COMICS COME TO LIFEBY MELISSA HUTSELL

In the world of comics, Stockton certainly plays an important role; as home to the annual StocktonCon, the opening crash site of the Fantastic Four series, and perhaps most notably, home to artist Tony DeZuñiga.

SEASONAL STARTERS & SIPPERSBY MELISSA HUTSELL

Celebrate the season and indulge your restless palate with crisp, flavorful options as you explore San Joaquin’s chic selection of light plates and delicious drinks. From savory salads to sensational sippers, and tons of mouthwatering plates in between, we’ve compiled a list of some must-try dishes that colorfully compliment summer’s end and fall’s beginning.

FALL COLORS TOURBY DON & ANN JACKSON

For nearly twenty years we’ve talked about doing a fall colors tour to New England, placed it on our bucket list and for a variety of reasons just kept postponing. Finally this past fall season we got our act together and made plans for late September. Although fall color tours are offered by numerous luxury bus firms we opted for renting a car and doing it on our own. And that was a great decision.

EDUCATION IN SAN JOAQUINOur community is dedicated to the success of it’s future: children. As our home continues to evolve and grow, education in San Joaquin does the same; offering an abundance of diverse education options including accredited charter schools, preparatory, parochial and performing arts academies, special education and alternative education programs.

PUBLISHER'S NOTE

14 SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE | JULY 2015

As summer winds to an end, my family and I are packing in all the Central Valley has to offer before they return to school. Luckily, finding

one-of-a-kind experiences for their back to school blues is no hassle. If your ready to dust off those super-villan or hero costume early this year, then head to this month’s StocktonCon. The dedication and authenticity of attendees’ costumes are enough to keep you occupied all day, while up close and personal meetings with icons like Richard Hatch and Danny Slavin (Leo Corbett of Power Rangers Lost Galaxy) brings me back to my children’s youth, and Sunday mornings spent watching the rangers in pajamas. Now, things are a little different, the classic cartoons and characters of their youth have been replaced with Disney’s phenomenon, Elsa, and others. But, much to my liking, my daughter has remained steadfast in her love for classic characters and movies, like Cinderella, The Lion King and Fern Gully; while my son is on the cutting edge of technology, living up to his characteristics of a Millennial, designing video games, creating a following on YouTube and participating in Xbox competitions. The creation of many iconic characters of my time, and even video game concepts that influence the games my son plays today, took place in Stockton, as it was home to the late Tony DeZuñiga. His strong presence in the industry is kept alive through his intense influence, and art, that can be viewed at his wife’s Stockton restaurant, Red Orchids. As she shared Tony’s story, we learned of his involvement in Marvel Comics, illustrations for Spiderman, Fantastic Four, Batman, Superwoman and even his work with Sega as a videogame conceptual

designer. We learned some pretty cool local facts; the opening crash site of the Fantastic Four series was right here, in Stockton! If you’re looking for some inspiration of your own, as you bid your kids farewell and return to enjoying the benefits of education in San Joaquin, consider a different type of school- like Tracy Municipal Airport’s SkyView Flight Academy. Not much could be more thrilling than flying through the air, as the pilot, receiving an unbelievable birds eye view. So we took a look at the academy, and think you should, too! While exploring the many education options here in San Joaquin, we’re happy to report that our community’s focus on innovative, personalized education is continuing to grow; offering children quality education under any circumstance. As we adults know, school isn’t always the greatest experience. Hats off to the children that go to school every morning with a smile- and hats off to the San Joaquin Office of Education for creating alternative options for those struggling in a public school setting. We all know the varying personalities, learning styles, focus and productivity of children are vast- and we’re happy to report that our community is doing all they can to offer creative, top-notch education for every type of child.

Thanks for reading,

THE STORY OF TONY DEZUÑIGABY MELISSA HUTSELL | PHOTOGRAPHY DAN HOOD

In the world of comics, Stockton certainly plays an important role; as home to the annual StocktonCon, the opening crash site of the Fantastic Four series, and perhaps most notably, home to Tony DeZuñiga. Stockton has many claims to fame, but one of the city’s best-kept secrets is Tony DeZuñiga, comic book illustrator, letterer, husband and father. Chances are, even if you’re not a graphic novel fan, you are more than familiar with his work. From major motion pictures to comic art and video game concepts, Tony created and inspired hundreds of stories and illustrations before his passing in May 2012.

DeZuñiga began his career as the first Filipino to take the American comic book industry by storm. It’s no suprise, as Tony’s fondness for graphic novels ignited his childhood, motivating him to create work of his own. He began his career as a letterer, publishing his own work in a local magazine at the young age of 16. From there, Tony focused on graphic design; even moving to New York where he later met DC Comics’ Editor, Joe Orlando, who helped launch him into stardom. Tony created illustrations and storylines for DC Comics, as a regular contributor, and used his influence to not only promote his own career, but many others. In 1971, Tony convinced Orlando and DC Comics Publisher Carmine Infanino to visit the Philippines, where they could better invest in new artists. Here, they recruited such artists as Nestor Redondo, Alfredo Alcala, Fred Carillo and Alex Niño. “Tony paved the way for Filipino artists, who are still to this day, enjoying the privilege,” says Tony’s wife Tina DeZuñiga, as she remembers him fondly for his passion, characters and prominence in the industry. “He not only created beautiful pictures, he told a story through action,” she adds, “it was like watching a movie.”

DON’T MISS THIS YEAR’S

STOCKTONCONAT THE STOCKTON ARENA

AUGUST 8-9, 2015STOCKTONCON.COM

Calling all characters! Join thousands of local superheroes, cartoon characters, zombies and all things pop culture at this year’s StocktonCon, held at the Stockton Arena. The event, now celebrating its fourth annual affair, gives visitors a chance to experience the outstanding artists in San Joaquin County, and those on the big screen, or in your favorite books. This year’s event will include costume and art contests, and a chance to meet celebrities like Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler, Angus Oblong, William Salyers

Dan Parsons and many more.

Tina and Tony met in 2001, at Tina’s restaurant, Red Orchids, located in downtown Stockton. They quickly hit it off, both sharing a love for art. Together, the two traveled the world, attending events from Spain to Canada, and each year, San Diego’s famed Comic-Con. Among his many accomplishments as an inker, illustrator and cover artist for both Marvel and DC Comics, Tony co-created characters like Jonah Hex; the main character of the 2010 film Jonah Hex, grossing more than $10 million at national box offices; Conan the Barbarian, the Black Orchid, Olivier, Sean Dolan and Marie Castle, and illustrated works for X-men, Fantastic Four, Robo Cop, Batman, Spiderman, and Superwoman, in addition to his creation of more than six covers for Star Wars. But his favorite, says Tina, was Thor, “because he was the son of God.” During his extensive career, Tony lent his artistic genius to Sega as a videogame conceptual designer. While living in San Joaquin, Tony spent time with the Lodi Art Commission, where he taught others; as an artist of all mediums, using acrylic, oil, watercolor, pencils or any other tools to create. “He always shared his talent,” says Tina, who speaks of perfection in every piece he created, and his fans who loved him so. Tony’s impact was honored further, through an array of prestigious awards within the industry, including The Ink Pot Award, the highest honor in the comic industry. During his late career, Tina and Tony’s daughter, Ann, was firsthand witness to the impact Tony made on the industry, his fans and fellow comic book artists. Now, Tina and Ann reside in Stockton, where they own Red Orchids Restaurant. The restaurant includes a tribute to Tony, where his work (and art from his mentors) is on display. Tina continues to promote her husband’s work and legacy. Each year, she attends San Diego’s Comic-Con, and StocktonCon, where she hosts an annual dinner at her restaurant. Though Tony created many heroes through his illustrations, he was one in his own right. Through his timeless illustrations, and his family’s memoirs, Tony lives on as a source of pride not only for the comic book industry, but for San Joaquin, as one of the greatest artist of our time.

West 12 Ranch, located just outside of Lodi, offers San Joaquin more than baby horses, rustic structures and gorgeous photo-ops. The ranch is also Barbara Butterworth’s creative hub, and home to West 12 Hoopla! Here, is where Butterworth brings recycled and repurposed materials to life through decorative home and garden displays like garden totems, cake and dessert displays, and jewelry catchers. Conception started in 2011 when Barbara traveled down the Californian coast from Oregon. Along the way, Barbara and her husband stopped at various farmers markets. Inspired by the artwork and creativity, Barbara began collecting colored pieces of glassware. With no initial purpose or vision, “my husband was concerned I was becoming a hoarder,” laughs Barbara. But after months of collecting pieces, she had a dream. “God opened my eyes to

art- especially shapes and colors,” explains Barbara, who never considered herself artistic. Today, her working collection contains hundreds of pieces of vintage glass, metal and china items, reflecting different eras and hailing from around the world. These miss-matched pieces fuse to form her original works, which can take up to six months to create and come with information on each individual piece’s origin and history. “Creating gives me a sense of joy,” says Barbara. “What started as a hobby is now one of West 12 Ranch’s newest offerings!”

