What is a SAN? Well, technically….

• Storage Area Network• (SAN) is a high-speed subnetwork of shared

Storage devices.

• A storage device is a machine that contains nothing but a disk or disks for storing data.

What makes a SAN Better than what I have?

Chances are you are still running local servers with local storage. Here are some questions that might make you a little bit more open to the idea of a SAN.

1.How much of your current disk (per server) is empty space?1. A SAN will maximize your disk usage on a per host basis.2. A SAN can dynamically expand the size of a LUN to a defined

parameter (Disk Provisioning)2.How many channels or paths are available to your data?

1. Fault Tolerant storage is built in to provide multiple paths to your data in the event you lose a server.

3.Are you servers highly available? 1. With a SAN, you gain the ability to cluster servers for added

redundancy and tolerance.

There are quite a few options….

Page 9: S.A.N. Solutions

Dell SAN MD3000i

• The first SAN we will entail is the Dell MD3000i

• The PowerVault MD3000i networked storage array leverages the modularity and availability of the PowerVault series to deliver an IP network storage solution that can consolidate up to 16 hosts. By extending the connectivity capability of today’s MD3000 controller architecture, Dell is able to bring to market a low cost, easy to use, expandable, and highly available iSCSI SAN storage array.

Page 10: S.A.N. Solutions

Dell SAN MD3000i

1. Standard: This model has a single controller with two 1Gb Ethernet ports. The single controller model is the most cost effective option for directly connecting two non-HA hosts per system or deploying a shared configuration with an Ethernet switch for connecting up to 16 hosts non-redundantly. 2. High Availability: This model has dual controllers with two 1Gb Ethernet ports per controller for a total of four 1Gb Ethernet ports. This dual controller option is ideal for a redundant 2-node cluster, 4 non-HA hosts per system or deploying a HA shared configuration with an Ethernet switch for connecting up to 16 fully redundant hosts.

There are two configurations possible with this particular SAN.

HP MSA2000i

The HP StorageWorks 2000i G2 Modular Smart Array selection of SAN devices features the very latest in efficient consolidation, functionality and technology at very affordable prices. The ideal customers needing to consolidate their storage include smaller companies with tight budgets and limited IT expertise, or larger companies that have perhaps hundreds of smaller departments and remote locations. The MSA2000i G2 features a 1 Gb Ethernet (1 GbE) iSCSI connected array. It allows customers to grow their storage as demands increase up to 29.7 TB SAS or 60 TB SATA, supporting up to 32 hosts for iSCSI attach. All models support the optional HP StorageWorks 2000 Modular Smart Array Snapshot Software which offers controller-based snapshot and cloning functionality. Planning for future growth is easy by starting with the basic modular pieces and adding capacity as needs arise.

HP MSA2000i

• Start small and grow in number of supported servers and total capacity Support for 512 LUNs with sizes up to 16 TB: • The MSA2000i G2 with 512 LUNs has more than sufficient LUNs for storage configuration flexibility. Increased level of data

protection: • All models support the optional HP StorageWorks MSA2000 Snapshot Software which offers controller-based Snapshot and

cloning functionality for increased data protection. Controller-based snaps produce space-efficient, copy-on-write Snapshots and clones. High availability for business continuity:

• Reduce risk of IT failure with active/active controllers, dual-ported drives, and redundant hardware components. Improve productivity and prevent data loss:

• RAID 0, 1, 3, 5, 6, 10, 50. Redundant hardware with automatic failover resulting in less downtime.
