AS Required Knowledge and Skills

Texas high schools offer a world of opportunities to build confidence, get experience, and

learn the basics of the Hospitality & Tourism industry.

Career preparation starts with mastering English, math, and other academic subjects. English

language skills and public speaking skills are crucial in Hospitality & Tourism careers.

Electives in Hospitality & Tourism usually fall into two areas at Texas high schools: hospitality

(also called hotel management), and culinary arts (sometimes called food production or res-

taurant management).

Many Texas high schools have courses that give students first hand experience in both areas.

Some high schools have hospitality programs that partner with a local hotel to give students

experience with working at a hotel. Some high schools also have student– run restaurants.

Students in the culinary classes often get the opportunity to be certified in ServSafe. This cer-

tificate certifies that students know basic sanitation and safety skills. (Source: Achievetexas.org)