FACEBOOK FRENZYConnect with Us to Share your Story,

Win Weekly Prizes & Tell us What You’d like to See in SJ Magazine

BY LINDSEY RODRIAN

Facebook’s humble beginning was the brainchild of 19-year old Mark Zuckerberg, who launched the site as a Harvard sophomore in 2004. His original endeavor, facemash.com, invited visitors to compare Harvard students’ photos side-by-side, allowing users to decide who was “hot” and who was “not.” Mark acquired these photos by hacking into Harvard’s database. The demeaning function of Facemash led students to demand the site be taken down.

upfront 209 * TRENDS | PEOPLE | CULTURE | STYLE

But, Mark continued on, purchasing the domain thefacebook.com, a site with a slightly purer goal of connecting students. Shortly after the launch, Facebook exploded with hundreds of users, gaining attention from Sean Parker, the former co-founder of Napster (remember that gem!?) With his advice, private investors, interest in company stocks and part ownerships came by the thousands. Today, Facebook continues to expand, operating as the largest social media outlet in the world. You, your mom, dad, sister cousin and even grandma use Facebook daily; totaling an astonishing 936 million daily users as of March 2015, according to Facebook statistics. With the purpose to stay connected, discover new businesses and events, and keep up to date on what’s going on in the world and your own personal circle, Facebook reigns. It is reported that each Facebook user spends an average of 30 minutes per day on the site…however, that seems a little low to us. It’s hard to avoid scrolling through your news feed when you’re feeling stagnant at work, waiting for a friend, or lounging at home. We at San Joaquin Magazine have been amping up our Facebook page to bring you news, an afternoon laugh,

reminders of not to miss events, and great products and services from local businesses. We love interacting with you, and we love hearing about your favorite places to eat, shop and play in San Joaquin. So, keep us in your thoughts and on your news feed for opportunity to win a slew of prizes each week, discover new hot spots, and share with us stories or topics you’d like to see in our magazine. In honor of Mark’s mission to connect, we hope to utilize his billion-dollar creation to form stronger relationships with you, our readers, and the public. Our small staff is dedicated to filling the pages of our monthly magazine with the most notable people, organizations and offerings the Central Valley possesses; and we’d love to share your story, and input. Stay connected with us! Whether it be comments on a post, or a private message, we want to hear from you! Tell us what you’re interested in learning about; who deserves to be honored for their good works; and local stories that need to be shared. We look forward to learning more about you, and for that we thank you, Facebook!

READY FOR TAKE OFF Tracy Municipal Airport’s SkyView Flight Academy

BY COPPER WILLIAMS

There’s nothing quite like the exhilaration felt when looking out the window of a plane. Gazing out and onto the world below; the sky meets the earth across the horizon, combining in a glorious tapestry of clouds and color. Now imagine you’re the pilot... SkyView Flight Academy is an aviation school located at the Tracy Municipal Airport. With great weather and close proximity to the Bay Area, it’s been a top tier school for aspiring pilots around the Central Valley and beyond. The academy hosts four full-time instructors and a few part-time, with eleven various aircrafts specifically tailored to train. “We’ve been a flight school for eight years,” says Richard Ortenheim, owner of SkyView Academy. “All of my instructors are highly experienced.” Richard’s school has been ahead of the game, when it comes to the rigorous guidelines all aviation schools follow. “Our school has already adopted new scenario-based training that will be mandatory starting next year.” The academy’s doors are open for both domestic and international students looking to try their hands at flying. “We just received our 141 Certification to train international students and now we can apply for the GI Bill,” explains Richard. This bill will allow the school to retrain veterans who’ve been pilots, looking to get back up into the air once again. Anyone looking to become a pilot must first meet the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) medical airmen standards. Those who meet the standards receive a medical certificate to prove they’re in top form for flight! It’s then that a potential student must come to the academy, in person or online, to fill out an application.

32 SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE | AUGUST 2015

upfront 209 * TRENDS | PEOPLE | CULTURE | STYLE

Once accepted, the school works with the student to create a specific program for their individual needs. If the student would like to go for their private license, and has time to come into the academy two to three times a week, that student could receive their license in as little as three to four months! When they aren’t in the air, trainees are given plenty of bookwork for self-study with lessons that drill them on pre-flight questions to guarantee they’ve done their homework. Once the instructor ensures that each student has learned what they need to know to safely go up in the air, the student leaves the ground for some in-flight training! After they return to the runway, it’s time for the instructor to let their pupil know what they’ve done right and what they need to work on. This training continues until the student is ready for the FAA written test. Passing this test gives the student opportunity to go up in the air for one more in-flight exam, but this time they’re heading up for the ultimate test with an FAA member. One smooth flight later and the student is ready to receive their license!

CULTIVATING CHILDHOODErin Guy Castillo & The Mary Graham Children’s Foundation

BY COPPER WILLIAMS

upfront 209 * TRENDS | PEOPLE | CULTURE | STYLE

Erin Guy Castillo is a Stocktonian on a mission. That mission has led her to become a board member and Vice President with the Mary Graham Children’s Foundation. What is Erin’s aim? To help the children of San Joaquin County who have fallen on the hardest times of all.

Erin was raised in Stockton and has spent her entire childhood in the local school systems. Even her college years first began at Delta. She used one of their many transfer programs to enroll in California State University, Fullerton and then onto University of San Francisco School of Law. After graduation, building a family and living in a variety of places both in and out of the state, Erin decided it was time to return to her hometown in 2009. It was here in Stockton that she began her efforts in reaching out to her community. “I feel very fortunate,”says Erin. “I have a profession that gives me financial freedom and independence. I knew, when my husband and

I came back, that we were here for the long haul.” It was this drive to support her community that eventually drew Erin to the Mary Graham Children’s Foundation. The Mary Graham Children’s Foundation (MGCF), first established in 2001, is a private, non-profit organization dedicated to the provision of safe and adequate housing for at-risk youth in San Joaquin County. But, over time, its reach extended. The MGCF now wears many hats, with the execution of their Trade School and College Scholarship Program, and ongoing support of the Mary Graham Children’s Shelter. The scholarship program provides children reaching adulthood with resources needed to continue on to higher education. This extends to other living expenses like car repairs or a new computer. Scholarship recipients are also given an adult mentor for ongoing guidance and support; small, but crucial, things that many people don’t think twice about. Some of the most important parts of life stem from the little things; and the MGCF strives to bring the little things to the children of the shelter. “Birthdays, games, going out to eat... These kids don’t have that chance. We’re able to provide money so that childhood can happen.” A childhood that, Erin knows, many children don’t receive when they’re in the system. “I really wanted to do something that helped kids. And these kids, in particular, are ones who are in a

shelter through no fault of their own.” In 2012, just two years after moving back home, Erin became a member of the board, rallying support for MGCF’s charity drives and outreach programs. “We have the money to help. It’s been really important for me, to not only provide needed services, but get the word out to San Joaquin foster youth that we exist.” Extending the foundation’s reach gives opportunity to help even more children succeed, Erin’s favorite aspect of her commitment to MGCF. “I get to see the children I’ve worked with out in the community, succeeding... and I know why I am so dedicated to this cause.” When she isn’t working diligently to help our youth, Erin’s using her time to participate in it. Don’t be surprised to find her taking a long jog with friends around town or savoring a sip from one of the many wineries in our county. She’s a huge fan of where she’s from. “Stockton! There is always a special spot in my heart for Stockton.”

