Quality Assurance—For All Livestock Exhibitors—Deadline is JUNE 15TH! Each year 4-H (8 and older) and FFA youth are REQUIRED to complete Quality Assurance if you want to exhibit breeding beef, market beef, feeder calf, cow-calf, bucket calf, market goat, breeding goat, market sheep, breeding sheep, market swine, poultry, or rabbits at the County Fair, State Fair or Ak-Sar-Ben.

Failure to complete this requirement will make you ineligible to exhibit your animals. It is your responsibility to complete this

requirement by the deadline if you want to exhibit your livestock projects.

This is a transition year from the LQA site to the YQCA site. Your options are: • NEW members who have never taken QA before will use the Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) site at: yqca.learngrow.io You will use your FAMILY 4HOnline login and password information (login and password your family uses to enroll in 4-H) to access the courses for the ACTIVE youth in your family. Only ACTIVE members will show in the drop down menu for access to the course. Registration questions with YQCA should be directed to [email protected]. There will not be local support for the YQCA program. There is a button for families that have forgotten their 4HOnline password. We do not have access to your passwords. A help sheet can be found at: http://go.unl.edu/helpforyqca. Once complete, you need to print the ONE certificate and bring it to the Extension Office by the June 15th deadline. You can no longer work ahead as in the past.

• Members who used the LQA site in the past may continue to do so for this year ONLY if you paid the course fee prior to March 31st. If you

did not pay prior to March 31st, you will then need to use the NEW YQCA site. Youth need to print off their 3 certificates for the 3 modules

they have completed and bring them to the Extension Office by the June 15th deadline. LQA (old site) instructions can be found at:

http://go.unl.edu/lqainstructions. If you completed your 3 modules but have not sent us your certificates, please do so ASAP!

• Intermediate (ages 12-14) & Senior (ages 15-18) can test out with a written test. Call our office to arrange a date to test. Studying is

recommended prior to testing. All testing must be complete by the June 15th deadline.

If you are unsure of your QA status, please call us BEFORE the deadline.

4-H & FFA Animal Eligibility Rule & Clarifications The deadline to ID, Tag and DNA your 4-H or FFA animals is June 15th with all forms & DNA envelopes at the Extension Office no later that June 15th. Points to keep in mind: * No one animal can be shown at two county fairs. Ex: If a market beef is shown at Saline County, the same animal CANNOT be shown in Gage county. THIS APPLIES TO ALL SPECIES! * The deadline to enter animals for the State Fair is August 10th. This is when you designate if an animal will show in the 4-H or FFA division. * Once you designate you CANNOT change. Ex: If you designated a market sheep as FFA, that animal CANNOT be shown at Ak-Sar-Ben as a 4-H animal. * If you enter a 4-H animal at the State Fair but do not show the animal or bring the animal, you CAN NOT enter that animal at Ak-Sar-Ben.

Jr. Fair Helpers We would like to have a Jr. Superintendent for each specie/department. The Jr. Superintendent (13-18) would work on ribbon entry on an I-pad. If interested give us a call. No experience needed. Jr. Superintendent applicants in livestock areas may not want to be showing the specie they sign up for. Ribbon and trophy helpers (age 12 & older) are also needed for the livestock shows. Volunteer with a friend or while watching someone you know exhibit their livestock. These are great opportunities to add volunteerism to your 4-H Career Portfolio.

County Fair Volunteers Needed With County Fair just a few months away, we are seeking volunteers to help with various contests, shows, etc. We need help with entry day and judging day (Tuesday) and release of exhibits (Sunday). When you receive a mailing or email from our office about volunteering, please consider helping out. Adults (parents, grandparents) and 4-H members (12 years old or older) are encouraged to be part of the upcoming contest, pre-fair events, County Fair, activities & livestock shows and the Premium Auction. We need LOTS of volunteers to make the fair successful and enjoyable for everyone involved. Please call our office or email one of our staff members if you can volunteer your time for a day, half a day, or even just a couple of hours. All help is greatly appreciated. We know you want to help your children while at fair but if you could volunteer for a few hours, we would appreciate it. Fair is a big event for just 5 staff members to pull off successfully!

Scoresheets For Your Projects Be sure to check out the scoresheets for each area you are exhibiting in for static entries. The scoresheets will help you know what judges are looking for and what they will be judging on your exhibits. You may not find a scoresheet for all your exhibits but most will have one listed. You will find them at: http://4h.unl.edu/fairbook/scoresheets-forms. You can then view, download and print for your reference. If you are looking for one and can’t find it, give us a call.

