- Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J.S. Paluch Co., Inc.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Once the way was cleared for additional Eucharistic Prayers, those who were appointed to compose them had to look deep within the tradition for sources. One of the prescriptions for new prayers was that they be “unencumbered by useless repitition.” From the start, therefore, the writers knew that the old Roman Canon, which had the priest bowing and crossing himself many times in a long, complex prayer, was not a model of simplicity. Aside from the prayers treasured by Eastern Christians, there is an obvious model from ancient Rome. For about a hundred years now, the historical text “Apostolic Tradition” has shed some light for us on the shadowy shape of worship in the early church. In it, its author, Hippolytus, took care to record the actual texts of worship used at the time. He himself has a shadow side, since he was so ardently conservative in his tastes that he broke ties with the Bishop of Rome and became first in the line of history’s anti-popes. At the eleventh hour, however, he reconciled with his enemies and actually died a martyr. In fact, he was shipped off to the Sardinian mines as a slave with the true pope as his companion in chains. Because his tussle with the pope was over theological innovations and not liturgical texts, we are sure that his account of the style of Eucharistic Prayer in the third century is accurate. It forms the core of today’s Eucharistic Prayer II. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Knights of Columbus Council 7241

The Knights of Columbus is a worldwide Catholic organization for men 18 years of age and older. We are Catholic men of faith and charitable action.

Thanks to the efforts of Fr. Michael J. McGivney, assistant pastor of St. Mary’s Church in New Haven and some of his parishioners, the Connecticut state legislature on March 29, 1882, officially chartered the Knights of Columbus as a fraternal benefit society. The Order is still true to its founding principles of charity, unity and fraternity.

We proudly offer our support to our Priests and our Church. We are actively involved in the Parish and Church functions. We offer assistance to outside organizations within out community as well. Charity is the first principle of our order.

If you would like to be a part of an international organization of nearly 2 million Catholic men whose principal work involves helping others in need, we’d like to meet you and invite you to join us. Brother Knights are easily recognized at Church wearing their Council Badge. Any Brother Knight may help direct you on your quest to Knighthood.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word

During the Sunday Mass at 9am and 11am,

volunteers in our parish community offer their time and talent to serve the children ages 4-10 by proclaiming the Word of God to them at their level of understanding. The lector/minister, accompanied by another adult, comes forward to receive the book of the readings from the presider and leads the children from the assembly to a classroom for the sharing of the Word. This usually takes between 15-20 minutes and the children return to the assembly before the presentation of the gifts.

A Reflection from Deacon Dennis Merino

…”Great is your Faith”…

How incredible it would be to hear Jesus speak these words to me. The mother in the Gospel was an outcast to the Jewish People, a Canaanite woman. Despised, rejected, loathed and yet she did not let this deter her. She had heard of the “Great” healer and beseeched Him to have pity on her, to heal her daughter. Try to imagine what was going on in her mind. She is among people that despise her. She overcomes her fear and shows great courage to ask The Son of David to have pity on her. Even after Jesus rejects her …”I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” She does not give up. She humbles herself and pays homage to Jesus. Her love of her child and the hope that Jesus instills in her gives her this great courage to the point that she impresses Jesus. He tells her …”O woman, great is your faith!...” What a profound exclamation coming from the Christ for one of His creation. We all know of a mother’s instinct to protect her children and fight for them even to the point of death. This is natural. Jesus uses this character to give us an example of how we are to hold on to our Faith even in the midst of great turmoil and challenge. We are called to never let go, to never give up, to persevere, and to have Great Faith.

Vocations Cross Thank you to Tony and Theresa Luza for taking the Cross in July. Prayers for Ed and Annette Denison

as they will take the Cross in August. If you have any questions please call Bob or Margie Coffman at 916.354.1744 with questions.

Electronic Offering Program (EOP) How To…

We have all heard of instances of data breaches and in some cases, we have been affected by them. If your regular donation is processed electronically through debit or credit card, EFT Corporation needs to know if your card information is up to date. To check, visit our parish website www.stjoseph-elkgrove.net , on the r ight hand side of the home page you will see an “Online Giving” section. Please click on the EFT Corporation link. This action will take you to the St. Vincent de Paul page where you will be able to make the changes as to updating your card, expiration dates, etc. You’ll know you are directed to the correct website if you see a picture of our Mission Church. Complete the boxes to either start or make changes to your offerings, enter your contact and payment information and you will be set. This is a secure method. Once you have completed this step, you will get a reply e-mail to the e-mail you have provided from EFT Corporation confirming your request. If you prefer to correct this information manually, there is an option to print out the form and make the necessary changes; Ruth can assist you with this.

Please Remember…

If you or a loved one is unable to attend mass due to an illness, hospital stay, assisted care living, nur-sing home rehabilitation or have a physical limitati-on, you may request that communion be brought to them by a Eucharistic Minister. Please call the office with any questions and/or to make arrangements. Thank you.

A Good Prayer

A good prayer, though often used, is still fresh and fair in the eyes and ears of heaven.