ICONIC ARTISTSOF OUR PAST

BY RACHAEL FLEMING

Stockton is known for its many prominent features like the inland Port and University of the Pacific; as well as attracting noteworthy visitors such as Richard Nixon, Babe Ruth, and John Wayne. A lesser known aspect of the town and county’s history is the amount of artists who called this area home at one time or another. Here is a look at the artists who resided in San Joaquin throughout our county’s past. Willis E. Davis (1855-1910) was born in Stockton to a 49er who found wealth in the California Gold Rush through the manufacturing of lime. Educated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Davis earned a degree in science and literature in preparation for a career in the mining business. After a successful career in San Francisco and Santa Cruz, he retired and started painting landscapes. He painted for pleasure, but soon served on many clubs and boards including the Bohemian Club, San Francisco Art Association and Mark Hopkins Institute of Art. William Seltzer Rice (1873-1963) was born in Pennsylvania and studied at Drexel Institute and the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art. Here, he met Frederick Meyer, who later became an Art Supervisor for the Stockton public school system. Once in this position, he hired Rice in 1900 as his assistant, who he eventually promoted to supervisor in 1902.

Rice explored much of California, including the wonders of Yosemite and Lake Tahoe, as well as the man-made Spanish Missions and Golden Gate Bridge. Rice captured many of his exploits in an art form known as Woodblock Printing. This technique originated in China but Rice was influenced by the Japanese version he saw at the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco. Through his painting, photography and sketching, he developed his own style by turning his original works into block prints. Besides inspiration from his travels, the city of Stockton also inspired many of his water colors. Arthur Earl Haddock (1895-1980) was born in San Joaquin County near Clements. He studied at the San Francisco Art Institute, but received most of his artistic education through his mentor Maynard Dixon. Using oil and water color, Haddock was a prolific landscape painter, perhaps inspired by his long career as a railroad employee. In 1922, Haddock started a studio in Stockton with his first one-man show displayed at the newly dedicated museum in Victory Park, the Haggin Memorial Museum. These are just a few examples of well-known artists who have called Stockton home. Each had their own specialty and medium, however, similarities are found in more than their shared home land, but also in the vivid colors each used to bring to life the beautiful scenes they experienced here in our home.

In 1990, Bank of Stockton acquired the photograph collection of late

photographer, Leonard Covello, with the purpose of preserving local history. The

collection contained images dating back to the 1850s and at that time, consisted

of more than 21,000 photos from the Central Valley, the Mother Lode and

surrounding communities. The collection included over 1,711 original fragile,

glass plate negatives taken by portrait photographer Thomas W. Wells and

photographer Van Covert Martin in the early 1900s.

Through the vision of the late Robert M. Eberhardt, Bank of Stockton President

1969-1994, and Douglass M. Eberhardt, Bank of Stockton CEO, the entire collection

was digitally scanned into a secure, visual database. The technology

allowed the bank to maintain the images of the past for perpetuity in the safest of

environments, while being able to preserve them to share with future generations.

The collection has since grown to over 31,000 images, thanks to many families

and individuals, who have donated or shared their treasured old photographs.

From old family photo albums found in a closet or basement, to single photos

discovered in drawers or hidden in books, we welcome all vintage images and

information for review and are happy to physically or digitally add them to the

archive if they complement the subject matter of our Historical Collection.

If you would like to personally review the collection, please call our archivist,

William Maxwell, at 209-929-1575 to make an appointment.

SEASONAL

starterssippersAND

BY MELISSA HUTSELL | PHOTOS BY DAN HOOD

Celebrate the season and iw as you explore San Joaquin’s chic selection of light plates and delicious drinks. There’s no guilt in healthy alternatives that complement local seasonal produce. The best part? You can stay true to your waistline while gratifying your cravings, without a heavy stomach. The warm weather calls for something refreshing – and our fabulous restaurants surely deliver! From savory salads to sensational sippers, and tons of mouthwatering plates in between, we’ve compiled a list of must-try dishes that colorfully

complement summer’s end and welcome the fall harvest.

Tomato Caprese Salad & Ceviche at Centrale Kitchen & Bar

Enjoy these last weeks of summer with creative, fresh and colorful starters from Central’s seasonal menu. In an ode to the bountiful harvest months, there is no better time to find tasty varieties of tomatoes. The restaurant’s Tomato Caprese Salad combines fresh mozzarella cheese and basil with a balsamic reduction. For something a little meatier, but still light, Centrale’s Ceviche will hit the spot. The traditional dish is a spicy mix of cucumber, jicama and white tiger prawns inspired by Chef Bernard Martinez’s trips throughout Mexico. “It’s great, light and refreshing– there’s nothing like an ice cold beer and ceviche on a hot summer day…it also makes for a perfect Sunday morning hangover cure,” says Chef Bernard.

Crab Stuffed Piquillo Pepper Salad & Ahi Nachos

at M&J Bistro

Tracy’s own taste of San Francisco offers guests gourmet food from its seasonal, and ever evolving French-Basque fusion menu. Satiating starters such as the Crab Stuffed Piquillo Pepper Salad capture the season’s best and bring out the restaurant’s Spanish influences. The salad is made with whole roasted Piquillo bell peppers, arugula, green onions and wild caught crab, topped with a “refreshingly spicy bleu cheese sauce, that is just simply tasteful,” says co-owner and Chef, Jason Rucker. For a Mexican-Japanese inspired dish, a year round favorite and sensational starter, the bistro’s Ahi Nachos are made from a fusion of thinly sliced Ahi placed on tortilla chips with green onions, shredded carrots, chopped black olives and an impeccable avocado-horseradish sauce accompanied with a slightly sweet duck sauce, “Taste the best of

both worlds!” encourages Chef Rucker.

With the choice of meat or seafood, this fresh mix of in-season fruit (such as strawberries or blueberries, kiwis or pomegranate) makes for a refreshing salad that is satiating, filling and colorful- leaving eyes just as happy as stomachs! A fusion of iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, chilies, and crispy noodles are blended with a light dressing made from plum sauce, honey, lemon, seasonings and spices… all topped with sesame seeds for a tangy, low calorie

meal that is seamless for summer.

A visit to Papapavlo’s is always a treat. With their classic Mediterranean menu items, specially prepared, it’s no wonder this location is a Stockton staple. The restaurant’s list of starters trigger taste buds, as each is perfectly proportioned to placate. Start off with the restaurant’s Olive and Cheese Plate, served with Tzatziki sauce, warm pita bread, French feta cheese, kasseri cheese and Kalamata olives. “This is a great starter for a glass of wine, says General Manager

Michael Bright, “The salted olives really get the taste buds going. For another super light starter, we recommend Papapavlo’s hummus plate. This dish blends together fresh Garbanzo beans, chopped garlic, Tahnini and lemon juice paired with pita for a simply delicious dip. “This accompanies well with fresh produce,” says Michael, “It’s refreshing on a hot day, and makes a great Mediterranean treat.”

CONNECT I TWEET I READ KEEPING THE CENTRAL VALLEY CONNECTED

WELCOMEAfter months spent planning, researching and designing, we are excited to debut San Joaquin Home & Garden, a publication by San Joaquin Magazine. This new venture is made possible through the ongoing uprise of our community, as the home market again takes foot and San Joaquin continues to welcome new businesses and established companies, contractors and designers expanding their reach from the Bay Area. As a leading lifestyle publication, we strive to share with our readers resources and talent that showcase the best San Joaquin has to offer- so it only made sense we expand our line of publications to cater to our community and its residents’ growth. There’s something special found in the process of transforming a house into a home. An unknown author said, “A house is built with boards and beams, and a home is built with love and dreams.” The creativity and seemingly endless possibilities of décor, design, architecture and structure is discovered when you open up, let go, and exercise the ability to truly create a mood, vibe and personality all your own. Your home is your safe haven, entertainment venue and center stage for many monumental memories. Whether you’re a home-body or a social butterfly- nothing beats kicking off your shoes in a space that calms, nurtures and inspires. In hopes to accompany you on your journey from house to home, we’ve connected with local businesses to bring an excellent source of information and

inspiration, in addition to quick tips, easy fixes, where to buy it and how to create it. Our pages are filled with the latest trends, color palettes, companies, designers and products to assist and ignite

in the creation of your dream home. Whether you’re considering building, remodeling, updating or redecorating- our compilation of top local resources, from carpet and cabinetry to solar power and air conditioning, has a little something for every home. Explore trending décor styles, consider hiring an interior designer, discover the power of proper lighting and

simple upgrades, enhance your outdoor area, introduce modern touches, suprise your child with a remodeled bedroom, and plant a garden... after all, home is where the heart is.

