October will bring all in-house activities. After the Flying Geese workshop with our own Sue Rasmussen on Sunday, October 13, our Monday October 14 evening’s program will be a Community “Sew”cial. With the help of the Veterans project and Quilters for Others, we will cut fabric hearts for pillows. If you took home the heart pattern at the September meeting and have the hearts sewn, bring them to the meeting and we’ll have the stuffing to finish them.
Bring your scissors and any fabric at is approxi-mately 14" square. Using the heart pattern available at the meeting, you can trace and cut! There will also be quilt tops from Quilters for Others that need to be tied. Never tied a quilt before? Now’s your chance to try something new. They will provide the batting and back-ing. We provide the willing hands. Please bring needles, curved or straight, to do the tying. Jan Lauritzen says Dritz 30-50 quilters curved hand needles work well. Or, if you prefer, take a quilt home to finish.
As you all know lighting in the hall is not the best. If you have any battery operated LED lights, please bring them along with scissors and sewing needles. Many hands make light work. See you in October.
Program Committee: Gayle Armstrong, Elaine Boulay, Judie Goldstein, and Tova Sobel

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
I can't believe it is already October. Where has 2019
gone? Here we are at the start of the holiday season. First
one up is Halloween! For those of you who wish to dress
up please do. We will have a costume parade and prizes.
As we start to head into the final months of 2019 and
planning for 2020, we need to come together and plan
what's best for our association. Time to try new things
and revive some old things.
As you saw at the September meeting we have a new
twist on Block of the Month. I can't wait to see what
everyone comes up with. We are going to revive Quilt
College but need volunteer instructors to help lead
different activities. We have challenges ahead of us but
as a group we will find a way to come together for the
betterment of our Association.
If you know of somewhere to host workshops please
forward those ideas to the workshop committee. Have an
idea on speakers to come and enrich our meetings
forward their contact information onto the programs
committee.
As a result of the vote held at the September meeting the
Library will officially be disbanded. There are still some
books that we kept in the event that the vote determined
to reopen the library.
If you are apart of a mini group please email
[email protected] and let me know the name
of your group, when you meet, and if you are open to
new members. We are also planning a night next year to
showcase these groups along with other fun things going
on in our Association.
Come out for our meeting for some fun and some Trick
or Treating.
Respectfully Submitted,
Kim Freed, President

MEET YOUR BOARD
SFVQA 2nd Vice President and Photography - Elaine
Boulay
I have always enjoyed
quilt shows and vintage
quilts in museums, so I
began quilting about 11
years ago. Semester-long
quilting classes taught by
Rita Streimer were offered
at Kennedy High School
in Granada Hills, close to
my home, so I joined and
learned the basics of
everything from hand
quilting to machine
quilting of curved pieces.
At an arts show at the Chatsworth Train Depot, an SFVQA
member near Zena Thorpe’s featured artist quilt display
asked viewers if they were interested in joining SFVQA.
My friend joined immediately but later decided she couldn’t
attend many of the Monday meetings, so I took over her
membership and have been a member since then. I have
been the SFVQA photographer for many years, helped at
Quilters for Others, and have helped sell Opportunity Quilt
tickets at various shows and shops. When I am not quilting,
I hike and volunteer at the Southern California Genealogical
Society Library with my French Canadian ancestors group.

Volunteer Responsibilities:
Volunteer responsibilities are outlined in the Bylaws. Also documents are available that give more detail to those who want to
volunteer. We have been very fortunate to have members who are willing to step into the leadership roles for our Association.
They are dedicated members who give their time and energy to insure the continuing success of the Association. You are
reminded of this at every meeting. Many thanks to these Volunteers.
Member Responsibilities:
1. Read the Newsletter: our wonderful detailed monthly Newsletter has everything you need to know. It is important that you read
it to be up-to-date on our activities.
2. Turn off cell phones and do not talk during the business meeting or the Speaker's presentation: please be respectful of the
dedicated volunteers giving their reports and the wonderful Speakers giving the presentations. While you may not be interested
in what is being said, others around you are interested and cannot hear when you are talking.
3. Respond to surveys and share your ideas and opinions: Your President and Board members serve the members and are very
much interested in your ideas and opinions. When they prepare surveys and ballots, please respond to them. It may be through
an email or a paper survey or ballot. Regardless, respond! This helps your President and Board to serve you better.
4. Volunteer for a Board or Extended Board Position: so many of the same people have been volunteering year after year. Many
would like to take a break. It is so important to have new people with new ideas on the Board. Check the front of your roster to
see a list of the Board positions and let the Parliamentarian know which the position is of interest to you. As mentioned above,
the Bylaws have a short description of the responsibilities of Board positions but more detailed documents are available.
5. Know and communicate with your Board: you can phone, email, or talk in person to Board members letting them know any
ideas, suggestions, concerns, problems, etc. Don't forget that it means a lot to Board members to also know that they are
appreciated and you approve of all the work that they do.

BLOCK OF THE MONTH Lynn Lowe
As I am sure you know, there has NOT been substantial
participation in the Block of the Month Group for a while
now. I have recently taken over this position, and am
implementing a change.
Block of the Month will NO LONGER be raffled off to
those who participate.....INSTEAD.... we will be making a
"Block" for ourselves each month, with the fabric of our
choice AND show off the blocks during Show 'N Tell each
month at the Association Meeting! At the end of the year,
we will each have enough blocks to make our own Quilt
~ How exciting is that!
My inspiration for this came from my sister, who
participated in a similar project down in the San Diego Area
~ The quilts all came out spectacular! I have invited my
sister to come to the September Meeting to share her quilt,
hopefully she will be able to make it.
Pattern Name: Code Talker
Type of Quilt: Scrap
Size of Quilt: TBD by the quilter
Finished square size: 15"
How much Fabric: My sister used > 40 different fabrics in
her gorgeous quilt!
This pattern was initially conceived by Norma Whaley, she
stated, "...my inspiration for this quilt came from a Navajo
Rug display at a museum. The Navajos are the largest
Native American Tribe in the US, Scholars believe the
Navajo have thrived because of their ability to selectively
borrow ideas from other cultures while maintaining their
original culture and distinctive identity. And so, I have
borrowed this idea from them for a quilt. During WWII, the
Navajos were called upon to be Code Talkers; the language
they were forbidden to speak is the same language that
saved this nation.
NAVAJO RUG EXHIBIT
Directions: Go through your scraps and stash, select your
color palette/theme and start creating!!!! Each block
consists of a "Focus" strip, with strips of differing widths on
each side to fill out to 15 1/2" The "Focus" block can be 3",
4", 5" or 6" wide ~ this concept means you can throw
perfection to the wind!!!! Norma pieced some of her blocks
lengthwise if the strips were not long enough, stating,
"...Don't lose any sleep over making the design row work
out mathematically to 15 1/2", I simply added a filler piece
to make the row the desired length. This brings additional
visual interest to each block..."
CODE TALKER QUILT~ my sisters version:
I will provide ideas and patterns for "Focus Blocks" each
month.
For my first block, I am going to use the French Braid
Pattern.
Directions:
Center Square - Cut one (1) 3" square
Braid - 6 or more coordinated fabrics cut into 1 1/2" strips
- sub cut each strip into 3" lengths and 5" lengths
Start with the center 3" square and sew a 3" to one side, flip
one-quarter turn and sew the 5" strip continue with each
strip until Focus Strip is the desired length (15 1/2" unless
wish to put a solid strip on each end) When desired length is
reached trim the edges leaving a 1/4" seam allowance and
then start adding additional strips lengthwise.
