As I mentioned last week, the latest book by Matthew Kelly is about the lack of holiness in our society and especially among Christians who profess a faith in Jesus Christ but do not believe that they can become holy. Those words rang true to me because they echo the writings of a theologian who I heard about exten-sively when I was in the seminary. The name of the theologian is Karl Rahner. He was a German Jesuit Priest and a contemporary of another German priest, Rev. Joseph Ratzinger who is now known as Pope Benedict XVI. Both Rahner and Ratzinger at-tended the second Vatican Council as theological advisors to Bishops. Both men, as Germans and Europeans witnessed the decline in Catholic practice in their homelands. Both men wrote about the future of the Church.!!

For Karl Rahner, it was in one of his last books, “The Practice of Faith,” that he wrote about his vision of, “The Spirituality of the Future.” In this short essay, he recognized that, “The spirituality of the future will not be supported or…will be much less sup-ported by” a supposedly Christian culture. He wrote of the indi-vidual Christian’s need to make a “solitary decision [to follow Christ] contrary to public opinion.” He compared this solitary decision as “analogous to that of the martyrs of the first century of Christianity.” Then he wrote the words for which today, he is most quoted, “It has already been pointed out that the Christian of the future will be a mystic or he or she will not exist at all.”!!

Like Rahner, Matthew Kelly also points out in his books of the individual choice one must make to be a follower of Christ. For us today, we recognize this in our own attachment to our ethnic heritages. We know that we can longer assume that an individual is a believer just because he or she has a family name that hark-ens back to a “Catholic Nation.” Kelly speaks of those who be-lieve they can indeed become holy; Rahner speaks of martyrs and mystics. All these terms speak of the same reality: a con-scious, personal decision to live one’s life in imitation of the person of Jesus Christ.!!

Jesus Christ calls us to be his followers, his disciples. In that he is calling us to constantly be learning from him. Moreover, he himself says of us, “I no longer call you slaves, but friends.” Ba-sically what both Rahner and Kelly are writing about is the need for believers to see them themselves as “friends of Jesus Christ.” As one of my former professors said to us in class, “There is only One Gospel: and that is Jesus Christ. We have four versions that lead us to a knowledge of Him, but we are saved when we can say that we know Christ.”!!

Coming this Fall, we will begin to offer a program in the parish called, “Christlife.” It is a program that was begun in the Archdi-ocese of Baltimore and has been spreading around the nation. Recently, one of our neighboring parishes, St. John in North At-tleboro, took part in this program. The program consists of three, sequential, six to seven week cycles of weekly meetings of pray-er, presentations with table discussions and sharing a meal. The three cycles focus on three aspects of the path of holiness: Get-ting to Know Christ; Being transformed by Christ; and Sharing Christ with others.!!

I encourage all members of the parish to take part in this because we are now a new entity, the parish of St. AidanSt. Patrick. This program can become a unifying factor for us as we all are shar-ing the same experience. It also can help to identify us as a parish that welcomes and reaches out to all who want to come to know Christ. We will soon be sending out more information on this program, but next week, I want to speak about why I believe we need to be more active in sharing our faith.!