IT’S Easy BEIN’ GREEN

BY LINDSEY RODRIAN

Green Man Materials, a landscape materials supply store in Stockton, is the only local distributer of EasyTurf Synthetic Grass: a do-it-yourself fix for your yellowing yard. Say goodbye to brown patches, itchy grass, mowing and weeding as you enjoy the perfect solution: a truly trouble-free lawn that reduces your water bill and eliminates the worry that comes with our California drought. EasyTurf’s durability has even been NFL tested and approved, with 22 of 23 NFL teams playing or practicing on FieldTurf products. There are a host of reasons why EasyTurf’s grass is greener on its own side; one being superior drainage, thanks to the company’s proprietary MaxxFlow, offering rinse-clean drainage technology that outperforms most other synthetic turf backing options. Another is its 15 to 20 year life expectancy, the longest in the industry, with an eight year Manufacturer’s Warranty. This true-to-life product that looks and feels like a natural lawn is especially efficient in solving pet-associated problems, like dead spots from dog urine. Your pets are free to enjoy the turf as grass; just simply hose the turf and their waste will

easily wash through the thousands of holes designed to keep it clean. UltimateGrass, a line in the FieldTurf products, is even used nationwide by animal care facilities because of its durability and drainage. Stop by Green Man Materials for a complete EasyTurf Install Kit and one rewarding do-it-yourself project. The Grab and Go Kits feature 75 square feet of EasyTurf, sand to dress the top of the turf, anchor it down and fluff it up, and nails to secure the turf. The only additional product you’ll need is decomposed granite sand, also available at Green Man Materials, to use as a foundation before installing your new, perfect lawn. For those looking to take on a larger project, Green Man offers the kit and turf as large as 15 feet by 100 feet in five-foot increments. Check out their website for video links covering the turf’s self installation and care, and become inspired to create your very own beautifully green, trouble-free lawn.

CLEAN up on TILE 9

BY COPPER WILLIAMS

Tough stains don’t stand a chance when it comes to the perfectly lain porcelain tile that Trevizo Tile and Stone provide their customers! A product purchased through Bedrosians, Daltile and Marazzi, these porcelain pieces are the very best at ensuring that wear and tear is a passing thought. After all, porcelain tile is made to endure the intensity of high-traffic homes! When it comes to maintaining porcelain tile, Hugo at Trevizo knows just the way to keep it looking as good as new! He explains to us that, truth be told, it’s all about the grout when keeping floors well-groomed! “Your tile will never stain. It will always stay looking good with normal upkeep and soapy water.” he says, “But for grout joints- mix white vinegar with water- it’s a natural acid and will eat up any dirt or stain in your grout.” A solution of 50 percent water and 50 percent vinegar will do the trick for any tough to tackle grout stain, and use of a toothbrush will take the cleanliness of your grout to a new level. Anything that’s barely visible can be handled with a 10 percent vinegar solution, and a cloth to take on the stain! Looking at a stain that won’t come out? It’s an easy fix, Hugo explains. “Anytime the grout stain is not coming out, you can dig it out with a razor blade and re-grout.” Simple advice for maintaining an amazing tiled floor, sure to last for years to come!

PREPARETO Plant!

BY COPPER WILLIAMS

Winter is coming! No, really! Winter is on its way and we gardeners only have a few precious months left to get all we can out of our upcoming fall gardens! But before you begin planting those little seeds and sprouts into what remains of the summer soil, take a look at these quick tips we’ve

compiled to help ensure your garden grows!

Farewell to Weeds If your garden has been overrun by a mutant swarm of rampant weedzillas… Or you just couldn’t be bothered with picking out the pesky things during the summer heat, now is the time to do it! Weeds are a definite hazard to the well-being of each tiny seed you plant into the soil. So grab a cushion, plop

down and prepare to get plucking!

Just Dig ItPick up your pitchfork and dip those prongs deep into the dirt! Taking the time to loosen up the top layers of compact soil in your garden before planting will allow your crops to root comfortably. This will also allow water to soak into the fluffed-up surface instead of running off. Don’t let all that

water go to waste!

That Picky pHPlants won’t just grow in any old dirt plot you pop those seeds into! Test your soil’s pH levels by picking up a tester kit at your local nursery or garden center. Follow the instructions provided and find out exactly where your soil lands on the scale. If you’re lucky you’ll be in between 6 to 6.5! This is generally the ideal pH for your vegetables to mature and produce high yields!

Compost It UpNothing shows your plants love better than prepping your soil with nutrients! After you’ve done some light tilling, layer your planting surface with one to three inches of compost, and mix that lovely food into your plants’ future home to keep them well fed throughout the season! The more your crops

have to eat the more you will, too!

Watch that WaterKeep a close eye on your garden to make sure it’s getting just the right amount of water necessary to keep it happy and healthy! On average, a garden will need an inch a week. If your poor plants are beginning to droop under the sun and turn extra crispy, it’s likely they could use a few more gulps than what you’re providing! Have you been giving your budding beauties too much? Check the leaves to see if they’re extra soft and limp to the touch. If so, you

need to cut back!

Plant these Seeds in Your Garden this August & SeptemberAUGUST: Beets • Cabbage • Carrots • Cauliflower • Celery • Head Lettuce • Onion Seeds • Rutabaga • White Potatoes

SEPTEMBER: Turnips • Carrots • Beets • Collards • Garlic • Leeks • Radish Shallots

ASKthe ExpertsQ. Do I need two air conditioning systems

if I’m living in a two-story home?  If not, what’s my best option for optimum cooling?

A. Silvia Almazan, Manager of Lovotti Inc., says not necessarily. “It is best to have two systems in a two

story home for optimum cooling, but there is not always room for that additional system, and the cost might not be feasible. Another option for optimum cooling in a two story home with an existing single system would be to install a two zone system by Zone First. We can separate the upstairs and down stairs ductwork with zoning dampers and add the Zone First zone board. We install two Venstar seven-day programmable thermostats; one upstairs and one downstairs to ensure optimum comfort control in all locations of the home.” She adds that some central heating and air conditioning systems might not be capable of this installation (zoning), so if your system is more then 15 years old, Silvia and the experts at Lovotti Inc. recommend a new central heating and air conditioning system. “Right now PG&E has rebates of up to $6,500 for Energy Upgrades. Please give us a call at (209) 931-2100 for a free comfort analysis.”

Q. If you love the look of natural stone, but the option is outside of your budget, what’s the next best thing?

A. Sergio Morales, Manager with Big Bob’s Flooring of Stockton, says that a great

alternative to natural stone is Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring. “It has the look of a wood floor,” he adds, “The vinyl is water friendly and very resistant. It is also very popular,” adds Sergio. As an innovative and popular material, this type of flooring has a great look for a fraction of the cost.

Q. What’s the scoop on your solar powered gate systems?

A. Dana Buck, General Manager with Alamo Alarm Company, explains that

the business which focuses on high definition camera and custom alarm systems, also offers

solar powered gate systems for rural homes and environments. “The solar powered gates are

really slick for those who have a ranch, winery or a place in the country where they don’t have power

at the gate location, but they want to be able to control traffic coming in and out of the property. The gate systems

run exclusively on solar, which charges the battery, including a keypad and/or wireless remotes which can be used to open and close the gate. These solar powered gates are self-contained and don’t need a track, therefore they can even be installed on a dirt or gravel driveway, which may not be a smooth or level surface.”

Q. What’s trending for kitchen countertop material?

A. When it comes to choosing countertops for your

kitchen, Paradise Designs owner Larry Diggs says that materials such as Granite or Quartz remain popular for their “constant durability, beauty and variety of colors.” These surfaces work well in environments with heavy pots, pans and metal items, while also withstanding heat well. “Countertop materials have converted from darker colors like browns, to lighter colors like whites and greys which are trending,” adds Larry. “Also trending are relaxed, square edges instead of complete round, bull-nosed edging.”

Q. What types of cabinets are popular for today’s kitchen remodel project?

A. Because every client and every kitchen is unique, Classic Design Floor to

Ceiling offers both custom and pre-fabricated cabinets in both framed and frameless design. “We partner with the best manufacturers in the industry: Decora, Kemper, and Belmont and offer only plywood (as opposed to particle board) construction,” says Tiffany Gomes. “In this way, we can design a kitchen (or any other

room) for every budget and lifestyle that will be built to last.” Although custom cabinets sound

like they would offer the most choices, Tiffany says the opposite is actually true. “Manufactured

cabinets come in a huge variety of door styles, wood species, finishes and stains thereby providing unlimited

design options.” Sample doors are available so you can see exactly what you are getting and the factory furniture finish can’t be replicated by any other means. “However, sometimes our clients may want to match existing cabinets,” she says, “and that’s where the custom option comes in.” The most popular features today include soft-close drawers and doors, full-extension adjustable roll-out trays, recycle centers, and lazy Susan’s to take advantage of hard-to-reach corner cabinets.

