PLEASE SHARE YOUR TIME AND TREASURE

Sunday Stewardship ~ Due to an early Bulletin deadline Stewardship figures for Nov. 05, 2017 will be published on

Nov.19, 2017.

“As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of

God’s varied grace” (1 Pt 4:10) What identifies a steward?

Safeguarding material and human resources and using them responsibly are one answer, so is generous giving of time, talent, and treasure. But being a Christian steward means more. As

Christian stewards, we receive God’s gifts gratefully, cultivate them responsibly, share them lovingly in justice with others, and return them with increase

to the Lord.

F rom the Pastor’s Desk; Today marks the end of National Vocation Awareness week for the United States, but not the end to our efforts to promote, pray for and seek out

vocations to ministry, coworkers in the vineyard, especially priestly ministry for our local church. Each of us responds to God’s call in our own way through the life choices we make, the priorities that mark our daily activities. In Paul’s letter to the Romans, 16: 3-27, he intro-duces us to many co-workers, Prisca and Aquila who risked their lives for him. Epaenetus, Mary, Andronicus and Junia, Ampliatus, Urbanus and others; these men and women who received the Good News of the Gospel and put it into practice in their own communities,

supporting Paul and furthering the mission of the early faith community, the early church.

I n our own day and age, that is not much different from Paul’s time, people are always pulled in two direc-tions, one to take care of themselves and others or become so obsessed with work there is little time for

God or others. We can become too involved with athletics, hobbies, or other activities that limit our pursuit of happiness and wholeness through prayer, reflection and even meditation. Every Christian seeks a balance between the two, taking care of oneself and taking care of others.

F rom the USCCB vocational awareness source the author offers these thoughts: “God has given us gifts and talents to serve others and to glorify God.“ Our fulfillment, our happiness, is the greatest when we

live for others. It is good to ask ourselves from time to time, how much time and money do I contribute to others? If my basic needs are satisfied, at what point do I have enough? What is it that I am looking for in life? The specific response from each person is different. But the overarching concern is the same. “Where your treasure is, there is also your heart.” (Mt 6:21) Our hearts were made for love – love of God and love for others. When our hearts are at peace, then we have found true happiness. It is then that the words of Jesus will ring true, “you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings.”

E ach of us has a vocation to serve God and others, but we also need to pray for those people who specifically may have a call from God to serve in the church, to lead it, guide it, and be servants of the

people, to pray with people, celebrate the sacraments and continue the mission of the church. Who have you asked, “How is God calling you to serve people in the church and in the community?”

Mass of Consolation

There will be a Mass of Consolation on Thursday, November 16th at 7:30 p.m.

in the McKean Church. This Mass is for anyone who has experienced any

kind of loss this past year, the death of a family member,

the loss of a job, the loss of a pet, the loss of a relationship or any other kind of loss. Let us pray together that we might receive God’s healing peace. During the Mass we will read the

names of those people who have died this past year, parishioners and the names of family members who

died in other places.

In addition, all those present will have the opportunity to light a vigil candle to lift up your special personal

prayer, need or request for the consolation you seek. Please come, so that we can pray together and share

in the light, peace and hope of the Lord.

Disciples as Stewards

Let us begin with being a disciple - a follower of our Lord Jesus Christ. As members of the Church, Jesus calls us to be disciples. This has astonishing implications: • Mature disciples make a conscious decision to

follow Jesus, no matter what the cost. • Christian disciples experience conversion - life shaping changes of mind and heart - and commit their very selves to the Lord. • Christian stewards respond in a particular way to the

call to be a disciple. Stewardship has the power to shape and mold our understanding of our lives and the way in which we live.

Jesus’ disciples and Christian stewards recognize God as the origin of life, giver of freedom, and source of all things. We are grateful for the gifts we have received and are eager to use them to show our love for God and for one another. We look to the life and teaching of Je-sus for guidance in living as Christian stewards. A summary of the U.S. Bishop’s Pastoral Letter on Stewardship
