SAINT RITA OF CASCIA CHURCH  3

REV. MSGR. RICHARD KREKELBERG

Dear Parishioners and Visitors,

…That You May Have FaithIn today’s Gospel passage fromSaint Mark, Jesus heals the “womanafflicted with hemorrhages” andraises up Jairus’ daughter. Theobservers of these events were“utterly astounded.” No kidding! But there we are again, Jesus’ words

from last Sunday’s Gospel reading, still ringing in our ears, “Do you notyet have faith?” As a matter of fact, Jesus told the woman suffering fromhemorrhages, who he cured,“Daughter, your faith has saved you.”

While the events of the Gospeltoday are startling and amazing, forme, the words from today’s Old Testament reading from Wisdom areeven more so:

G OD  D ID  N OT  M  AKE  D EATH . Well, if God didn’t make it, whodid? I thought God madeeverything. The reading goes on toexplain, “But by the envy of thedevil, death entered the world.”Clearly, Wisdom means to convince

us that “God formed man to beimperishable; the image of his ownnature; and furthermore, [God doesnot] “rejoice in the destruction ofthe living.” So, for Jairus, the woman with hemorrhages, and forus the fear of imminent death is but

distraction from the truth of God who is  A LL  LIFE.  And I believethat one who understands this ismuch closer to understanding St.Paul’s declaration that “Jesus is  A LL  Y ES.” (2Cor)

Perhaps in St. Paul’s words to ustoday we might be enlightenedfurther: “though he was rich, foryour sake he became poor, so thatby his poverty you might becomerich.” This is actually Jesus’ way ofsaying yes to life and no to death. Itis the same path for us, for when weare impoverished (read: humble anddetached), then we are bestpositioned to make others rich (read:loved and cared for). This is thepromotion of life, is it not? This is

when we live our faith in naturalconception to natural death, because we do not believe in death as DEATH,but rather BIRTH to eternal life.

Reality is that far more do notexperience the type of miracles

reported in today’s Gospel fromMark; far more actually lose childrento illness and tragedy; far more donot survive the illnesses that besetthem. Jesus was very clear about thereason for this: “I perform miraclesthat you may have faith.” There it isagain— F AITH. Jesus’ power overphysical illness—indeed, all hisearthly miracles—were always meantto point the way to his eventual victory over sin and death—and tohis being God, The Son. May we who have heard this Good Newstoday, see the daily miracles in life’sjourney here on Earth for what theyreally are—invitations to F AITH  inthe ultimate miracle of our owndeliverance to Heaven.

 —Msgr. Richard

 A Note from a Parishioner

Recently Msgr. Richard received a notefrom a parishioner concerned aboutseveral “scam” attempts. In both her

case and another that happened to afriend, phone calls were received thatindicated a grandson was in jail andneeded cash immediately. Fortunately, our parishioner’s response was to hangup on the caller and do nothing!

At our recent Senior Ministry luncheon(see page 7 of this Bulletin), arepresentative from the Sierra MadrePolice Department commented on thisand many similar scams out there. Theadvice was: do not engage in

conversation with the caller as you mayinadvertently give them valuable cluesto continue their scam, i.e., “Danny, isthat you; are you okay?; tell the calleryou are going to report them to yourlocal police department (and followthrough on your promise—SierraMadre Police, non-emergency calls,355-1414); and warn your friends andneighbors of the scams.

Remember, the IRS, the Police, theFire Department, or other governmentagencies never request money througha phone call—you will always be dulynotified by written letter.

Start the 4th of July with abang—at t e ndthe 8 am Mass atSt. Rita to offer

thanks for the many freedoms we enjoyin our country.

Senior Ministry Luncheon—Saturday, June 14

Thank you to the helpers who gave their time and talents to help with this event. Our guest speaker, Alena Lezano fromthe Sierra Madre Police Department, spoke to us of neighborhood safety, awareness of “scams” via phone or theinternet, and other safety-related issues. Our guests enjoyed salad from Stonefire Grill followed by a decadent dessert, recipe courtesy of Marilyn McKernan. There were many raffle prizes and four door prizes as well as a chance to win thetable decorations of potted succulents. Thanks to Marilyn McKernan for organizing this annual event and for all the work by so many to make it a success. It was a great afternoon of fellowship and fun!