Q. What carpet is best for withstanding the abuse of pets and kids?

A. Erik Pequeno, Manager with Knights Carpet

Flooring, says “Each company has their own stain fighting technology such as Shaw’s R2X or Mohawk’s Stain Master. However, it is not all about the carpet, but also, what is underneath it. You need a moisture barrier pad. You can have the best stain fighting technology around, but if you don’t have a moisture barrier pad, it’s pointless.” He explains that without a pad underneath your carpet, the stains can pop back up after a cleaning. In addition, to help fight stains from kids and pets, both Erik and carpet manufacturers recommend having your carpet professionally cleaned every 12-24 months.

We sat down with Stockton’s very own award-winning, Certified Interior Designer and General Contractor, Kathleen Jennison, to talk all things modern. “Modern refers to a design style created between 1920 and 1950, by iconic designers like Eames, Saarinen, Jacobsen, Aalto and Breuer,” Kathleen explains. “Modern pieces are sleek and minimal, often incorporating molded plastic, metal and wood. Modern spaces are open and airy with a neutral color palette or pops of color,” she says. Kathleen’s personal and preferred style, referred to as “Cozy Modern,” is reviving homes of San Joaquin, as she creates nothing short of a masterpiece

for many homeowners loving and longing for this look. “An all-modern space can feel cold and impersonal to some,” says Kathleen. For those interested in an updated look that doesn’t dominate the entire space, consider adding “modern moments,” like pairing a clean-lined Billy Baldwin style sofa with a crystal chandelier, or change up all-white walls (a standard in modern rooms) with a classic color like robin’s egg blue. Adding a modern sofa, end table or statement piece to an otherwise traditional room will result in a contemporary feel. Light Up Your Life

Proper lighting brings personality, depth and dimension to your home. Whether you are investing in a complete home makeover, or looking for an instant re-vamp with the addition of new light fixtures, let your creativity flow as you light up your life, and home, with beautiful statement pieces. We sat down with Carrie Arnold of Phillips Lighting & Home in Modesto, to talk about just how powerful your lamps and lighting can be, what to consider and the best styles for your space.LAYER YOUR LIGHTING. There is no one fixture that will give you all you need to light a room effectively. Use a few types of lighting to create an inviting and functional space. Incorporate the four lighting functions: Task

lighting, ambient lighting, accent lighting, and decorative lighting.THINK IT THROUGH. Take a look at some of the inspirational photos you’ve gathered for your building or redecorating project. Focus in on the lighting. What feels good to you? How do you create focal points? How will it function at night when it’s dark? What’s important in the room? DON’T BE BORING! There are so many cool, glamorous, modern, traditional, edgy, colorful, quiet and exciting fixtures available. You’d be surprised at how much personality and style they will add to your home.GET READY TO LEARN SOMETHING NEW. Lighting is going through a huge technological shift currently. Now that LED lighting technology is

Light Up Your Life

maturing, it’s finally time to hop on board. Take a look at all of the amazing new fixtures available that will give you great lighting and save you a ton in energy costs.DON’T FORGET TO CONSIDER YOUR DIMMERS AND SWITCHES. We’ve been using the same old switches and dimmers for years by default. Take some time to look at the newer lighting controls available. They can really bring your home up to date, both visually and functionally. Whether low tech switches and dimmers or wireless controls controlled by an app on your phone, take a look at the Adorne collection by Legrand. They’re really making a big splash in this area.

KEEP IT COOL. In the hot Central Valley we can’t escape the ceiling fan. Make sure to love not only the design and finish, but check the efficiency rating; how much energy it uses and how many CFM’s (cubic feet per minute of air movement) it produces. A fan appropriate for a small bedroom may not be sufficient for a high-ceilinged great room. Use an exterior fan on the patio to create a breeze and keep flies at bay.

Rich Remington, engineer and owner of Stockton’s family owned and operated BTA Solar, says installing solar panels can supplement or eliminate electric costs for decades to come. As a clean and abundant source form of energy, solar power uses the sun’s energy to produce electricity, ridding you of staggering utility bills, or oil prices. Other than environmental factors, the benefits of solar power include; reliable power, protection from increased electrical bills, and no monthly utility bills. Sounds great, right? Here’s what you need to consider before starting your solar project. To start receiving the many benefits of solar power, Rich urges San Joaquinians to do their research and get an accurate picture of the market to find the best option for your home or business, even agricultural industries. “Based on today’s market, return on investment has never been better with the price of solar

coming down the last several years and the increase cost of utility rates.” The solar market continues to change, but those who invest now may see the most benefits before rates and regulations increase in 2016. As Rich explains, the current 30 percent federal tax rate allows full retail credit – but laws are going to change soon. “Eventually it may not be as beneficial as it is today,” he adds that beginning your project sooner rather than later means being “grandfathered into something that’s very beneficial.” Anyone with a utility bill can qualify, but those who own their home may see the most benefits, as solar projects are substantial investments. Depending on the size of your project and household energy consumption, costs range from $10,000 to $20,000. However, solar projects are ventures that pay for themselves beyond the initial installation fees. For example, Rich, who installed his own solar

89 SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE | HOME & GARDEN | FALL 2015

Page 92: San Joaquin Magazine August 2015

90 SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE | AUGUST 2015

panels on his home several years ago, describes paying nearly $600 per month in utility fees before going solar. “That’s $6,000-$7,000 per year.” After a decade, Rich has continued to save nearly $100,000 in energy fees while also paying off his original investment. “It’s a real WOW Factor.” While the cost of such a project is no cheap endeavor, there are plenty of options to finance your solar development. “The financing community is very focused on the solar market right now, offering very flexible terms and competitive rates. BTA Solar can finance as long as 20 years if cash flow is there,” he adds, “We work with local financial institutions to offer zero down, easy financing. It is very simple to qualify in today’s market.” Though several companies offer leasing options for solar equipment, owning your own system is preferable, explains Rich. “You are protecting yourself from future energy increases. If you own the system, eventually you will have free power once you’ve paid it off.” Simple payback can take anywhere from three to seven years on average, depending on rate schedules. The size of your project will determine how much you will save, and takes an average of two to four weeks to complete. Decide whether you aim to cut costs, or rid your energy bill all together. The company has the capability to complete projects from one kilowatt to multi-megawatts, from small to large scale projects ranging from residential to agricultural and commercial. Whether you are in the market for solar panel modules mounted on the ground or roof, the team at BTA Solar will engineer a system that works best for you and your needs with the most cutting edge and engineer-driven service. “We are a one-stop shop with a wide range of warranties and affordable leasing options at competitive prices,” says Rich. The company offers a 25 year warranty (including

labor fees) so their customers save on upkeep fees. BTA is engaged at the forefront of the industry and works with state of the art technology and materials, says Remington who serves customers all over the Central Valley, Bay area and Mountain communities. Customers can maximize their return on their investment with the company’s innovative technology that collects the maximum amount of sunlight, and keeping up to date with the newest advancements. They are confident in our reliable service.” Not only can BTA Solar

build a cost efficient power supply that does not generate any pollutants, they can help you take advantage of tax incentives. Whether you have a ranch, business, or are looking for an alternative energy solution for your home, BTA Solar can help you make the most of your solar power by creating an efficient and independent system that’s affordable.

Tips to Make Your Home Look Like You Hired an Interior Designer

BY KATHLEEN JENNISON

Hiring an Interior Designer is a big deal and a big investment, but just in case you can’t hire an interior designer, here are room-by-room tips to make it look like you hired an interior designer. You can easily do this by implementing one of these tips, or all of them.

YOU HIRED AN INTERIOR DESIGNER FOR YOUR ENTRYWallpaper is making a big comeback and the perfect room to get your feet wet with wallpaper is the foyer. Adding intensely patterned wallpaper to the entry walls is

surprisingly unifying and makes a dramatic entrance. Large scale geometric patterns add life to a modern style, while a floral pattern feels elegant. Add a floral pattern in a monochromatic color palette and you can easily take an entry from “eh” to “oh” with only a bolt of wallpaper.

YOU HIRED AN INTERIORDESIGNER FOR YOUR LIVING ROOMArea rugs can be a source of inspiration in your entire living room design. Many designers start their design from the floor and work their way up. By starting with

the area rug, you can pull colors for paint, furniture, and accessories making the whole room feel pulled together and purposeful.

