Why should we give money to the church?

This past week I was speaking with someone who wanted to join the parish but was a little hesitant because they were afraid of the financial commitment I would require of them. Of course, this lead me to addressing this VERY important issue in this week’s bulletin article. I am very clear and serious about a few things in Church-life, the first is that the Eucharist should be the “source and summit” of our faith. That is a fancy way of saying that coming to Mass and truly celebrating the Holy Eucharist, should be the center of our lives, our faith, our mission as Saint Joseph Church and our foundation as the Universal Catholic Church. And the second is that preaching about money is a big no-no for me. I am sure you have often heard the cliché “Money is not everything” to which I am quickly reminded “Neither is being without it!” So we might ask ourselves; can money buy us happiness? To which I say “yes!” However, only if we spend it on the correct things. It has been proven statistically that when you spend money on others, as opposed to ourselves, that our level of happiness actually increases. Many people have often heard me say that “What you give in church on weekends is between you and God. But, that you give, is between you and me” (especially for those who have children in Faith Formation). So the simple question we are left with is why should we give money to the Church? I think if you ask most people (especially those who do not come to church) what the church talks about the most, they would say “money!” And, although I know priests that constantly harangue their faithful about giving more money in the collection, in my twenty-plus years of being a priest, I have never preached or ask for money directly and money has never been a problem, no matter whether I was assigned to the poorest of parishes or those who actually are able to pay their bills and save some money. So back to the question of why should we give money to our Church? The simple and shortest answer is that electricity, heat, air conditioning, hosts, wine, candles and flowers are not given away free, just because we are a church. But giving to our local church goes beyond just paying the bills. I would like you to consider four (4) reasons why we should all give to our parish churches: 1.) Jesus told us to do so. In Matthew 6:2, Jesus says: “When

you give alms…” notice He does not say “if” or “maybe” or “possibly” but “when!” I think that Jesus tried to intimately link prayer and generosity to our almsgiving.

2.) Because we believe in the dignity of everyone (regardless of race, creed, color or way of life) especially the weak and those in need, we have the obligation of supporting them. In other words “other people matter!” Here at Saint Joseph Church, one can easily see the concrete ways how we put these words into action; by feeding the poor in our Saint Mother Teresa Food Pantry, in clothing the naked in our Thrift Shop and how we will care for our elderly and those in need (by the soon to be opened Guardian Angel Day Care Center in the school). We are involved in these great ministries, not because we have nothing better to do, but because it comes from our mission as a Catholic Church, as a community of faith which is called to follow the Corporal Works of Mercy by “feeding the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty, clothing the naked and sheltering the homeless.”

3.) Because giving should always be a sign of our gratitude to God and not guilt. Giving $1 or $5 might alleviate our guilt; but we should ask ourselves “Is not everything we have a gift from God?” And should we not give something back to Him for His generosity towards us?

4.) Because we model our lives after that of Jesus’. In 2 Corinthians 8:9, Saint Paul says: “You know the generous grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. Though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, so that by His poverty he could make you rich.” Therefore, Jesus is the model of what our giving should look like. Are we not supposed to be more like Christ in our daily lives? We are not just called to follow Him in word, but in deed as well.

That is why Saint James reminds us: “What use is it, if someone says they have faith but they have no works?” (James 2: 14). So if we truly want to follow the example of Christ (hence the name Christians) then we are called to do so, not just in our prayers but also in our deeds, deeds that make ourselves generous like Christ. When we think about it, were we not given “things” in our lives for a reason? We are ALL called to be more like Jesus who was rich and made Himself poor for our sake. That is why we are not to give out of our surplus (an extra or old jacket in the closet for the poor, an extra or outdated can of food for the hungry). We are asked to give out of our substance (from the essence of who we are). We need to be thoughtful givers. The person who gives the most does not mean they give the best. Rather, having a plan of giving based upon prayer, our ability to give and our generosity, is the best recipe for giving. Whatever is left in our wallets at the end of the week is not a thoughtful gift.

According to the Scriptures, (which our Protestant sisters and brothers follow faithfully and is the reason why such small congregations can support the minister, his wife and their entire family) we are called to give 10% of our income (that is where the notion of tithing comes from). As Catholics, we are taught that we should give “according to our means.” There is not a number or price tag attached to this idea. And no matter if you are rich or poor, gainfully employed, retired or even out of work, everyone has something to give; our time, our talent and our treasure. You may have nothing left to give, but you always have your heart and that is the greatest gift to give. Pray about it. Ask God to make us not only grateful and joyful givers, but thoughtful givers as well. The Lord said He loves a “cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7). Why not make ourselves a little more happy this week and give a little more to the Lord?

So coming full circle, becoming a member of our parish family has nothing to do with money, it has to do with doing what

Christ commands us to do. Please know that I join the rest of our parish family in having a parish budget envelope myself

and give, not from my surplus but from my essence. It is my prayerful contribution to all the good work that we are able to do in the name of Christ. Won’t you join me in this wonderful

Christian endeavor? Maybe our lives might be filled with a little more joy as well!!

Enjoy the long week!

No more second collections

As a result of your great generosity, we eliminated almost all second collections for the past two years. Because of this great success, we will continue this collection again this year. Each family should have already received a letter with a special envelope requesting a one time (yearly) contribution of one hundred dollars ($100 or more) for this collection. I am asking that every parish family participate in this program. Last year only 1/3 of the registered families participated and yet, it affects 100% of the parish. Please be part of this endeavor even if only a small amount. Please read this week’s bulletin’s article and consider a prayerful donation to your church. Thank you for all that you do for your parish family!

Saturday cleaners

Thank you to the parishioners of Saint Joseph Church for putting a smile

on the children’s face that are undergoing treatment at Goryeb Children’s Hospital

in Morristown. Because of your generosity, we delivered 270 boxes of Band-Aids

last week. The children loved the character Band-Aids.

Due to the unprecedented requests for

assistance from Catholic Charities’ food

pantries and in order to fulfill our obligations

to the poor, Bishop Serratelli has requested a

Diocesan-wide food collection in all

parishes and agencies on the Feast of Corpus

Christi, Saturday and Sunday, June 2nd and 3rd.

Our parish has been asked to

provide canned meats (e.g. Spam, tuna fish,

chicken, etc.). Our own Saint Mother Teresa

Food Pantry will receive a portion of these

donations as well.

Please mark the weekend of June 2-3 as the
