First Reading: Genesis 18:1-10a The Lord appeared to Abraham, who saw three men standing near his tent. Sensing they were messengers, he hurriedly brought them food and water to refresh themselves. Upon leaving, the men told him that they would visit in a year, at which time his childless wife Sarah would have a son. Second Reading: Colossians 1:24-28 Paul discusses the suffering Christ endured for his Church. He describes his willingness to also endure suffering in Jesus' name. Paul hopes that through his sacrifices, many people will be-come complete in Jesus. Gospel: Luke 10:38-42 Jesus was welcomed into the home of a wom-an named Martha. She complained to Jesus that her sister Mary sat listening to him instead of helping with the tasks of entertaining. Jesus told Martha that her sister had chosen the more important task, and should be allowed to listen.

A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUN-DAY READINGS HIS WORD TODAY

by Rev. William J. Reilly

Compassion The Church prays for all who have had abortions, and welcomes them

back in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. At www.AbortionTestimonies.com, you can read, in their own words, the experi-ences of women and men who have lost children to abortion. One woman writes, “My abortion was very painful, physical-ly and mentally. It affected me in the worst way. I felt very guilty. I couldn’t look at any kids. I know I won’t ever do it again. I tell other people how it felt and what I felt like after I did it and hope that they won’t do the same thing I did. It gave me a totally different view on life.”

“Abraham saw three men standing nearby. When he saw them, he ran from the entrance of the tent to greet them; and bowing to the ground, he said, ‘Sir, if I may ask you this favor, please do not go on past your

servant. Let some water be brought, that you may bathe your feet, and then rest yourselves under the tree. Now that you have come this close to your servant, let me bring you a little food, that you may refresh yourselves; and af-terward you may go on your way…and he waited on them under the tree while they ate.”

During the hot, hazy, dusty days of summer we find the Genesis story welcome relief. Don’t we all seek some help at this time of the year, a gentle breeze, a quiet fan or air conditioning? Imagine how welcome was this encounter with Abraham.

A fundamental principle in the Christian life is found in the virtue of hospitality. Saint Benedict likened it to prayer. Jesus found it in the home of Martha, Mary and Lazarus. We have often experienced it in visits, being welcomed into a new parish community or home. We can offer this gift to others at little cost to ourselves. The first to come to mind are immigrants and refu-gees.

Jesus fled to Egypt following no acceptance at the inn. Those fleeing the ravages of war, gangs and poverty at our borders, might be the God hidden from recognition in the book of Genesis. Our gift of hospitality reveals the compassion of Jesus Christ to others.
