March Program Building the Appalachian Ladder Back Chair Member, Russ Filbeck, many time Del Mar Fair winner in the Design in Wood Show, master chair builder and Palomar College teacher, will show us how he builds his Appalachian ladder back chairs. He will talk about the history along with the entire process of making these chairs. This will include the splitting of the wood rungs and making the bent laminations for rockers along with the weaving of the seats. He will be bringing a 3 slat chair, a 4 slat arm chair and a 6 slat rocker for display. This will be an excellent overview of how these award-winning chairs are built. Del Cover, Program Chairman From the President… The Design In Wood show entry form is now available at our sponsors and also posted on the web site. There are 21 categories with a total of $16,500 in cash awards. Awards for each category are $200 for first, $175 for second, $150 for third and $75 plus a two-year subscription to Woodworkers Journal for fourth place. In addition SDFWA members are eligible for two additional categories, Amateur and Professional, with $250 for first, $150 for second and $100 for third place in each category. These categories were added last year to increase the number of awards for members. So get to work on those entries. The Design In Wood show requires lots of help from our members. We need your help for set up, tear down and also during the show. The biggest job is set-up and we need lots of help. The more help the better. No experience is necessary, just show up at the fair grounds and we can put you to work. Bring a screw gun if you have one but it is not necessary. We even supply donuts and coffee and pizza for lunch. Look for details in the newsletter. We also need volunteers to work in the 18 th century cabinet shop making children’s chairs. Each year we produce about 50 chairs for charity. These are hand made during the fair by our members. It is a great way to learn and practice hand tool techniques. If you want to learn how they did it in the old days sign up and we will teach you some new methods. We also need volunteers to work the floor during the show. Sign up sheets for all shifts will be available at the general meeting. All volunteers receive fair tickets. The more you volunteer, the more tickets you get. Work a few shifts and treat your family. Besides being a lot of fun, it is a good way to get to know your fellow members. This is our big event for the year so sign up and plan to help. Thanks to everyone for their donation to the WUFA effort. We collected over $400 at last month’s meeting and the association made up the rest to make it an even $500. We have several new committee chairpersons. Our new publicity chairman, Tom Henderson, reports that our general meetings will now be announced in the Sunday Tribune. Our new Special Events chair, Joe Madziarczyk, is planning the spring bus tour and fall seminar. New Toy chairman, Roger Solheid and new Pro Bono Chair, Jim Vitale both have reports in this month’s newsletter. I am sorry to report that E. Paul Woodward passed away recently. Paul was a big supporter of SDFWA in addition to being the Chargers physician for many years. He will be missed. Remember to bring something for the brag table and get your raffle tickets early. Car-pool if you can as parking is at a premium. See you at the meeting. Ed Gladney, President

Spring Bus Tour May 3, 2003

Gamble House

Huntington Museum

This year the SDFW Association is sponsoring a bus tour to the Gamble House in Pasadena and the Huntington Museum in San Marino, California. The Gamble House is the most complete and best-preserved work of American Arts and Crafts architects Charles and Henry Greene, who designed the house and furnishings in 1908. The house, a National Historic Landmark, is owned by the City of Pasadena and operated by the University of Southern California. In 1990, the entire collection of Greene and Greene designed furniture from the Thorsen house came to the Gamble House through an anonymous bequest. This installation allows additional pieces from the collection to go on view. The dining room table and server have been added, completing the suite of dining room furniture from the Thorsen house, the last of the “ultimate bungalows.” Furnishings from several other Greene and Greene houses are also on display, illustrating the architects' interest in combining Asian aesthetics and traditional techniques of handcraftsmanship. The Huntington is an oasis of art and culture set amidst 150 acres of breathtaking gardens. Three art galleries and a library showcase magnificent collections of paintings, sculptures, rare books, manuscripts, and decorative arts. The botanical collection features over 14,000 different species of plants. In addition to special exhibitions, the Scott Gallery includes a permanent installation of works by the early 20th-century Southern California architects, Charles and Henry Greene, as well as other Arts and Crafts objects, organized in collaboration with the Gamble House (USC). The chronological arrangement of the Scott Gallery's permanent collection traces the development of American art over three centuries. Period furniture and silver provide a domestic context for the paintings and sculpture. Visitors enter a display of art from the colonial period and the first years of the republic, and continue through groupings of works from the antebellum period, the post-Civil War era, and the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In the central gallery, monumental paintings from the 18th and 19th centuries are complemented by furniture, silver, and sculpture. Tickets: The cost is $45 per person, which includes transportation, admissions costs for both tours, lunch and gratuities. Tickets will go on sale at the April 26th meeting at 6:15PM on a first come first served basis. Sorry, no early pre-orders or mail orders. You must be present to buy a ticket. Checks made to SDFWA preferred. Busses will embark/debark in Mission Valley and North County Fair. Complete Itinerary and boarding details will be provided with the tickets

Shop Tour

At 9:00 AM on April 5, 2003 we will have a shop tour at Charlie Whites shop, located on 325 Kempton St., #1017, Spring Valley, CA 91977-2391. Charlie is well known to many at the association for the fine quality tungsten carbide Skarpaz saw blades he sells at the meetings. The shop serves woodworkers who are residents in the Mount Miguel Covenant Village Health Facility in Spring Valley. The woodworkers do everything from fine furniture construction and repair of furniture, to carving, woodturning, scroll saw use and general woodwork. There are about a dozen residents who use the shop regularly, often with 4 or 5 workers in the shop at one time. The shop is well equipped with professional quality machines, including table saws, bandsaws, as well as their latest edition of a Vicmark lath. There will be demonstrations on the Hegner scroll saw and the Vicmark lathe and a display of some of the residents work

Directions: Drive south on I-5 or I-805 to highway #54, then East on 54 to Jamacha Blvd. Take a right on Jamacha Blvd to the first stop light (Kempton St.) Drive up the hill and watch for signs -- follow to parking areas and then walk to the shop.

