ST. FLORENCE, Laywoman December 1

Page 6 November 29, 2015 The First Sunday of Advent

My dear parishioners, HAPPY NEW YEAR! Yes, this is New Year’s Day for the Church, the First Sunday of Advent and the beginning of the new liturgical “Year of Grace 2016.” As we begin the new year we also make a shift from Cycle B to Cycle C in the lectionary. This year the Gospel readings will primar-

ily be taken from the Gospel of Luke. The Evangelist Luke wrote two volumes of scripture under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the Gospel and Acts of the Apostles. In them he shows how the salvation promises made to Israel are accomplished in Jesus and are now extended to the Gentiles as well. These texts contain the stories of love which the followers of the Lord Jesus are to make present in the world today. This charge is one which Christians must be at-tentive to until the second coming of the Lord Jesus. In today’s second lection from the Apostle Paul’s first Letter to the Thessalonians we read: May the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all, just as we have for you, so as to strengthen your hearts, to be blameless in holiness before our God and Father at the com-ing of our Lord Jesus with all his holy ones.” With the coming of Advent we find the leave-taking of November, the month of the faithful departed. During this past month we have prayed for the dead and I know many have visited the graves of loved ones in our parish ceme-tery. Since 1977 Mrs. Eileen Traino has served as the “manager” of our parish cemetery working under the direction of the last four pastors. Since 1999 she has done this work as a volunteer donating her time, energy and love for the place which we hold sacred. Eileen has informed me of her retirement from this ministry effective December 1st. I know that you join with me in expressing our sincere thanks and appreciation to Mrs. Traino for her labor. We pray that the Lord will continue to bless her and her loved ones. I have asked Mrs. Diane Boykow to assume the duties of “manager” to replace Eileen. I am most grateful to her for agreeing to take on this responsibility in helping me care for our parish cemetery. Please note that all cemetery matters should be shared with the parish office and that I am the one who is responsible for the cemetery and all other matters related to Saint Cecilia Parish (That’s why I make the big bucks!! LOL). The new year brings with it a lot of activities and excitement, just check our bulletin for all that is going on. All of this is in anticipation for the Feast of the Incarnation, the Holy Nativity of our Lord, God and Savior, Jesus Christ. So don’t be left out in the cold, come into the warmth of Christ’s love and participate in the many happen-ings going on at Saint Cecilia’s. Happy New Year! (liturgically speaking!), Father Zig

ST. FLORENCE was the daughter of a Roman colonist who was residing in Asia Minor on the road that led from Frigia to Seleucia. St. Hilary of Poitiers met her during a stop on his journey toward Seleucia where the Synod of 359 was to be held. Florence requested Baptism from the holy bishop and followed him on his return to Poitiers the next year. She then retired to Comble, Vienne, France, where she led the life of a hermit. She communed with God day and night, practicing much penance and combating the assaults of the devil. Finally worn out by here labors, she died in 366 at twenty-nine years of age. Her relics were transferred to the Cathedral of Poitiers in the 11th century. PRAYER: God, You inspired St. Florence to strive for perfect charity and so attain Your Kingdom at6 the end of her pilgrimage on earth. Strengthen us through her intercession that we may advance rejoicing in the way of love. Amen Taken from, Lives of the Saints, Catholic Booking Publishing Company, 1999 New Jersey