4-H Family and Clover Kid Handbooks

Please take a look through the Saline County 4-H Handbook and Clover Kid Handbooks posted on our 4-H page. This guide has been developed to help 4-H families become familiar with what is expected of them and includes information about the 4-H enrollment process all the way through making county fair entries, information on submitting a Career Portfolio and MUCH MORE. You can find the 4-H Handbook at: http://go.unl.edu/4hsalinehandbook or the Clover Kid Handbook at: http://go.unl.edu/4hsalinecloverkidhandbook

Beef Fitting Area For County Fair The Ag Society is making attempts to have fitting space for everyone within the confines of the livestock area. All beef will need to remain in the designated fitting area. Any animals attempting to enter from outside the area after 7:30 a.m. on show day will be ineligible to show. They may exit after completion of the beef show. Beef Blow & Show Rules - County Fair & State Fair The County Fair and State Fair Beef shows are both Blow and Show. Beef exhibitors will be allowed only to wash (shampoo), blowout or comb their animals for the show. a) beef animals will be shown free of any adhesive, glue, paint, or powder products. b) any compounds with adhesive qualities that cannot be combed or brushed through or alter the color of the animal are forbidden. These include, but are not limited to commonly used adhesives and colorants such as Prime Time, EZ Comb, Tail Adhesive, Ultra White Touch Up, Black Touch Up, Black Finisher and black show foam. c) alcohol, water, oil, foam or any water or alcohol-based products with no adhesive or glue qualities, or artificial colorings are permitted. These include conditioners and commonly used sprays such as Kleen Sheen, Revive, Final Bloom and white show foam. County Fair Beef animals that violate these rules will not be eligible for trophy and are dropped one live score ribbon placing. All calves WILL be checked by show personnel prior to entering the ring. The State Fair policy on fitting violations has not been made public at this time.

Canned Food Drive About $200 was raised for local backpack programs by 4-H in Saline County in May and now. . . Saline County 4-H Council wishes to continue with our “Make a Difference” theme. The Council wants to do a canned food drive in our communities wrapping up with a display at the County Fair. We want 4-H’ers to be involved in their communities. Our office will make labels for paper bags with the

information of the pick up date your club would like to set. Clubs select a day to distribute the bags in their communities and then another date to collect them. Clubs can bring items to the Extension Office when you are done collecting. We plan to display the collected

cans at the fair in the Ag Hall and then donate the items to the food bank/pantry in Saline County. Together we can “Make a Difference” in Saline County. So plan your collection and bring items to the fair.

Market animals: Both 4-H & FFA will be using EID tags and DNA for all market beef, market goats, market sheep, and market swine exhibited at the State Fair. NOTE: Ak-Sar-Ben will allow ear notches or EID tags for swine in addition to DNA. State Fair Swine is EID tag & DNA. County Fair swine will still need to be ear notched. If you have Swine that you submit DNA on and plan to show these pigs at County Fair, you MUST also complete a County Only Card (double ID) these pigs as the method for County Fair Swine ID is ear notches only. The cost of the EID tag will be $2 per tag. The cost of DNA samples will be $6 per DNA sample. Breeding animals: Animals exhibited at the State Fair and/or Ak-Sar-Ben will need to have a Breeding nomination card completed and on file at the Extension Office by June 15th. Breeding heifers will require a tattoo (4-H & FFA). Breeding sheep and goats will require a Scrapie tag for commercial animals and Scrapie tag & number matching registration papers for purebred animals. Please refer to the chart below and at this link: http://go.unl.edu/2017animalidentificationguidelines More information and form of animal identification can be found at: http://go.unl.edu/animalidentification Youth will have until Aug. 10 (State Fair online entry deadline) to declare if a particular animal will show as 4-H or FFA. However, once you declare an organization at State Fair, you may not switch for Ak-Sar-Ben (4-H show only). You will need to pick up the DNA sample envelopes and tags from our office. COUNTY FAIR - (ANIMALS SHOWN AT COUNTY FAIR ONLY) - Will use the County ONLY paperwork. WHETHER YOU SHOW AT COUNTY FAIR, STATE FAIR OR AK-SAR-BEN, YOUR ANIMALS MUST HAVE ID PAPERWORK/DNA ON FILE AT THE EXTENSION OFFICE NO LATER THAN JUNE 15TH. STATE FAIR AND AK-SAR-BEN ANIMALS MUST HAVE PREMISE ID ON FILE ALSO.

Livestock Identification For 2017

Don’t wait until the last minute to make your animal identifications. You will need to plan ahead. Will animals be shown at County Fair only, State Fair or Ak-Sar-Ben?

Identification documents are different for State Fair/Ak-Sar-Ben so you will need to know BEFORE you come to the office to get tags.