YOU HIRED AN INTERIORDESIGNER FOR YOUR DINING ROOMWith many newer home designs offering an open kitchen, it’s sometimes difficult to define the different spaces in one large multi-purpose room. Consider an overscaled light fixture over the dining space paired with an oversized chunky wood dining table. Match the overscaled light fixture and chunky wood table with translucent chairs to lighten the mood and shake it up a bit.

92 SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE | HOME & GARDEN | FALL 2015

Page 95: San Joaquin Magazine August 2015

YOU HIRED AN INTERIOR DESIGNER FOR YOUR KITCHENNext to the kitchen cabinets, the appliances will be the next largest expense in a kitchen remodel, but remember kitchen appliances don’t have to always be stainless steel. White or colored ones can add airiness to an otherwise dreary or small kitchen.

YOU HIRED AN INTERIOR DESIGNER FOR YOUR BEDROOMBifold closet doors (or worst yet, bypass mirrored closet doors) can be replaced with bold curtains. Hang them hotel style (floor to ceiling) with rods and rings under an upholstered “header.” Match the curtains to your wall color for a chic vibe.

and DESIGN Designing and investing in a child’s room is often difficult, reoccurring and pricey, as your five-year-old daughter outgrows her pink canopy and princess-themed furniture. Of course, as parents, we want our children to have the bedroom of their dreams, whether it includes a racecar bed, Disney characters galore or hot pink sparkles. However, Kathleen Jennison, an award-winning and Certified Interior Designerand Contractor out of Stockton, says to steer away from investing in a completely themed room, and instead “incorporate things that are relevant in their lives and stimulate imagination.” Are they a musician, dancer or athlete? “Incorporate elements of those themes, but keep it subtle,” she says. Ultimately, creating a safe, functional space your child truly enjoys encourages healthy sleeping habits, cleanliness, organization and respect

95 SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE | HOME & GARDEN | FALL 2015

Page 98: San Joaquin Magazine August 2015

for their belongings, while lessening the chance of “clean-up time” arguments. So, what’s the solution for your kid’s room and their changing needs? From a design perspective, Kathleen says there are three important things to consider: Look for furniture that will stand the test of time, like a sturdy writing desk that can first act as a changing table; use plenty of lighting including overheads, table and desk lamps; don’t be afraid of a sophisticated color palette for children. California Closets offers an array of design options and storage spaces for every age and every stage, designed to grow with your children. As we parents know, change is the name of the game- our kid’s interests, hobbies and style evolves and California Closets cater to that evolution, with installations designed to adapt from toy and book storage to study spaces and clothing organization. As a new parent, your baby’s room revolves around a need for storage of diapers, wipes, creams, bottles, pacifiers and all that comes with your little bundle of joy. Surely, you dedicated months to preparing the nursery, and nesting during pregnancy. Kathleen Jennison suggests, “investing in a crib that is

both aesthetically pleasing and functional. Furniture for Stokke has many pieces that are convertible,” she continues, “If you are set on pink for girls and blue for boys, consider enhancing colors with fuchsia and orange to take a little girl into her tweens, or use navy blue and green with a nautical theme for a baby boy to take him into young manhood.” As your child grows, that same room will need to adapt to their toddler needs, with a safe play space, drawers for toys and an area for art projects. Toddlers turned adolescents and teenagers, need a space to call their own as they grow into their skin, change their style, complete schoolwork and embrace their passions and hobbies accompanied by clothes, accessories, products and memorabilia galore. “Organization is crucial to eliminate any clutter,” Kathleen adds. California Closets explains that the right storage solution can seamlessly accommodate all changes and more with just a few simple adjustments as your kids grow. These adjustments include rods and poles that allow for a closet to evolve, as baby clothes become toddler, grade-schooler and teenage attire. Shelving systems that work with or without drawers give flexibility as your child matures, and the addition of doors to a storage area can encourage organization and give an older child personal space. A play area designed to eventually incorporate a

desk means you have the freedom to change the room without having to change the structure of the storage system. In addition, California Closets offers many color finishes and accents to highlight your child’s personality. Lago Italian inspired finishes offer a unique grain texture and elegant colors with the quality of real wood veneer. Accessories, in conjunction with the storage space, make a small room more functional with options of pull out baskets, hampers, bins and more. In addition, Kathleen suggests a sleeping loft to free up valuable floor space, or installation of a cork wall that functions as a rotating art gallery. By utilizing California Closets, an interior designer, and their tips, you can invest faithfully and thoughtfully, knowing your children’s room will remain their special, personal space as they grow and change.

FALLColorsTOUR

MAINE and CANADA’S EASTERN PROVINCESALWAYS MORE TO EXPLORE

For nearly twenty years we’ve talked about doing a fall colors tour to New England, placed it on our bucket list and for a variety of reasons just kept postponing. Finally, this past fall season, we got our act together and opted for a late September adventure. Although fall color tours are offered by numerous luxury bus firms we opted for renting a car and doing it on our

own. And that was a great decision.

We started the trip by flying into Boston, renting a carand immediately heading north. Here’s

our recommended itinerary....

Kennebunkport and Portland, Maine: Boston directly to Portland can be a short two-hour drive but we recommend you take an extra couple of hours and head to the coast to visit Kennebunkport. This very quaint and famous ocean front town is easy to walk and known for the coastal estate home of former President George Bush and first lady Barbara. Although not open to the public the Bush compound is worth a few minutes drive to view their gorgeous seaside setting. As you next head to Maine’s biggest city of Portland we recommend staying in nearby Cape Elizabeth where checking into the gorgeous Inn by the Sea is a no brainer. This lovely resort boutique-like property offers a state-of-the-art spa, beautiful accommodations, and an ocean front setting offering wonderful beach walks. Their Sea Glass restaurant, serving up sustainable seafood in creative presentations, was a culinary highlight of the trip, InnbytheSea.com. And don’t miss seeing the famous Portland Headlight, one of our country’s most photographed lighthouses, and taking a city of Portland trolley tour and a harbor cruise on the picturesque Casco Bay, PortlandDiscovery.com. Another choice dining pick is Walters, a local foodie favorite, WaltersPortland.com For tons of info on Maine’s premier city visit: VisitPortland.com

Pineland Farms, Maine: After leaving Portland head about a half hour northwest to one of the state›s most beautiful settings at Pineland Farms where the fall colors were incredible. This former campus has been converted into a unique travel destination, plus an exceptional meeting and recreational venue. Pineland’s

distinctive development is one of those unique locations for family getaways, romantic escapes, small group meetings, and reunions. Special features include: historic home choices for lodging; jogging/cross country skiing/snowshoeing/sledding/mountain biking trails; tennis courts; country market/deli; orienteering; and more. Educational visits to their creamery, home to award winning cheeses, and their world class Equestrian Center, specializing in Olympic dressage training, are other hallmarks. For much more information on Pineland visit: PineLandFarms.org And to find countless additional things to see and do in this colorful state: VisitMaine.com

Maine Coast on the way toNew Brunswick Province, Canada After leaving Pineland head due east back to Maine’s dramatic coast, in constant contact with a multitude of fall colorizations, and be sure to stop and stroll the quaint seaside towns of Camden and Rockport. Drive on to Bar Harbor and don’t miss a hike into Acadia National Park for more fall color splendor. Next drive on to the Canadian border of New Brunswick Province at Lubec and take the International Bridge over to Campobello Island. This historic island is home to the Roosevelt Campobello International Park, the only park in the world equally funded and operated by two countries and site of the former vacation estate of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt. Be sure to sign up well in advance for the complimentary ‘Tea with Eleanor’ that provided us many interesting

insights into some of the unpublicized circumstances of this famous first family’s personal lives, Fdr.net. Your next destination should be the very delightful coastal town of St. Andrews-by-the-Sea where we hunkered down at the famous Algonquin Resort that lived up to it’s world class reputation. And enjoy strolling the nearby award winning Kingsbrae Garden and downtown’s colorful Water Street, AlgonquinResort.com. Grand Manan Island by ferry from Black’s Harbor, is one of the Maritime Province’s favorite vacation spots and our recommended succeeding layover when leaving St. Andrews and heading further north on the beautiful New Brunswick coast. Try booking a room with Inn at Whale Cove Cottages where the chef/owner is well known for her gastronomic creations. Hiking the coastline in and around the island’s lighthouses is our number one recommended outing on Manan. WhaleCoveCottages.ca. Your next destination should be Saint John, Canada’s oldest incorporated city and a vibrant walkable downtown on the edge of the Bay of Fundy, home to the world’s highest and lowest tides. Our stay at the

