Pass On the Good News! What good news? – The Good News of Jesus Christ and our Catholic faith! This fall, over 200 children and young people, grades 1-8, will sign up to learn more about Jesus and the Catholic faith. You can help them learn and grow in faith by becoming a catechist for Faith Formation (CCD). Classes are offered select Sunday mornings from October to March at the time slot of 8:50 am to 9:50 am. As you nurture the faith of our young, you will learn and grow as well! As one long-time catechist put it, “I learn so much from the children!” We provide you with training, materials, and support. Classes begin in October. Please consider stepping up to help mold the next set of "bricks" for the future foundation of our Church. Eagle Scout Project William Swicki of St. Kevin’s Troop 63 is collecting needed items for Pet Refuge, a no-kill, non-profit animal shelter. When Jesus spoke, he used simple words and he also used images which were examples taken from daily life, in order to be easily understood by all. This is why they listened to him willingly and appreciated his message which directly touched their heart. And it was not that complicated language which was difficult to understand, as that used by the Doctors of the Law of that time, which was not easily understood, was very rigid and distanced people. And with this language Jesus made the mystery of the Kingdom of God understood; it was not complicated theology. And one example is that of today's Gospel passage: the parable of the sower (cf. Mt 13:1-23).
The sower is Jesus. With this image, we can see that he pre-sents himself as one who does not impose himself, but rather offers himself. He does not attract us by conquering us, but by donating himself: he casts seeds. With patience and generosity, he spreads his Word, which is not a cage or a trap, but a seed which can bear fruit. And how can it bear fruit? If we welcome it.
Therefore, the parable concerns us especially. In fact, it speaks more of the soil than of the sower. Jesus carries out, so to speak, a "spiritual X-ray" of our heart, which is the soil on which the seed of the Word falls. Our heart, like the soil, may be good and then the Word bears fruit — and a great deal — but it can also be hard and impermeable. This happens when we hear the Word but it bounces off of us, just as on a street: it does not en-ter.
Between the good soil and the street; the asphalt — if we throw a seed on the "sanpietrini" (cobblestones), nothing grows — there are however, two intermediate types of soil which, in differ-ent amounts, we can have within us. The first, Jesus says, is rocky. Let us try to imagine it: rocky ground is a terrain that "does not have much soil" (cf. Mt 13:5), so the seed sprouts but is un-able to put down deep roots. This is how the superficial heart is: it welcomes the Lord, wants to pray, love and bear witness, but does not persevere; it becomes tired and never "takes off". It is a heart without depth, where the rocks of laziness prevail over the good soil, where love is fickle and fleeting. But whoever wel-comes the Lord only when they want to does not bear fruit.
Then, there is the last ground, the thorny one, filled with briars which choke the good plants. What do these thorns represent? "The cares of the world and the delight in riches" (v. 22), as Je-sus says explicitly. The thorns are the vices which come to blows with God, which choke his presence: above all these are the idols of worldly wealth, living avidly, for oneself, for possessions and for power. If we cultivate these thorns, we choke God's growth within us. Each of us can recognize his or her big or small thorns, the vices that inhabit the heart, those more or less deeply rooted briars that God does not like and that prevent us from having a clean heart. It is necessary to tear them out, otherwise the Word cannot bear fruit, the seed will not grow.
Dear brothers and sisters, Jesus invites us today to look inside ourselves: to give thanks for our good soil and to tend the soil that is not yet good. Let us ask ourselves if our heart is open to welcome the seed of the Word of God with faith. Let us ask our-selves if our rocks of laziness are still numerous and large; let us identify our thorns of vice and call them by name. Let us find the courage to reclaim the soil, to effect a nice conversion of our heart, bringing to the Lord in Confession and in prayer our rocks and our thorns. In doing this, Jesus, the Good Sower will be glad to carry out an additional task: purify our hearts by removing the rocks and the thorns which choke his Word. May the Mother of God, whom we remember today with the title of Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel, unparalleled in welcoming the Word of God and putting it into practice (cf. Lk 8:21), help us to purify our hearts and welcome the Lord's presence there.
Interesting Facts about Catholicism
�� The word “Catholic” was first used by Ignatius of An-tioch around the year A.D. 110. It is from the Greek word katholikos, which means “toward the whole.” Ignatius was suggesting that the Church is a gift of-fered by Christ to all people.
�� The incense used in the Catholic Church symbolizes prayers rising to heaven. It is also used to bless and purify.
�� The fish, or ICHTHUS, is the symbol used by early Christians to identify themselves in times of persecu-tion. In Greek, ICHTHUS (ΙΧΘΥΣ) is a monogram for the first five letters of the words “Jesus Christ Son of God, Savior.”
�� The rosary is a primary signature of catholic devotion. The word “rosary” means “garland of roses.” The rose is one of the flowers used to symbolize the Virgin Mary, and the prayer of the rosary is very closely as-sociated with her.
�� Catholics believe that anyone can baptize in an emer-gency situation (such as a car wreck). Any person, Catholic or not, can pour the water and say the words. The only requirement is to follow the wishes of the person you are baptizing.
�� The Catholic Church has seven sacraments (baptism, penance, confirmation, holy orders, the Eucharist (Holy Communion), matrimony, and anointing of the sick). The word “sacrament” is from the Latin sacramentum, or “solemn oath.” Sacraments are symbols that connect the visible and invisible dimensions.
�� Catholic health care institutions serve almost 80 mil-lion patients a year in the United States. Catholic hos-pitals constitute more than 10% of all hospitals in the country and receive about 15% of all hospital admissions.
�� Catholic hospitals employ almost 750,000 people, about 15% of all hospital employees in the United States. Their total payroll is over $20 billion.

June Service: What's better in the hot summer than a nice cold refreshing drink? We are collecting powdered lemonade and iced tea mixes for McAuley House to serve throughout the summer. The staff at McAuley house was very grateful for the donations last year and the supplies we donated managed to last them throughout the summer months. Boxes are located at the entrances of the church. Be generous with our final service project of the year – let's end strong!!

Wedding Anniversary Celebration The Office of Marriage Preparation & Enrichment is spon-soring the annual wedding anniversary celebration honor-ing couples of the Diocese who will be observing their 25th, 40th, 50th and 50+ years anniversaries in 2018. The celebration will be held on Sunday, September 23, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at the Cathedral of SS. Peter & Paul in Providence. It will include Mass, renewal of marriage vows, a personalized certificate for each couple and a re-ception for the couples and their families. Bishop Thomas J. Tobin will be the main celebrant. At Bishop Hendricken High School Our 11th annual Christmas Bazaar is in the works and we hope you will join us in making it the best one yet! Handmade crafts are needed. The 10th Annual Colorectal Cancer Awareness 5K Walk/Run will take place on August 5th at Warwick City Park. To register online go to www.VoicesOfRI.org.
