Happy Easter to you and yours! Our Easter Season lasts until Pentecost Sunday, which this year is May 23rd, traditionally celebrated fifty days after the celebration of Easter Sunday. In this Easter season, we remember the saving action of Christ’s Resurrection and the events that followed which St Luke details in the Acts of the Apostles, which is found after the four Gospel accounts in the New Testament of the Bible.
Due to many factors, including the craziness of the pandemic and its challenges – I made the decision last
summer to move our annual Forty Hours celebration to the week of our Saint’s Patronal Feast Day which is April 21st each year. So, we will begin Forty Hours on Monday following the Daily Mass at 8:30 am. I will ask our parishioners to do their best to commit to at least a half hour before the Blessed Sacrament exposed on the altar Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. Exposition will begin each day at 9 am and continue through the celebration of Evening Prayer Monday & Tuesday at 7:00 pm, and Wednesday we will have Mass at 7:00 pm to properly commemorate our great patron, Saint Anselm of Canterbury.
A little bit about our great parish patron: this great Bishop and Doctor of the Church was born in, where only the best saints came from, Italy around 1033 AD. He was born in Northern Italy, in the town of Aosta to a royal family of German blood (Lombard). His father was not of great status within the royal caste, and lost some prominence due to political issues in northern Italy. So, Anselm, in his twenties, left home and traveled to France, to a monastery of Benedictine foundation. Later he would be appointed the head of the Abbey at Bec, and ordained a bishop of the local region of France. He would at this time compose and write his two best known works, the Monologion and Proslogion. These two documents focus on the understanding of God and our relationship to Him. He then composed a series of dialogues on the nature of truth, free will, and the fall of Satan. He then would travel across the English Channel and visit his good friend Lanfranc who was then Archbishop of Canterbury. This is how, eventually through the normal events of politics and other human conflicts, he would be appointed a successor of Lanfranc on the 25th of September 1093. As archbishop, St. Anselm maintained his monastic ideals, including stewardship, prudence, and proper instruction, prayer and contemplation. St Anselm worked for reform and for the interests of His Archdiocese in Canterbury. As such, he repeatedly took advantage of expedient moments to press the English monarchy for concessions and support of the reform agenda. His principled opposition to royal prerogatives over the Church, meanwhile, twice led to his exile from England. Our great patron was exiled one time by the English Monarchy, and would return on the request of King Henry II of England. Then he would be exiled in the midst of a dispute with English clerics and the King back to Italy. He, in the midst of these two exiles would write his most well-known work, Cur Deus Homo (Why did God become Man?). Anselm would eventually return to England as an older man and die during Holy Week 1109. He would be buried in the great medieval Cathedral of Canterbury, which burned in the 1170’s, and his remains were lost. Today it is not exactly known where they are – somewhere in the location of the Cathedral that stands there today. Our patron Saint Anselm has been called "the most luminous and penetrating intellect between St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas". He held in his many writings that faith necessarily precedes reason, but that reason can expand upon faith: "And I do not seek to understand that I may believe but believe that I might understand. For this too I believe since, unless I first believe, I shall not understand…” In his work Prosologion we find his famous phrase “Faith seeking Understanding”. His motto is intended "an active love of God seeking a deeper knowledge of God".[152] Once the faith is held fast, however, he argued an attempt must be made to demonstrate its truth by means of reason: "To me, it seems to be negligence if, after confirmation in the faith, we do not study to understand that which we believe". St Anselm firmly believed that faith is found once we begin to study and understand the world and those around us – finding God in the world and through natural reason. Our great patron was canonized in 1163 on the request of another great Archbishop of Canterbury – St. Thomas a Becket - who was beheaded in 1170 by then English king and monarch Henry also. Two great priests, who served as religious leaders, were great minds and holy men of God. A model for all of us who serve you, the people of God here in Parkwood!
Please join us for Forty Hours this week! Father Francis Foley will preach Monday evening. Father Keith
Chylinski, a former parochial vicar here will preach Tuesday evening. Lastly on Wednesday evening I will preach about our great patron and saint, Archbishop Anselm. And I hope to lead a procession around our beautiful church outside (depending on what the weather holds Wednesday). If it is inclement, we will process in the church itself. Many thanks to those planning and making these liturgies so beautiful for all of us. May the Lord bless you and your loved ones this week - may we ask Saint Anselm’s intercession for all of our needs!
+ Father Rossi

Vincentian Message… In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus explains the meaning of the scriptures. Like the disciples, when we offer and receive forgiveness our hearts burn because we encounter the risen Christ within us. Have you considered answering the call to “help the poor find forgiveness and healing in their life” by joining the Society of St. Vincent DePaul?
