From the President…

Time has come for us to nominate candidates for 2005 board of directors. Bob Stevenson and Ron Rossi will be the nominating committee this year. Nominations are open between the September and November meetings. Nominations are closed at the November meeting during which elections are held. The SDFWA Board of Directors consists of five elected officers, President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and Member at Large. Contact Bob or Ron if you have someone to nominate.

Bob Stevenson 619-422-7338 [email protected] Ron Rossi 619-582-9883 [email protected]

In addition to the five elected board members we have many important committee people that really run the organization and make it what it is. Any volunteer organization is only as good as the number of members willing to contribute. We currently have 33 committees, each requiring a chairperson. This is a great organization but if we are to continue to offer as many activities through out the year as in the past, we need more people to help. This is a chance to be part of the largest and most active woodworking organization in the world! Professional woodworking experience is not necessary. After all, most members consider themselves amateurs or experienced amateurs. We will train you and provide you with lots of help to get started. If you are interested in helping please contact me or any board member and we will get you started.

The fall seminar was another great event for those who attended. Christian Becksvoort put on a really good seminar. However, attendance was down and we did not make the break-even point this year. I would like some feedback. If you have attended in the past but did not attend this year please drop me a line and let me know why you did not attend. Don’t be shy. Just give me a reason, even if it had nothing to due with the seminar itself.

The fall season is upon us and it is not too early to start making those Christmas presents. Bring your projects to the brag table to share with the rest of us.

Martin Ruch will be collecting the children’s chairs at the meeting. Bring in your finished chair so they can be distributed. If you have questions on finishing the chairs just call or email Martin at 619-287-3366 or [email protected]. See you at the meeting.

Ed Gladney, President 858-484-4366, [email protected] ______________________________________________________________________________________________

Help Wanted

We are still looking for a dynamic person who likes to meet new and talented people who are woodworking professionals. In this particular job you will be contacting individuals on a one to one basis and arranging with them to put on our program. Del Cover has been doing this job twelve years and because of increased demands on his time, he can no longer continue on. He will be stepping down at the end of the year. If you think you would like to hold this position, please contact any of the following people: Ed Gladney 858-484-4366 or [email protected], Ron Rossi 619-582-9883 or [email protected], Bob Stevenson 619-422-7338 or [email protected].

October Shop Tour The next shop tour should prove to be a good one. Mr. Allen Brent from the San Marcos High School is providing the venue for our October 1st tour. He will be opening up his wood shop and cabinet making lab for us to visit. There will be a few demonstrations using some of the labs various equipment including a CNC machine, something that a few of us have never seen in operation. The lab facilities at San Marcos High School are better than most colleges and the program has some of the same computer technology as the University of California Berkeley’s engineering department. Upon completion of the course, students are certificated for placement in industry and can be advanced placed at Palomar College. Many of the students who have completed the program are working in local industry and have advanced to ownership of their own shops.

• Allan Brent, the instructor, has been a leader throughout the county and was recognized as the outstanding instructor of the year by the San Diego Industry Council in 2004. Two years ago he was also chosen as the nation’s top educator of the year by the Woodworkers Machinery Industry Association. 27 year record of proven excellence with awards from the San Diego County Fair and consistently wins more ribbons than any other high school program in the county

• Recognized nationally by the American Woodworking Industry Association for its wins of best of show at its prestigious national design contest.

San Marcos High School is located at: 1615 W San Marcos Blvd, San Marcos CA 92078. To get to the shop: Pull into the parking lot and drive straight along the side of the football field, then park behind the gym. Walk around the front of the gym and up a ramp to room 501. The door will be open. Mr. Brent has a class that ends at noon and will be eating lunch after class and begin the tour at 12:30.

For a map of the location use the following link: http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?searchtype=address&country=US&addtohistory=&searchtab=home&address=1615+W.+San+Marcos+Blvd&city=San+Marcos&state=ca&zipcode=92078+

Due to MR Brent’s teaching schedule, the tour will begin at 12:30 on Saturday, October 1st. Robert Threm, Shop Tours Coordinator 619 993-8207Cell, 619 424-8207 Home ______________________________________________________________________________________________

Pro Bono Letters San Diego Fine Woodworkers Association June 30, 2005 Thank you for the wonderful wooden toys and furniture you donated to Calvary Chapel Christian School. These items will get a lot of use in our classrooms. They are very nice and much appreciated. May God bless you richly for your generosity. In Jesus Name, Doug Verner Principal ______________________________________________________________________________________________ San Diego Fine Woodworkers Association July 27, 2005 On behalf of Family Health Centers of San Diego, please accept our sincere thanks and appreciation for the recent donation of several hundred wooden toys and two children's tables and eight chairs. They will be put to good use both at our organization and throughout the community. The two children's tables and chairs, along with the cars, trucks and baby cradles, are already in use at our two Counseling Centers-located in Logan Heights and in Spring Valley. Our counselors provide individual and family support services to school-age children and their parents who are struggling with multiple emotional and social issues. Having a special table and chair to use during treatment sessions, and having such lovely toys to "play" with are important elements of the services provided. The collection of small wooden cars and trucks will be used over the next six months during our many "back-to-school" immunization events as well as being shared with residents of the YWCA Family Shelter and the Tecate Christmas Train distribution via Soroptimist International of Mission Bay (a professional business women's service group). Once again, our thanks for your group's generous donations that come from their individual labor and love of wood. Sincerely, Nancy Bryant WaIIis, DrPH, LCSW Regional Director, Special Populations and Satellite Operations ______________________________________________________________________________________________ The Waldorf School of San Diego August 23, 2005 S.D. Fine Woodworkers Association Dear Friends, Thank you for your lovely donation of eight chairs for our grade one class. Your work is beautiful. Waldorf schools are committed to surrounding children with beauty and hand crafted materials, and you are supporting our mission with your generous donation. In addition, donations like this make it possible for us to maintain our policy of not turning any child away due to limited financial resources. Your willingness to buy the materials as well as craft the chairs is a gift we treasure. It was a true labor of love that we deeply appreciate. Sincerely, Gaylen Osborn Administrator Jim Vitale, Pro Bono Chairman 6

September Membership Report

As of 12 September our membership total is 1457, or 103 less than last year at this date. There have been 58 fewer renewals and 45 less new members. With 64 members outside San Diego County, it is uncertain how many will renew for next year. Thirty-six members for 2004 who lived outside SD County did not renew for 2005; however, most in that category have maintained their memberships.
