What a difference a week makes! Just two weeks ago, we were preparing for a monster snowstorm, and then, last weekend, the temps were already in the mid-70’s! If Pittsburgh weather teaches us anything, it’s that everyone reacts to change differently. Some welcome changes in the weather, while others wish that the weather would just make up its mind already; some celebrate the change of seasons, and others worry that newly-budding plants won’t survive. We, too, are in a season of change, in the Diocese of Pittsburgh and at St Ursula. It’s not an easy set of changes, either. And, to top it all off, there’s a lot of uncertainty about the whole process. What will the future bear for us? What changes are coming our way? Why do we have to change, anyway? Last week, I was at a meeting that Bishop Zubik held for the clergy of our vicariate. As meetings go, it was a pretty good one. He discussed the On Mission for the Church Alive! Initiative, and some of the plans that are being made. We learned that, in the near future, we’ll discover whether the recommendations we made for alternative models were feasible. (I listened to your comments during our meetings last fall, and from them, created a proposal that explores the ways that we might be included in a model with St Catherine’s.). The diocese is studying our proposal, and determining whether it meets the 21 criteria for inclusion with the proposed models. As soon as I find out their conclusions, I’ll let you know! We also discussed the plan for how the initiative will roll-out, once we reach 2018. The planning isn’t complete just yet, so I’m not able to provide any details right now. (I’m expecting that the plan will be finalized in a couple of months, and I will have the opportunity at that time to share it with you.) Change is difficult. It takes us out of our comfort zone, and challenges us to act in ways that are initially unfamiliar. But, it also brings growth and new life. Our goal, as a parish and as a diocese, is to find ways to ensure that there will always be places to worship, to build community, and to celebrate our lives as Catholic Christians. Spring is just around the corner… let’s see what new creation God will give us, both now, and in the years to come! Blessings, Fr. Larry

Advent Angel

Oh Advent Angel come to me, Open my eyes that I may see

The Babe, Who born on Christmas day,

Lay in a manger in the hay And smiled upon the world so vast,

And in our hearts He cast A spell of peace and love.

Oh Advent Angel take my hand

And guide me with your heavenly band To my Saviour, newborn King,

Whose praises all your angels sing And will forever through all time—

Because He is our Lord sublime.

JESUS’ MINISTRY SUMMARIZED The story of the raising of Lazarus from the dead is the single longest story (apart from the Passion) in the Gospel of John. In it we find a summary of most of Jesus’ ministry. We see his very human nature as he is moved by Martha and Mary’s sorrows and as he himself weeps at the tomb of Lazarus. He is the wisdom of God’s Word made flesh as he explains to his followers that the death of Lazarus will serve as a sign of the glory of God. He crowns the miracles he works in John’s Gospel (which began with the most “human” miracle of making new wine at Cana’s wedding) by raising Lazarus from the dead—a “preview,” if you will, of his own death and resurrection to come. This portrait of Jesus reminds us, as we near the end of our Lenten journey, that he is with us, knows us, understands us in every moment of our lives. He knows the joy of our human feast-ing, he knows the sorrow of our weeping. As we prepare to walk with him through the days of Holy Week, we are filled with faith that—through Christ—God’s glory will be with us in every moment of our lives and—with Christ—in our life everlasting. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. LENTEN MEAGER MEALS — You are invited to attend our Lenten Meager Meal on Fridays during Lent from 12:30 pm to 1:45 pm in the Parish Social Hall. During Lent, we are encouraged to eat a meager meal (e.g., soup, bread, and water) at least once a week in order to unite ourselves with the poor and hungry among us. Various church groups will be preparing and serving the meals. The menu for the week will be posted in the church vestibules. The suggested donation is $3 per person. Stations of the Cross will take place in the church at 2 pm (with the school community) and 7 pm on Fridays during Lent. APRIL 9 POT LUCK BRUNCH AND EASTER EGG HUNT — The 2nd annual Palm Sunday Potluck Brunch and Easter Egg Hunt will be held on the school grounds after the 11:30 am Mass on Palm Sunday, April 9, 2017. Please fill out the form and return.
