In the City Council election this year, there are quite a number of Chinese candidates coming from Melbourne suburbs with a significant Chinese population. They come from different background including the first generation migrants from Hong Kong, Taiwan, China and Malaysia, as well as the Australian born second generation Chinese. I have two interesting observations.

Firstly, in the Whitehorse City Council, being one of the major Chinese commercial hubs in Melbourne where we can find the grand annual functions to celebrate the Lunar New Year and the Mid-Autumn festival, there is only one Chinese candidate Mr Robert Chong. Is it because no other Chinese cares to join in or because they are all put off by the high bar set by Mr Robert Chong, during his service as the Whitehorse Major? Or it could be the lack of a good supportive election team in this area. This has caused my concern.

Secondly, there are a total of 9 election teams nominating for the various positions of major, deputy major and members of the Melbourne City Council. Over half of the teams have put Chinese with higher priority for the position of Deputy Council Major or Council members. The underlying meaning is the reliance on a local Chinese team member in bridging with the Chinese government, in view of the strong economical growth of China. We hope at the end we could have a Chinese deputy major and three Chinese members serving on the Council.

Over the recent functions held for the celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival and the National Days of China and Taiwan, many candidates have seized the opportunities to promote themselves. I think candidates with a real heart to serve will get the community support they need. In the previous two issues, we have already made reports on some candidates and in this issue we would have a wider coverage on the election and all Chinese candidates. I hope all these candidates will remain active and prominent in community service not just for the purpose of winning the election but as well as when they are not holding an official title.
