TRADITION The premier poet of the English lan-guage, Geoffrey Chaucer, intro-duced one of his most beloved char-acters, the “Wife of Bath,” by this telling remark: “Husbands at church door she had five.” Four times wid-

owed, she was setting off on a pilgrimage, notably without number five. The church door is a curious detail, pointing to the fourteenth-century wedding custom of marrying on the porch of the parish church. The goal was to give maxi-mum publicity to the consent of the groom and bride, and so consent was moved from the bride’s home to a public venue. The priest would stand in the doorway and begin by sprinkling the couple with holy water. He needed to make sure they weren’t too closely related and give them some instruction. He would direct the groom to pay the bride’s family a dowry, and then announce the monetary amounts to the interested passersby. Only then would the guests enter the church for the wedding Mass, during which the bride and groom would hold lighted candles. The gradual move from home to church and the shift from the bride’s father to the priest’s authority helped to protect the freedom of brides who weren’t quite as confident as the Wife of Bath. —Rev. THE LORD OF LIFE At this bountiful time of year, our Sunday read-ings teem with life and abundance. Both the first reading, from the book of Wisdom, and the Gospel passage from Mark assure us that God did not make death or even will us to be ill. Illness and death en-tered the world through the presence of evil, the Wis-dom author tells us. Mark’s stories of Jesus healing a hemorrhaging woman and resuscitating a dead little girl make it clear that Jesus is from God. As the Son of God he does not will that anyone suffer illness or death. In the face of such power, the second reading, from Paul’s Second Letter to the Corinthians, pro-vides a stark contrast. Jesus, who could raise the dead to new life, “though he was rich, for your sake he became poor” (2 Corinthians 8:9). Our gift of new life from Christ demands our response in charity.

The past two weeks we discussed the foundation of the Knights of Columbus and their charitable works. This week we will focus on the actions you can take to join us and become a part of this effort. Through his support of community and Church, he will form friendships with his fellow Knights that can last a lifetime. Lời Chúa: Mc 5, 21-43

"Hỡi em bé, Ta bảo em hãy chỗi dậy". * Suy Niệm: Qua đoạn Tin Mừng trên, ta thấy cả hai việc chữa lành đều do được chạm tới Chúa. Đức Giêsu là Thiên Chúa. Ngài có uy quyền trên mọi thế lực: Bệnh tật và cả sự chết nữa. Nhờ lòng tin của Giairô mà con gái ông được cứu sống, và cũng nhờ lòng tin vào Đức Giêsu mà người đàn bà bị băng huyết được chữa lành. Niềm tin, lòng khiêm nhường của Giairô và người đàn bà đã cho họ được điều họ mong ước.

* Cầu Nguyện: Lạy Chúa Giêsu, mỗi khi chúng con được rước Chúa, chúng con được chạm tới Chúa. Ước chi mọi tật nguyền trong chúng con được lành mạnh. Chúng con dâng hiến Chúa trọn con người chúng con. Xin Chúa ở cùng chúng con luôn mãi. Amen.

Chúng ta biết gì về các Hiệp sĩ Columbus?

Đây là phần thứ ba của loạt bài chúng tôi giới thiệu đến qúy vị về các Hiệp Sĩ Columbus và Hội Đồng 7309 tại địa phuơng. Trong hai tuần vừa qua, chúng tôi đã nói về sự hình thành của Hội và các công trình từ thiện. Tuần này chúng tôi sẽ chú trọng về những gì bạn cần biết để gia nhập Hội và trở thành một phần của nỗ lực này.

Là một thành viên của Hội Hiệp Sĩ Columbus, bạn không những chỉ tăng cường đức tin của mình trong lúc này và bây giờ. Qua những đóng góp cho cộng đồng và giáo xứ, bạn còn có cơ hội để tạo tình bạn lâu dài với những Hiệp sĩ khác. Và bạn cũng có thể làm một điều gì đó đặc biệt cho giáo xứ của mình, cho cộng đồng và ngay cả cho các thế hệ sau.

Như nhiều công trình tốt mà các hiệp sĩ Columbus đã làm trong thập niên qua, chúng tôi có thể làm hơn với sự giúp đỡ và cộng tác của bạn. Nên ghi danh vào cuối tuần này và đến tham dự với chúng tôi vào ngày 1 tháng 7, để chúng tôi giới thiệu đến bạn các Hiệp sĩ và gỉai đáp những thắc mắc làm thế nào bạn có thể đóng góp một bàn tay vào sự phát triển của cộng đồng và giáo xứ của mình.