local Hilton Saint John was a great choice and their bellman’s recommendation to go to Rocky’s Sports Bar so we could catch the television broadcast of our favorite pro sports team proved memorable. A customer at Rocky’s and a brand new acquaintance, who learned we were celebrating our wedding anniversary, put on a surprise party for us at Rocky’s that will forever be remembered and appreciated. RockysSportsBar.com. Following Saint John you must visit the upper Bay of Fundy via Fundy National Park, the lobster fishing village of Alma and the famous Hopewell Rocks. Hiking in the park and down into the Rocks area, where at low tide you can walk on the ocean floor was an iconic New Brunswick experience unlike any we’ve ever had. Nova Scotia Province: After leaving New Brunswick we headed for a short two day visit to explore this other Maritime Canadian Province. On the drive to the capital city of Halifax overlooking the Atlantic Ocean we had wonderful stops at the Shubenacadie Provincial Wildlife Park, an amazing sanctuary, and the Anne Murray Centre museum in Springhill to learn more about one of our all-time favorite singers. While

in Halifax we stayed at the classic boutique style Halliburton House Inn with delightful complimentary breakfasts and an ideal location to walk the downtown and the wharf area. And be sure to stroll the Public Gardens and then on to Citadel park for great city views below. And don’t miss taking the time to drive about an hour to the quaint fishing village of Lunenburg just to visualize one of the most colorful groups of painted houses anywhere. On the way to the next Province of Prince Edward Island try to take the time to go to Nova Scotia’s west coast to see more views of the Bay of Fundy and charming seaside towns. For more tempting things to see and do in this wonderful province: Novascotia.com

Prince Edward Island: Also known as PEI, this Maritime Province is reached by heading back to Port Elgin in New Brunswick and taking the Confederation Bridge to reach the island. This curved 8 mile long bridge is the longest in the world crossing ice-covered water in winter seasons and endures as one of Canada’s preeminent engineering achievements of the 20th century. You’ll definitely need to start your visit at the capital city of Charlottetown. If you can book a room at the Great George Hotel

you’ll love the choice as it’s close to the walk able downtown and provides first rate accommodations, complimentary breakfast buffets, fresh yummy afternoon cookies and evening drinks. Award winning Terre Rouge Bistro Marche on Queen Street provided an excellent dining choice. Be sure to visit nearby PEI National Park, the beautiful coastal beaches, Green Gables Heritage Place, the Farmer’s Market, the Dunes Gallery & Gardens, and time permitting drop in for lunch at the very popular PEI Preserve Company-much more than a preserves business. Heritage Place is the home that inspired the famous book-Anne of Green Gables. PEI is one of the favorite getaways for Canadian citizens and is becoming more popular with stateside folks, as well. For much more information and to watch a beautiful 10 minute video tour of this glorious island go to: TourismPei.com.

Two last tips:1. Try to allow at least two weeks for this trip to fully experience all there is to offer in spectacular Fall colors and Atlantic coastal splendors.2. Be sure to dine often on the Maine and Canadian coastal lobsters, considered by many as the best in the world. Some folks have strong convictions as to which of the two are best. Not us. We loved them both equally.

(Publisher’s Note: Our travel team next month will bring readers their recommendations on visiting our country’s seventh largest city of San Antonio and a few surprises they learned about the famous River Walk and The Alamo)

Finding THE RIGHT Contractor

FOR YOU BY TIFFANY GOMES

You’ve saved and planned for your upcoming remodel project, possibly for years. You’ve clipped photos from home décor magazines and printed from Houzz. Perhaps you’ve even browsed local showrooms. But, the most important decision you’ll make is hiring the right contractor. So, how do you choose? First and foremost, decide if you are going to hire a General Contractor or if you are going to be “The General.” This is often the

critical mistake most homeowners make while trying to save money. Understand that a good General does so much more than schedule the subcontractors. Your General is responsible for permits, cohesive design, cost containment, warranties, and most importantly, dealing with all of the unforeseen issues that arise when dealing with overlapping trades. Whose fault is it that the tile backsplash looks bad? It could be the tile installer, the tile manufacturer, the framer, or possibly the sheetrock installer. Unless you have worked in construction, it is highly inadvisable to scrimp on hiring a qualified General. Once you’ve decided to hire a professional GC, it’s time to do your homework. Word of mouth is a great place to start. Then, go to Cslb.ca.gov to verify licensing under “Instant License Check.” Look for a current and active B-class license. In addition, this site will show you

Bonding and Worker’s Compensation details. After you are satisfied with licensing, it’s time for an interview, where you will ask for references, testimonials, awards and photos of previous jobs. Find out if the contractor has General Liability Insurance. Ask for letters of credit from vendors, subcontractors or banks. Did you know that if your General Contractor doesn’t pay the subcontractors, those subcontractors can place a lien on your home, even if you’ve paid your bill in full? Shaky credit is an absolute red flag. During the interview, you should also find out how the design process will work. Will the contractor provide any design help or resources for materials? Or, will he or she simply send you to different supply houses for each product and promise you a “contractor’s discount?” If you’ve found a contractor you are happy with, yet the design portion is left out, factor in an additional cost for retaining the services of a qualified designer who will show you products from various manufacturers while ensuring a cohesive design. Finally, be sure your chosen General Contractor provides you with a professional, written contract that includes fixed costs as well as estimated start and finish dates. And if you aren’t given detailed information about what to expect during the entire process, it’s up to you to ask. A remodeling project isn’t easy; but with a great General Contractor, the gain will be well worth it.

The modern restaurant, chic atmosphere and intimate patio offers San Joaquin diners Southern European cuisine inspired by local favorites. The eatery opened its door to the community on June 30, 2010 as a neighborhood bistro, says Melissa Goodman, General Manager. Since, Mezzo has become a local staple in the dining scene, offering an ever-evolving menu that grows with the seasons. “The menu changes every three months,” adds Melissa, with freshly sourced, Central Valley produce. The staff at Mezzo prides themselves on exclusively handcrafted food and drink menus that come complete with house-made sauces like bolognese, pastas, focaccia and soups made with authentic ingredients.

Un-Matched Mediterranean BY MELISSA HUTSELL | PHOTOGRAPHY DAN HOOD

Take your taste buds on an adventure out of San Joaquin and into the Mediterranean, where passion and heritage is tasted in each bite. At Stockton’s Mezzo Italian Bistro, that’s exactly what you’ll find – a vacation from your average entrees, so full of flavor it transcends the Central Valley.

In addition to extensive meat, seafood and salad options, Mezzo offers vegan, vegetarian and gluten free choices, “we are really flexible,” describes Melissa, who says practically any items can be made to cater to dietary preferences – even the pastas and proteins, which can be substituted for a variety of healthy alternatives including Quinoa and Farro, or fruits and vegetables. Chef Buddy O’Dell, a San Joaquin native and food extraordinaire, takes a spin on ‘normal dishes,’ adding his own eclectic mix of the Mediterranean with Middle-Eastern influences, “You can’t find anything else like it in town.” With his own fusion of herbs, nuts, grains and dried fruit, O’Dell is changing the game and his own recipes to reflect seasonal offerings, all of which add to the restaurant’s commitment to sustainability. Staying true to the Mediterranean-Italian cuisine, Chef O’Dell’s simple yet sophisticated recipes not only inspire the foodie in all of us, but also ignite memories. “The food brings you back to a time and place,” explains Melissa, who describes a moment in the

Eggs Benedict and French Toast with a blueberry compote, pan fried and topped with a black pepper cinnamon whipped cream. Top off your late-morning meal with a house-made Sangria, Bloody Mary, or Mimosa among many more options. On the lighter side, the restaurant offers Tapas Tuesday, featuring small plates and cuisine from around the world. The remarkable dishes aren’t the only works of art gracing the bistro. While the restaurant’s approach to cultural cuisine and sustainability is impressive enough to draw even the pickiest eaters in, the Mezzo experience is topped off with a gallery of local artwork that changes every four to six months, showcasing the many talents of San Joaquin. Every other Friday, customers can catch a relaxing, romantic evening Jazz ensemble on the patio, courtesy of Lincoln High. The art, music and food all come together for the unmatched authenticity and a relaxing environment that embraces the Italian way of life – great food and family. So, indulge all your senses with this all-around experience.

