24 th September, 2010 www.howells-cardiff.gdst.net 5 th – 11 th July, 2013 www.howells-cardiff.gdst.net The Sports Presentation on Monday started the week off splendidly, where we celebrated the many, many achievements of the students in the sporting arena. We also took this opportunity for the students to say their goodbyes to Mrs Jones, our Head of PE, who is retiring this year. The Young Leaders’ team, some staff and I went to the Drapers’ Company Election Service in Cornhill, London, which is where the new Master is elected. This was followed by a splendid lunch at Drapers’ Hall. The students were fortunate enough to be given a guided tour of this amazing building, including the silver vaults. They also saw Thomas Howell’s chest, in which folklore has it that he stored the golden ducats that the Drapers invested in order to establish Howell’s. The Summer Concert, with the theme of Magic, was a wonderful event and the staff number was definitely a magic moment! The talent of the students is amazing and the concert was truly a night to remember. Friday saw Founders’ Day assembly, where our first oral history film was shown with three Hywelians being interviewed by some of our girls in the Senior School. They gave a fascinating insight into life in Howell’s in the Second World War. The assembly was a wonderful celebration of recent School and College successes. Congratulations to Lewis who won the final tally of House points! This was followed by the Thomas Howell Break, which took place in various locations throughout the school and the students celebrated their Founder with cookies and drinks in their Houses. This weekend, a number of the new Year 13 are off to Clare College, Cambridge for the Trust Oxbridge weekend. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students who hope to apply to Oxford or Cambridge to meet other students in this position and starting to prepare for the application process. OUSTANDING LITERARY SUCCESS IN ANNE FRANK COMPETITION!

Two of our Year 9 students, Sasha Y and Nia M-R, are among the thirteen national finalists in a competition run by the Anne Frank Trust UK.

The Trust exists to challenge prejudice and reduce hatred by drawing on the power of Anne Frank’s diary with its key messages of tolerance and respect for others. Anne’s diary is a shining example for aspiring young writers today providing a living testimony about her times and concerns. The competition entitled ‘Thirteen in Thirteen’ encouraged thirteen year olds to explore the issues and topics which most concern them in British society of 2013.

The Trust received over 1350 entries nationwide, and we are delighted and proud to announce that Nia and Sasha are amongst the thirteen successful finalists; in fact, Nia has been placed in the top three of the winning competitors. The panel of judges, which included such eminent writers as Cathy Cassidy, commented on the thoughtfulness and careful expression of the winning letters. The letters of the thirteen finalists will now be presented to the Prime Minister, David Cameron, and he will respond to the winning letters in The Times very soon. Nia, as one of the top three finalists, will present her entry in person to David Cameron at Downing Street.

The winners will be receiving some great prizes, including a parcel of books and an e-certificate, which they can print, frame and hang on the wall at home or in school. The Anne Frank Trust will be releasing a podcast about the campaign too, so stay tuned.

We hope you enjoy this sneak preview of Sasha and

Nia’s letters!

Nia’s letter to Mr Cameron

Dear Mr. Cameron,

As an ardent royalist I’m a little worried about the sustainability and future of the monarchy. It seems almost invidious to argue that an institution that costs the taxpayer an estimated £200 million a year has any place in this age of austerity. Couldn’t that money be better spent on healthcare for the sick or housing for the homeless? And many people don’t even like the Royal family. Is it really fair to spend the people’s money on things that they might be opposed to? These questions, and many more, are ones that trouble all of us self-respecting royalists.

So, how can the monarchy be sustained? The modern royal family is almost obscenely commercialized. With photographs of royals selling for £2 million, some of the more hard-core monetarists in your cabinet might argue that this is something that needs to be harnessed. Harry, with his penchant for nude photo-shoots, would surely be a huge money-spinner. Another way to raise money for the monarchy would be to tax the wealthiest 0.5% of the population and those who receive honours. That way, only the people who benefit from the monarchy and those who are affluent enough to afford it will have to pay. In return, they can reap the country’s gratitude and gain entrance to the royal networking opportunities that are garden parties. That said, most of these people are probably on the garden party guest list already.