Tool Swapmeet’s a’ Comin’

It’s been six months since the last one; plenty of time to look around your shop for those things you haven’t used for a while and to make a list of those things you’re tired of doing without. Once again the Rockler crew has welcomed us to their parking lot on Clairemont Mesa Boulevard for an exciting morning amongst tools and the woodworkers and collectors who buy, sell and use them. The first Sunday in April is the SIXTH, and starting time is dark and early at 6:00 am. Most of the sales are finished before noon, so get there early for the best buys. This twice-a-year SDFWA/PAST activity is free to both buyers and sellers. Bring a table or a truck bed or a tailgate and join in the fun. Early arrivers get the best bargains and the best locations. NTC, Civic Arts & Cultural Center Search Committee Recently the SDFWA was invited to meet with the NTC Foundation who is administering the formation of the "Civic Arts & Cultural Center" on the old Navy Training Center. SDFWA is forming a search committee to evaluate the potential of our association with the center in the following areas: Shop Space Gallery Space Meeting Space (Board & General Meetings) Seminar Space In view of the inherent problems with our non-profit status, we are calling for additional help from the membership. The exact level of help at this point is open but we feel that considerable assistance could be provided by anyone with major tax experience such as a CPA. If you have these credentials and would be willing to help the association, please contact Bob Stevenson at 619-422-7338 or email [email protected]. ________________________

LOCAL WOODWORKER LECTURES AT WILLIAMSBURG JANUARY 2003 CONFERENCE

Since January 24, 2000, the Society of American Period Furniture Makers has held its annual meeting in conjunction with the "Working Wood in the 18th Century" conference at Williamsburg, Virginia. The conference is co-sponsored by the Williamsburg Foundation and Fine Woodworking Magazine. This year's conference was entitled "Surface Ornamentation" and was held in the Hennage Auditorium in the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Art Museum. The conference is presented in two sessions because of the overwhelming attendance. This year each session had in excess of 200 attendees. The conference this year covered moldings, veneering, and marquetry on 17th and 18th century furniture with presentations by museum curators as well as woodworkers and educators. Lectures and demonstrations were provided in making molding with 18th century style planes; designing, making and inlaying stringing, bandings and pictorial inlays; hammer veneering; and SDFWA member Patrick Edwards presented a very comprehensive lecture/demonstration of complex marquetry. PHOTO Patrick Edwards of Antique Refinishers and the American School of French Marquetry demonstrates how to cut marquetry on his Chevrolet (marquetry donkey) while the image of his work is projected on the screen. SDFWA Makes 11th Consecutive Annual $1,000 Contribution to San Diego Public Library

On February 5th, Ed Gladney, SDFWA President, presented the 11th consecutive contribution of $1,000 to the San Diego Public Library. The annual SDFWA contribution is matched dollar for dollar by the City of San Diego and distributed to the San Diego public library central branch as well as outlaying branches. The city matching funds are divided in half with $500 augmenting the SDFWA donation to purchase additional woodworking texts, videos, and reference materials. The remaining $500 from the city matching funds may be used to purchase materials anywhere within the city library system.

This annual donation has contributed significantly to the assembly of an impressive array of woodworking reference materials. Today there are nearly 1,000 books, 966 to be exact, in the woodworking section the library. For those of you planning to visit the library and check out these fine reference materials, the books are located under the 684 classification section. You'll be impressed.

A Letter of Thanks from

Woodworkers United for America Mr. Ed Gladney President, SDFWA Dear Ed, I would like to acknowledge your donation of $500.00 to WUFA and our cause. Your organization is the first and only woodworker’s organization to have donated money. Having been a past member of your stellar organization, an exhibitor at Del Mar, helping at the Designs in Wood show, I am well aware of many of the fine things that SDFWA has done in the past. This is just another one of the very fine things that SDFWA can add to its stature in the woodworking community. Please extend my gratitude on behalf of all of our Directors for this very kind gesture. We really do appreciate the help. You can be sure that the money will only be used to further our efforts to distribute the memorial flag cases to the families of the 9-11 disaster. We will acknowledge the efforts of SDFWA on our web site. Thank you again and God Bless, George E. DuBois National Director,Woodworkers United for America http://www.woodworkersunitedforamerica.org/ ______________________________________________________________________________________________

SDFWA Mailing List We currently have 145 members subscribed to our mailing list and the numbers are growing. In case you haven’t heard, this is the email mailing list where we provide last minute information and reminders. We try to plan events well in advance and notify everyone via the newsletter and web site. Unfortunately sometimes Murphy intervenes and it is necessary to make a last minute change to a location, time or date. Subscribing to the list will ensure you have the greatest possible notice about these changes. This is not a chat room or anything like that and we don’t give out your email address to anyone else. Occasionally we send an email when we have something important to share with the membership. You can join from our website at this address: http://www.sdfwa.org/memberapp.htm just enter your email address in the box and click the “join” button. See you on the list!
