EXCERPT FROM PORT LINCOLN TIMES Port Lincoln man Brenton Mortimer will soon become the second deacon ordained for the Port Pirie Diocese, and the first from Port Lincoln. Mr Mortimer will be ordained to the Permanent Diaconate by Bishop Gregory O'Kelly at St Mary of the Angels Catholic Church on December 14 at 11am, and is inviting the community to attend. Roles of a deacon in the church include preparing parents and children for baptism or couples for weddings, conduct funerals and act as a chaplain in the community.
Mr Mortimer said for the past six years he had been working towards being ordained as a deacon. He said deacons were only starting to reappear and once ordained he would be the second for the Port Pirie Diocese and the first for Port Lincoln in the Catholic Church. "I'll be working mostly around Port Lincoln and the West Coast," he said. "I'm excited and nervous about the whole thing." Mr Mortimer said he hoped to be a chaplain in the community, including at Boston Football Club and would also do some secular work, such as in the field of mental health which he was involved in at the moment. He said the Diaconate had three parts to it, the word (proclaiming the gospel) the table (assisting in mass) and charity (serving the poor and marginalised).

we worship upon today and pay our respects to the Elders past, present and
emerging for they hold the memories, the traditions, the culture and hopes of
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’.
BLESSING OF CRIBS AND NATIVITIES
The origins of the Christmas crib date back to the life of St. Francis of
Assisi (1181-1226). He used life-size figures and live animals to help
focus people’s attention on the birth of the Christ-child.
Today in our Churches throughout the Diocese we bless our Christmas
cribs and nativities and take them back to our homes to focus our
attention on the reason for the season.

WHAT DOES ADVENT MEAN? Advent derives from the Latin adventus meaning ‘arrival’ or ‘approach’. For thousands of years the world waited for the coming of the Messiah to redeem and to save the human race, restoring mankind’s relationship to God. We, too, experience this same longing for the coming of Christ. Spiritually, we long for the coming of Christ into our hearts as the Holy Spirit draws us into ever deepening relationship with Him; we also long for Christ in his Second Coming, when He will return physically to earth—as He promised—to restore all things to Himself. Therefore the Advent season has these characteristics: It is a season of: Hopeful longing, Joyful expectation, Prayerful penance, and Spiritual preparation. Advent connects us spiritually with God's whole plan of redemption through Jesus Christ.