Yours royally,

Nia Moseley-Roberts

Sasha’s letter to Mr Cameron

Dear Prime Minister,

Euthanasia is a highly contentious topic and I should like to suggest a few reasons why, under certain circumstances, individuals should have the right to end their lives.

We claim to live in a democratic society where people are free to live their lives as they choose, so why should governments decide how and when somebody should end their life?

The decision to allow an individual to end their life in a dignified way should not be taken lightly and it is important to put in place appropriate safeguards to protect vulnerable individuals from family members, doctors, politicians and potential stakeholders, who may wish to terminate their lives for their own ends. Equally, we need to be certain that if an individual expresses a desire to end their life, they do so coherently and not in an emotional or disturbed state of mind.

With safeguards in place, why would we block a decision to end the life of a person experiencing unbearable pain, with no possibility of relief, and poor quality of life? We regard ourselves as a compassionate and civilised society and yet sufferers of many incurable diseases, such as Locked-in Syndrome and Alzheimer’s are condemned to endure prolonged agony, often against their will.

Suffering needlessly is wrong and people should be free to put an end to their torment. Accordingly, I appeal to you to use your position and influence to change this outdated, insensitive and cruel law.

Yours faithfully,

Sasha Yilmaz

ROTARY INTERACT NEWS

Carys and Anushka, Year 12, represented Howell’s at Llandaff Cathedral’s annual Patronal Service on Sunday, 30th June.

They carried the HSL banner, which now also has ‘Ysgol Howell, Llandaf’ on the reverse. Many thanks to the girls and to the Art Department for our bilingual banner.

The Interact Group has been baking recently to raise money for small gifts for the children in the hospice summer camp in Belarus run by the local '5 Cs' charity (Chernobyl Children Cancer Care Cardiff).

Eight Howell’s students will carry out voluntary work at the summer camp this year: Becky B and Becky W (Year 13), Claire S, Sarah L, Stefan R, Matt P, Emily B and Katie W (Year 12). The cake sales held in the College on Wednesday and Thursday this week raised £72.57 for the charity.

Good luck to those assisting in the children’s care or helping to maintain the camp.

HOWELL’S SKI TEAMS EXCEL AT THE CARDIFF AND SOUTH WALES SLALOM

Congratulations to the two Senior School Ski Teams who represented Howell’s in the Cardiff and South Wales Slalom competition at Fairwater on Wednesday evening.

The girls skied exceptionally well and came first and second overall, chalking up an amazing 17 medals between the 7 of them – a fantastic achievement! For Bronwen E (Y7) and Olivia G (Y9) this was their first competition. It was also a very special event for Sam M (Y13) who has captained the team for a number of years. This was her last time competing in the U18 girls event, which she won with style!

Well done Sam and thank you for all you commitment and effort over the years. Likewise, a huge thank you to Harriet J in Year 8. Harriet not only was in the winning team, but was the overall female winner of the day – with the fastest run. We will miss you both. The girls are now looking forward to their next competition at Llangrannog in October.

PLANNING ON ATTENDING AN OPEN DAY? New Year 13 students should be attending or planning to attend an Open Day for their shortlisted courses. Many universities are holding Open Days on weekends and in September/October and we would strongly advise that they attend to get a feel for the place they may be living and studying in for several years! All College students have been emailed and given a copy of suggested questions to ask at Open Days to make the best use of their time on the day. Please ask your son/daughter to check their inbox for this. You can check the dates of upcoming Open Days here: http://www.opendays.com The Guardian have produced some useful articles for parents of 16+ students preparing to apply and go to University including looking at what students should take to university, how to plan for open days and the important role you play in asking the really important questions at open days – find our more here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/education/parents-of-students-16-and-over

END OF YEAR 12 PIQUE-NIQUE

Thanks to the lovely weather, we were able to enjoy an end of year French picnic with all our French students in Year 12.