Thánh Irênê, Giám mục, tử đạo Tự do tiến đến Cử chỉ của người đàn bà chạm đến gấu áo của Chúa Giêsu và cử chỉ của Chúa Giêsu cầm lấy tay đứa bé gái. Lời của Đức Kitô đã nâng cô bé dậy, làm người ta có thể hiểu cách tượng trưng như một sự dữ, như một sự bất khả đến với cương vị trưởng thành của mình; lời của Đức Kitô làm cho người phụ nữ ra khỏi cái vô danh của mình để nói lên "tất cả sự thật", và khám phá ra tiềm lực ơn cứu rỗi mà bà đang mang trong mình: "Đức Tin của bà đã cứu bà". Như thế cũng có nghĩa là Đức Kitô đã trả lại cho mỗi người trên đây cái bản vị duy nhất của họ, với lịch sử của họ: Lịch sử của sự dữ, nhưng cũng là của quyền sống của họ, của khả năng vượt qua sự sợ hãi và nỗi bất hạnh. Khi đã được nhìn nhận và viếng thăm như vậy, họ có khả năng lấy lại vị trí của mình trong cộng đồng những kẻ sống và những người tin.

Vậy ai có thể chất vấn chúng ta với tư cách là chi thể của Thân Mình Đức Kitô và là kẻ tham dự vào sự sống của Người? Chúng ta sẽ tiến đến với ai và chúng ta để cho ai tiến đến với chúng ta? Chúng ta sẽ tránh xa ai và tại sao? Lời của chúng ta thuộc loại nào: Một lời cáo lỗi kẻ khác và làm cho người ta bị đóng băng trong tư tưởng đạo đức, hay một lời kêu gọi tới cái tốt hơn cái kẻ khác đang mang trong mình? Vì chúng ta chẳng được gọi để đón nhận và chuyển tải sự sống sao?

Vào Thánh Lễ Vọng Phục Sinh vừa qua, chúng ta còn ghi nhớ nghi thức trang trọng dành cho 22 Dự Tòng lãnh nhận các Bí Tích: Rửa Tội, Thêm Sức và Thánh Thể, để trở nên nghĩa tử của Chúa, thành phần của Giáo Hội. Thật là một hồng ân cho Cộng Đoàn Giáo Xứ chúng ta. Đó là công sức tìm kiếm, giới thiệu các học viên mới của Quí Ông Bà, Anh Chị Em. Đó cũng là một vinh dự cho Ban Giáo Lý Dự Tòng hân hạnh làm việc cho Vườn Nho của Chúa Kitô.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Muchos hispanos que vivimos en Estados Unidos somos personas bilingües. Podemos leer la Palabra de Dios en inglés o español. Por ejemplo, el texto de Juan 21:15-19, en el que Jesús le pregunta a Pedro si lo ama. El texto en inglés nos dice que Jesús le pregunta tres veces: Peter, do you love me? Pedro le responde: Lord, you know that I love you, mientras que en español le dice: “Señor, tú sabes que te quiero”. La diferencia es casi imperceptible, pero importante. El texto original fue escrito en griego y usaba dos palabras que significan amor, ágape (amor que se sacrifica) y fileo (amor fraterno). En inglés, Jesús y Pedro usan la misma palabra, love, mientras en español Jesús dos veces pre-gunta por “amor”, y Pedro responde con “querer”. La terce-ra vez, Jesús se acopla a Pedro y sólo pregunta en torno al “querer”, reconociendo que en ese momento, Pedro no puede darle más que eso. Jesús le asegura que algún día Pedro sería capaz del amor ágape entregando su vida por él. EL SEÑOR DE LA VIDA En este tiempo tan fecundo del año nuestras lecturas domini-cales rebosan con vida y abundancia. Tanto la primera lectura, del libro de la Sabiduría, como la tercera del Evangelio de san Marcos nos aseguran que Dios no creó la muerte, ni quiere que suframos de ninguna enfermedad. Fue por la envidia del diablo que la muerte entró al mundo, según nos dice el Sabio. Y lo que san Marcos nos cuenta sobre la curación de la hemorroisa y cómo revivió la hija de Jairo nos muestran claramente que Jesús viene de Dios. Como Hijo de Dios, Jesús no quiere que nadie sufra enfermedad ni muerte. Pero en el contexto de tanto poder, la segunda lectura, de la segunda carta de san Pablo a los corintios, nos presenta un fuerte contraste. Jesús, que puede levantar a los muertos a una nueva vida, "siendo rico se hizo pobre por ustedes" (2 Corintios 8:9).
