PROGRAM
Dave Pepalis
Kristin comes into woodworking as a person who loves to
create and build. So when she came to the end of a music
degree she found a way to combine music and building by
going to the Chicago School of Violin Making.
Ten years of playing viola and 20 years of crafting and
tinkering had her well prepared for this meticulous profes-
sion.
Three years later she graduated with 4 Violins, 2 violas,
and a cello and started working for Peter Seman Violins in
Skokie.
Everyday there is a learning experience, working with all
levels of instruments from 1/16th size violins to Old Italian
masters.
When not working at the shop she works as an independent
maker through Siegfried Strings, she
currently working on a commissioned violin and recently
sold her first viola.

Shaker Oval Box Workshop
Reminder
The DuPage Woodworkers Club
has scheduled a Shaker Oval Box
Workshop for May 24 and 25,
2013. The workshop gives participants a hands-on
experience in making a nesting set of five oval
boxes in cherry. The fee includes all materials, in-
struction booklet, and the use of tools during the
workshop. Along the way, you will learn some
background on the Shaker life and craftsmanship.
A general presentation on Shaker box making will
be offered Friday evening open to all members
from 6pm to 7:30pm. The hands-on work for paid
participants will start Friday evening at 8pm and
finish about 10:00pm. Hands-on work continues on
Saturday from 8:00am to 3:30pm - a box lunch will
be served on Saturday. The sessions will be held at
St. James the Apostle Church in Glen Ellyn. The
final workshop details will be communicated to
participants in May.
Cost of the workshop will be $125 per person, in-
cluding lunch on Saturday. Not bad, considering
the benefits of the instruction and experience in box
making, and you will leave the workshop with five
nice shaker boxes worth the cost alone.
Our instructor will be John Wilson who conducts
woodworking classes all over the country. John has
been leading these classes for 30 years, teaching at
Lansing (Michigan) Community College, Kelly
Mehler’s School, and woodworking seminars. His
business, The Home Shop, supplies the box making
trade. John writes for Popular Woodworking, Fine
Woodworking, and WoodenBoat magazines. Check out John’s website for more information: www.shakerovalbox.com

The President’s Corner
Two members of our Club
have volunteered to accept
the responsibilities of va-
cancies on the Board. Bert
LeLoup took the reins of
Newsletter Editor in Febru-
ary. The Newsletter is the
primary vehicle for keep-
ing our current members
apprised of the events and
activities of the club. Bert’s
first newsletter in February
was an unqualified success. Thanks Bert.
At the February general meeting, John Mele vol-
unteered to take over the job of publicity Chair.
John has already prepared the publicity announce-
ment for the upcoming March 20 general meet-
ing. Many of our newer members have men-
tioned that they learned about our club through
the local newspapers articles. Thanks John, for
keeping our Club in the news.
DuPage Woodworkers is considered a Commu-
nity outreach Ministry of St James and, as such,
we participated in the St James Ministry Fair on
March 2-3. The fair not only provided our Club
a chance to tell parishioners of St James about
the variety of programs our Club offers on a
monthly basis and to show examples of the wide
variety of projects that our members make, but
also to remind them that our club is actively en-
gaged in giving back to the community through
our toy donations to underprivileged children at
Christmas, birdhouse donations to medical and
senior living centers , member-donated wood pro-
jects to be used as awards at the St James annual
golf fundraising event and a wide variety of
wood projects built for use in St James church
and school.
The success of any voluntary organization, in-
cluding DuPage Woodworkers, depends upon
all members contributing some of their time and/
or talent to the group. The list of the Club’s
needs is long: Become a member of the Board,
offer to be the speaker at a program, host a
workshop, participate in a workshop, make toys,
share your ideas for programs and activities, or
make coffee for a meeting,

Secretary’s Report
Library
Marv Little
I have been getting requests for some new
woodworking books and DVD's. Most of the
time the member asks in passing. My problem
is that I do forget things. I know it's hard to
believe but it's true. If anyone has a request
could you please write it down on a small
piece of paper with your name (optional). The
Library will take all requests into considera-
tion.
Thank You
Board Meeting of March
4, 2013
Dale Gustafson called the
meeting to order at 7:00
p.m. Present were Lee
Nye, Rick Ogren, Tom
Perry, Bruce Kinney, Bert
LeLoup, Marvin Little, Stan Anderson, Dave
Pepalis, Ed Buhot, and Jerry Johnson. . Re-
minder: Any club member is invited to attend
board meetings.
The minutes of the February meeting and the
February treasurer’s report were approved. Tom
has received the formal audit report and he re-
viewed it with the board. The audit gave a clean
bill of health to the financial records. Dale will
send a letter of thanks to the Audit Committee
members.
Our membership stands at 170 which reflects 38
members being dropped for non-payment of
dues for 2013.
The club participated in the St. James ministries
fair. The activity generated some interest and
may result in an article for publication by one of
the church members. Dale will ask the church to
add a link to our website from their site.
The March program will be on making violins.
The April program may cover shop air quality
and safety.
Marv led a short discussion on library proce-
dures for acquisitions. It was confirmed that the
Librarian has authority and budget to purchase
additional material and that there is currently no
set policy on how to determine what should be
acquired.
Stan has commitments for 370 toys thus far. Cars
and animals will be featured at the next general

The board approved Dale’s appointment of John
Mele as Publicity Chair as a replacement for
Jack Pine.
Dale broached the subject of any needed projects
with church staff and they decided to table the
item until after the new priest has arrived.
The meeting adjourned at 8:13 p.m.
meeting.
Lee has eleven commitments for the Shaker
box seminar. The Friday evening/Saturday
full day affair has a fee of $125.

FEBURARY PROGRAM: The Feb. presentation was called:
Reading Wright; Furniture as Compositional Object.
Frank Lloyd Wright's furniture can be problematic for
modern designers; many of the pieces resonate more
within the context of their buildings than as stand-alone
pieces. What can contemporary furniture designers learn
from his work?
Reading Wright surveys the furniture designs of Wright
illustrating their various compositional and structural
strategies.
S. Lloyd Natof is a studio furniture artist in Oak Park IL
and has been living with and looking at Wright's furniture
all of his life. He is also the great-grandson of Frank
Lloyd Wright and teaches furniture design/build at the
Frank Lloyd Wright School of architecture.

New Members The DuPage Woodworkers welcomes members from all over the region.
Our members consist of all skill levels; from beginners to professionals.
Meetings and field trips provide an opportunity to gain and share knowl-
edge about woodworking. Our regular meetings are once a month for
about 2 1/2 hours. Meetings (usually the fourth Wednesday of the month)
consist of some announcements about activities, a short discussion of any
woodworking problems that members want to ask about, a drawing for
woodworking prizes, and a presentation on some aspect of woodworking.
If you are interested in joining the DuPage Woodworkers, you are invited
to attend a meeting. If you become a member, dues are twenty-five dol-
lars per year. Membership entitles you to attend meetings, to go on field
trips (shop visits, woodworking businesses, etc.), and a discount at sev-
eral local woodworking supply companies.
