. I asked in a newsletter last year for our club members to “let’s make

our own history.” Our officers and committee members have taken this sug-

gestion and blazed a trail to where our shag club has assumed it’s rightful

place. Point in case is the very successful parade float that SBSC entered in

the Morganton Christmas Parade 2011. Success is more than being awarded

a trophy for Best in Theme. I have been involved in parades, fund raisers,

March of Dime Walks. NEVER, NEVER have I seen a group of volunteers

come together with such a desire, enthusiasm and dedication to complete a

task. Ken and Doris served as chairpersons. Ken’s son, Haze stepped up to

drive the parade truck and did a smooth job. Doris stayed on top of the ac-

tivities both inside and out. Ken stayed busy keeping her settled down. He

had such a calming effect on everyone. Robin Little has a sixth sense about

how to put things together in her mind and has the ability to jump from one

aspect to another without missing a step. Everyone and every activity in-

volved, just flowed. They all stepped up when and where needed. The pa-

rade committee met 5 different times to mold their ideal into a theme. We

had one outside work day before the parade. The ladies worked on the palm

trees, cut the fabric for the skirting. Joyce Kincaid has a way with a paint

brush that none can equal.

Dean Friesland, Alan Brown, James Bentley, John Carpenter, Will

Honeycutt, and Sanford did a bang up job engineering the construction of the

float. After a nine hour day the group decided we would meet on the morn-

ing of parade day to finish. Who would have known that it was going to

rain!! There was no dampening of spirits on December 6th even though it

rained morning till night. When we got to the staging area uptown we

worked frantically to finish by 6:30 pm. At 5pm, about 10 of us walked to

the restaurant to grab a burger. We had just ordered, when Ken came in to

announce we had 5 minutes to get back to the float to be judged. We all

grabbed our wet rain gear and headed back to the streets. The rest is history

and you should be proud to have been involved in such an endeavor. Earlier

I mentioned success is more than a tin trophy. Success is the bonding that

many of you felt the club has achieved during this process. I know I echo

our club President’s sentiments when I say thank you for all the ones that

came out and participated, walked in the rain, worked in the rain and sup-

ported one another so faithfully. Let’s have another year as successful as

2011.
