Welcome
Dear Friends, I am pleased to announce that Father James Ojo has been appointed Parochial Vicar for the Canton Catholic Community. His appointment is effective September 1. Father James is native of Nigeria where he received his elementary, secondary and college education as well as his seminary formation. In fact this year he is celebrating the 25th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood. He has been serving as a hospital chaplain at the Brigham and Women's hospital since 2013 and assisting at St. Mary’s Parish in Brookline. Father James and I will reside in the rectory at St. John’s and the administrative for offices for both parishes will remain at St. Gerard rectory. Father James will introduce himself to our community through social media and the bulletin in the weeks ahead. I have assured him that he count on a very warm welcome from the people of Canton. August 9 ~ Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time God is present with us always. If we wait to be adrift upon a stormy sea in order to see that God is present with us, we will miss out on the grace and goodness that currently surrounds us. God ’s love is at work in us, in every sacrament; in every moment of prayer; in every gathering for worship; in every act of kindness. He is in the tiniest whisper, and in the outstretched hand of another.
Saturday, August 15 ~ The Feast of the Assumption
Because it falls on a Saturday this year, the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is not a Holy Day of Obligation. The 4pm Mass we will celebrate on August 15 is the Vigil Mass for the 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time. (See inside for a prayer to Mary)

Recently we have experienced an increase in in-terest and sales at St. Mary Cemetery. We current-ly have single in-ground burial lots and columbari-um niches available for purchase. Our side-by-side double lots are also available in lesser quanti-ty. If you are considering purchasing lots at St. Mary’s, this is a good time to view what we have available. Pre-need cemetery lot purchase provides peace of mind, comfort and assurance to you and your family. The 28th Annual Pope St. John XXIII National Seminary Golf Tournament is scheduled for Monday, August 31st, at The Weston Golf Club. This premier charity event is held to benefit the educational program for the seminarians. Tuition covers only half the cost of educating a seminarian and the proceeds from this tournament will help bridge the gap and keep the cost of educating them affordable. Dear Friends: Once again this year, I will be running in Falmouth At Home, as a fundraiser for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, in honor of my late sister Jill. Due to the generosity of family, friends and parishioners, we have raised over $125,000 these past eleven years for the Jimmy Fund. This year, runners will be mapping out their own race course on or around August 16 instead of running as a team in the Falmouth Road Race. I plan on running 8 miles in my hometown of Canton and continuing my efforts to support the great work of the Dana-Farber in research and patient care.
