From the Pastor’s Desk…

Lord, send your Spirit and renew the face of the earth

Today is Pentecost Sunday, the great day of a fulfilled

promise. After a period of fifty days of the Resurrection of

Christ, we have come to the end of Easter Season. The first

Pentecost had a tremendous effect on the disciples of Jesus.

Likewise, if we listen to today’s readings carefully, perhaps the

same thing will happen to us. If our hearts are open, the Holy

Spirit will change us, and we will go forth from this Church

ready, more than ever, to be true disciples of Jesus and to carry

out his work in our world.

In the second reading St. Paul makes a very important

statement: “No one can say ‘Jesus is Lord’ except by the Holy

Spirit.”(1 Cor 12:3) This means that it is God himself Who en-

ables us through the Holy Spirit to recognize the lordship of

Jesus Christ.

We are reminded in the Bible that the Spirit we have re-

ceived is not the spirit of fear and timidity. According to our

Catechism, it is the Spirit that empowers us and makes

us strong Christians and soldiers of Christ (CCC 1302). This

means that we must no longer be timid Christians, but Chris-

tians who are bold enough to call God our Father.

May God help us to “Live by the Spirit,” and experience

the fruits of the Holy Spirit: “love, joy, peace, patience, kind-

ness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control” in our

daily lives.

Welcome, Fr. Joseph F. Wilson!

We welcome Fr. Joseph Wilson who has just been as-

signed by Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio to St. Nicholas of Tolen-

tine as a parochial vicar. Fr. Wilson was born on July 8, 1959

and was ordained to the priesthood in 1986. His home parish is

Our Lady of Lourdes, Queens Village. He has served at. St.

Thomas the Apostle, Woodhaven; St. Luke in Whitestone and

St. Margaret, Middle Village.

Welcome, Fr. Wilson to your new home!

God bless you,

Fr. John Francis

HELP THE POOR IN THE

APPALACHIAN MOUNTAINS Deep in the Appalachian Mountains is an area that has been hard hit by the loss of coal jobs. As the coal mining jobs continue to disappear, many of those who can are forced to leave the area, while those who cannot are elderly left to face the struggle.

St. Stephen Catholic Church distributes food, clothes, household items, cleaning materials and sanitary items to as many of these families as we are able to help. We assist with heating and utility bills for those who are unable to pay them.

The people touched by the poverty in the area are on the in-crease and our funds are all but exhausted. This is the reason we are asking for your generous help to keep this outreach program going that has been a blessing to so many in their time of need. Any donation, large or small, will be a blessing and greatly appre-

ciated.

House repairs and general up keep are also our project with the help of volunteer missionaries. There are requests from poor people who are unable to do them without help. Contribution of time and labor by voluntary missionary services are welcome and greatly appreciated.

We are suffering a loss to our parish community as well, with the economic losses to the community. We are the smallest Catholic Community within the Diocese of Lexington. Our members are retired coal miners or elderly, who are unable even to support the Church maintenance.

Donations can be sent to: St. Stephen Catholic Church Outreach 304 Central St., Cumberland, KY 40823 Phone #: 606-589-5616