restaurant when a woman began to shed tears while enjoying her meal. The authenticity of the recipe had triggered memories of her grandmother’s cooking. For this reason and so much more, the Mezzo menu is only part of the experience at this community-based bistro. The restaurant is set apart from others in the region because of “the food, the atmosphere and the people,” describes Melissa, whose staff builds relationships that become part of their customer’s lives, and a part of the community they serve. “They come for the food but come back for the relationships they build with staff and other customers.” Mezzo’s menu is perfectly complimented with its fantastic wine list, which features San Joaquin wineries such as Klinker Brick, Mettler, Bokisch, McManis and Lange Twins. Also found on the wine list are imported favorites that reflect the themed Italian cuisine. The restaurant goes above and beyond to offer entirely handcrafted cocktails, using no pre-made mixtures, only hand-squeezed juice for the ultimate refreshment to be enjoyed inside or outdoors. This year, Mezzo celebrates its fifth year with the introduction of the bistro’s Sunday brunch. With classics like pancakes and eggs, the elegant brunch features mouthwatering options such as

SUMMER SIPPERSHere in Lodi Wine Country, summer is at its peak and the temperature is hot, hot, hot! Fortunately for us, our region just happens to be situated directly east of the San Francisco Bay, at the edge of the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta, whose famous “delta breezes” provide a much-needed cool down effect in the early evening. It is this perfect climate of warm days and cool evenings that allows our winegrowers to consistently produce wine grapes full of flavor, yet balanced by a refreshing acidity. While you’re waiting for those day-to-day delta breezes to blow through this month, here are our picks for three invigorating white wines to keep you “cool by the pool.” (Bonus: All three wines are sporting screw cap closures, making them that much more accessible, and we threw in a wine pourer as well because, why not!)

LANGETWINS FAMILY WINERY 2014 LODI SAUVIGNON BLANCRefreshing on a warm summer day, this lovely Sauvignon Blanc satisfies with brisk Meyer lemon flavors intertwined with tropical melon. This sunshiny wine is the perfect complement to fresh seafood ceviche, grilled calamari or a scoop of lemon sorbet. ($15) LangeTwins.com

FIELDS FAMILY WINERY 2014 LODI WHITE CUVÉEPredominantly Viognier (vee-oh-NYAY) with a splash of Verdelho, this exhilarating white wine is aromatic and flowery with inviting aromas of ripe pear and ginger spice. Lively acidity makes this summery wine ideal for cold Thai noodle salad, Ahi poke, or creamy goat cheese. ($18) FieldsFamilyWines.com

IRONSTONE VINEYARDS2013 LODI PINOT GRIGIO Crisp, fresh and uncomplicated, this floral Pinot Grigio is bursting with red and green apples, delicate peaches, and hints of lush lemon. Sip this beautiful wine alongside fresh greens tossed with avocado, watermelon and grilled sea scallops, or flatbread pizza with basil

pesto. ($10) IronStoneVineyards.com

HOST™ CHILL COOLING POUR SPOUTThe perfect companion to your summer sipper, the CHILL cooling pour spout will ensure that your wine stays cool and vibrant. ($20) TrueFabrications.com

Wine Tours & TastingsThe Lodi winemaking industry has enjoyed tremendous expansion in the last decade. The land devoted to vineyards has increased from 46,000 acres in 1996 to nearly 100,000 today. Now, the region produces more fine wine than Napa and Sonoma combined! The Lodi Appellation is proudly blowing away the mists of anonymity that have shrouded local wines, allowing them to bask in the sunshine of worldwide recognition. We invite you to take a short ride and discover

ZUCCHINIBY MELISSA HUTSELL

Zucchinis are the jewels of summertime squash; found gracing the stands at Farmers Markets throughout the season in many different shapes, sizes and colors. These flourishing fruits come aplenty during the warmer months, and make for colorful culinary creations. Like most squash, zucchinis find their origin in the Americas. Ar-chaeologists have traced the plants back to 7000 – 5500 BC in Mex-ico, where ancient diets were mainly comprised of maize (corn), beans and squash. The plants later made their way to Northern America and Europe after explorers brought back many of the new vegetation they found along their trips. Today, zucchini and squash are grown and eaten abundantly all over the world as a staple seasonal favorite. In addition to being tasty additions to both sweet and savory dishes, zucchinis are packed with nutritious value. Low in calories, they are rich in minerals and vitamins such as folate, phytonutrients, and potas-sium. The fruits are a great source of Vitamin C and Manganese which help our bodies fight against free radicals that can damage our cells and DNA. In addition, Vitamin C aids the communication between nerve cells, and assists in metabolizing cholesterol. Phytonutrients such as Zeaxanthin and Lutein are also found in these rich fruits. The nutrients are a great source of Vitamin A, and help to promote healthy eyesight. Zucchinis are known as one of the world’s healthiest foods for good reason. It is no wonder that Americans are encouraged to include more in their diets, and with these delicious recipes….that won’t be a problem!

ZUCCHINIBLOSSOMSPREPARAZIONE (Squash blossoms stuffed with burrata cheese and dried tomatoes.) INGREDIENTS:

8 Zucchini flowers • 4 dried tomatoes2 oz Burrata cheese • Salt to taste • Vegetable oil (for frying) FOR THE BATTER:

1 cup cold Sparkling water • 4 ice cubes • 1 egg yolkSalt to taste • 3¼ oz flour (and more for flouring)

PREPARATION:

Carefully wash the flowers by immersing them in a bowl with cold wa-ter. Then transfer them on a kitchen towel to dry and drain them. When they are dry, remove the growths keeping the lower bowl. With a knife remove the stem (you can leave it if you prefer) and gently open the flower to identify the pistil inside. Remove the pistil by hand by each flower. Cut

FLANZUCCHINI(for 10 servings) INGREDIENTS:10 oz zucchini julienned • 2 eggs (separate yolk from whites) 3 oz freshly grated parmesan • 3 oz heavy cream 4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil • 1 clove garlic Salt and pepper to taste FOR FONDUE:

8 oz of brie • 4 oz heavy cream 1 teaspoon of potato starch • Nutmeg Salt and pepper to taste PREPARATION FOR FLAN ZUCCHINI:

In a pan, let brown the clove of garlic with the olive oil for one minute, pour the julienne of zucchini and cook until zucchini are golden brown. In a bowl mix the egg yolks, cream, Parmesan cheese and salt. Add zucchini. Mix everything and finally add the egg whites that have previously mounted until stiff; stir gently from bottom to

the dried tomatoes in half (if you use those in oil, drain and dry them with paper towels to remove excess oil before using them in the preparation). Slice burrata that you will use for the filling. Stuff the zuc-chini flowers: open them gently and insert a slice of burrata and dried tomato divided in half. Then take the leaves gen-tly with your fingers to close the flowers.Twist the leaves gently, wrapping them around themselves so the filling will not spill. Set aside your stuffed zucchini flowers. Meanwhile, prepare the batter: In a bowl, mix in the egg yolk and add the flour, then pour cold sparkling water. Finally add the ice cubes to the cold water (it will help tie in a more rapidly the flour). Mix the ingredients well with a whisk to obtain a pretty liquid, lump-free batter. Before using the batter make sure that you have created bubbles on the surface. In a large pot heat the oil until it is 300-350°, while in a bowl put enough flour to dip the zucchini flowers. Then pass them in the flour dip them one by one in the batter and before placing them in the oil drain them of the batter in excess. Dip the flowers in the pot with the oil at 170-180° 1 or 2 at a time so as not to excessively lower the oil temperature; fry for a few minutes until they are golden and crispy; then remove them with a slotted spoon when they are golden. Transfer them on a tray covered with paper towels, season with salt to taste and serve very hot!

top to prevent the mixture will deflate. Butter muffin cups and fill them up to leave about ½ inch from the edges. Cook your zucchini flan in a water bath in the oven at 350 degrees for about 40 minutes. PREPERATION FORFOUNDUE BRIE:

First, cut the outside the Brie cheese, then cut cheese into small pieces and place in a saucepan with a teaspoon of potato starch. Stir and let stand for about 10 minutes. Now put the pan on low heat and add the cream, stir-ring constantly. When the fon-due has reached the right con-sistency, remove from heat and season with salt, and finally add a pinch of nutmeg and pepper. Serve your zucchini flan with some sliced tomatoes seasoned with salt, extra virgin olive oil and fresh basil (preferably of green tomatoes, cakes,) while in “top” with brie fondue.
