We are still wishing all a Happy New Year and we all had a blessed Epiphany!!! The feast of the "great coming"
of Emmanuel, God is with us, continues. Matthew concludes the story of the wise men with the phrase "they
returned to their home by a different route." While acknowledging the need to avoid the treacherous Herod,
commentators throughout history have seen a broader meaning to the comment. They see in the text, and
expression of changed lives that would never be the same because they had met Jesus....their lives were forever
'on a different path'. This reading reflexively calls us to examine our own life and its path. How is our life
different because we have seen Jesus? 2020 was quite a year. Many of us have seen memes that picture 2020
as simply a 'dumpster fire'....a year best just burnt and ignored. There is some truth there. But most of us, gifted
with the eyes of faith, it has been more than that. it has been a time to ask, as we always do, "how has God
been present to us" to show us what we might have otherwise missed. While we each will have our own answer
or answers, I am drawn back to the story "What Men Live By" written by Leo Tolstoy. I first came across this
short story years ago, You can access it here for your enjoyment -
http://www.insideoutsidespa.com/archive/what-men-live-by-leo-tolstoy-inside-outside.pdf (you may have to
cut and paste into your browser) It is both charming and light, serious and profound, and at only 23 pages,
brief enough not to be burdensome. Without giving too much away, in a theme that 'A Wonderful Life' was
later to reverse, an angel, for its salvation, is sent by God to Earth to learn 'What Men Live By'.At the end of the
story, here are the summary comments of the angel: I have learned that all men live not by care for themselves
but by love...I knew before that God gave life to men and desires that they should live; now I understood more
than that...I understood that God does not wish men to live apart, and therefore he does not reveal to them
what each one needs for himself, but he wishes them to live united, and therefore reveals to each of them
what is necessary for all." If you can, take 30 minutes and read it all. In 2020 I am certain that God used this
awful pandemic to teach this truth, not just to us, but a .lesson that much of the world would be able to see as
truth. I am convinced this truth being so close to the heart of the Gospel, has left many open to the fullness of
the word, now made flesh.
Alpha Program Postponement We are postponing the Alpha program until a bit later in the year, in the hope
that the increased distribution of vaccine(s), may aid in allowing more to attend. As a final note please continue
to pray for one another. It is a great gift. And as always, pray for those who have no one to pray for them. Those
are the prayers of miracles. Jesus comes and is merciful.

St. Rose Faith FormationLet’s start with two short, unrelated stories and then bring them together. First, when in college, friends of mine would sometimes go out to malls, or to the old Wednesday cruise nights on VanNuys Bl. (doesn’t that sound nostalgic) and try to see if they could get in faith conversations withthose they met.
They reported that the most difficult conversations were with people they called “Winnebago’s”after the famous Recreational Vehicles. Why did they call them Winnebago’s? Because RV’s are‘totally self contained’ -they have everything they need. Or at least they think they do. They thinkthey have the ‘world’ beat. They have everything, or at least, its only a matter of time ‘til they do. Theidea of faith, or needing others, let alone God, is the last thing on their minds. Most of know thatattitude usually doesn’t last that long. As we go through life Paul Simon’s words that no man is anisland are as true today as it has ever been.
The second story is about JRR Tolkien, the famous Catholic author of The Lord of the Rings (LOTR).He invented a term for all of human life experience, particularly the experience of faith. He called it‘the eu-catastrophe’ or the catastrophe (sickness and death that afflicts us all) that is suddenly andgloriously reversed. He summed up our lives, and particularly our infirmities this way- our lives areoften “the long slow defeat, that ends in total victory.”
The season of Advent calls us to consider the heart of both these stories. The coming of Jesuspierces both our feelings of perfection and pain - of arrogance and despair. All in a child. Jesuscomes to us, answering our human longing not to be alone, our mistaken self-satisfactions and atthe same time, removing from us any defeat. What a great and beautiful God we have.

Why it is so important to tell the truth?
As parents, we teach our children thatthe truth is important. In fact, thetruth is a critical part of the healingprocess for victim-survivors of abuse. When a victim-survivor tells the truthabout abuse that has happened tohim or her, it robs the secret of itspower and begins to break down anyfear surrounding it. This helps avictim-survivor on the path to beingfree from the effects of abuse andenables the church and otherinstitutions to take appropriate actionto keep others safe.
