Tone system ON indicator.* * Functional only in conjunction withoptional tone module for selective calling.SP3110ContentsPageIntroduction 1Emergency 3Batteries 4Operator'sguide 5Quickchannelprogramming 7Additionalfeatures 8Installation 10Rechargeablebatteries 11Mounting of clip 13Removing clip 141 SP3110IntroductionSP3110, your new VHF-transceiver, is approvedto fulfil the GMDSS-requirements to portableVHF-transceivers, and so it is a part of therequired safety equipment to be used in anemergency situation.However, the best way to guarantee functional-ity in an emergency, is to use the equipment inthe daily work on-board, as a useful communica-tion media.This is possible, due to a unique concept, withthe PRIMARY EMERGENCY BATTERY, storedfor the emergency, and a SECONDARY RE-CHARGEABLE BATTERY for daily use of yournew portable VHF-transceiver.This concept secures at least 8 hours operationtime, even at minus 20 C at sea.ECI has developed the first portable VHF-transceiver to be used as you normally use atelephone.This feature gives you a much better com-munication quality in noisy surroundings.SP3110 2Furthermore, you have all the internationalsimplex channels, quick selection of distress ch.16 and two additional user programmablechannels, and a lot of other useful features.3 SP3110EmergencyProcedure for SP3110.If an emergency situation forces you to leave theship, do as follows:1. Remove the top-seal of the orange emer-gency battery package.2. Insert the battery package into the handheldtransceiver unit.3. Push the - button,until the radio turns on, indicated by channelread-out in the display.4. Push the 16 - button to ensure that thechannel for distress traffic is active.NOTE !Due to battery storage effects, the turn-on timemay be extended compared to normal condi-tions. If Battery seal is broken for test, fill in labelon battery.SP3110 4BatteriesThis unit has been delivered with two types ofbattery packages :* An orange PRIMARY EMERGENCY BAT-TERY package, to be used in an emergency,as indicated by its colour.* A black SECONDARY RE-CHARGEABLEBATTERY for daily use of the equipment.Replacement of battery package :* Press the two stainless steel locks on eachside of the battery package with your thumband indexfinger and pull out the battery.28468* Insert the new battery package into thebottom of the transceiver and press itupwards until it snaps in with a click.5 SP3110Operator's guidePress.....Until unit turns ON/OFF, indicated by thedisplay readout.To lock keyboard, indicated byTo unlock keyboard, disappears.To select loudspeaker operation,.To select telephone-mode operation.To turn on keyboard beep-function.To turn off keyboard beep-function.To change setting of a selected function,Default: Volume level function.PWRTo select Tx power level function.CHTo select Channel selection function.SQTo select Squelch level function.VOLTo select Volume level function.SP3110 6ATo select quick channel A.BTo select quick channel B.16To select distress channel 16.7 SP3110Quick channel programmingThe two quick channel keysAandBcaneasily be programmed for single touch selec-tion of any of the channels contained in theequipment.These keys may be programmed as follows:Press CH , use the key to select thewanted channel number, which must be shownin the display.thenPress the key (less than 1 sec.) followed bythe key you want to programme,AorB , formore than 1 sec.SP3110 8Additional featuresYour SP3110 has some other features whichmay show up to be useful in daily use.On the side of the transceiver you will find thefollowing switches (look inside the cover of thisfolder):Backlight switch for turning on/off the key-board and display illumination (if you forget toturn off the illumination, it will be done automati-cally after approx. 30 seconds to increase bat-tery life time). The backlight function may beprogrammed to operate in other ways, pleasecontact your S.P.Radio distributor.Monitor switch for easy listening-in on theselected channel, irrespective of the squelchsetting.Keyboard operated facilities:Auto squelch setting. Press SQ for morethan one second, the transceiver will automati-cally find an appropriate level to mute thereceiver.9 SP3110Programmable functions:Tx power level preset value. Select thewanted power level and press PWR for morethan 1 second.Volume level preset value. Select the wantedlevel and press VOL for more than 1 second.Alarm functions:Battery warning facility. When the batterycapacity has decreaced to a few percent of fullload, an audible alarm is heard in the loud-speaker and a battery sign will be shown in thedisplay. At the same time the transmitter powerlevel will automatically be set to LOw level, toextend the remaining operation time of thebattery.An audible alarm is heard each 10 seconds untilthe display readout shows charGe, and the setis switched off automatically.SP3110 10InstallationWith your SP3110 you have got a combined holder/charger. If the transceiver NOT is used in the dailywork, the primary emergency battery may bestored in the holder. If however the charger is usedfrequently, the emergency battery must be storedin another place, due to charger heating.The charger may be connected to 110/230 VAC,OR a DC source 10.8 -> 31.8 VDC.+-10,8 - 32V DCACOR28469BATTERY CHARGER SP3911ON / OFFCHARThe charger will automatically detect the type ofbattery in the transceiver, the charging processwill start when you press the Char-button andthe red charging indicator turns on. A completecharge cycle is finished after 13 1/2 hour,indicated by a green coloured charge indicator.Please refer to part Rechargeable batteries forproper use of secondary batteries.11 SP3110Rechargeable batteriesBefore taken into operation, the NiCd batteryincluded, must be fully charged.The battery can be stored at room temperaturein any charge condition, without any risk ofdamage to the battery. However, if the batteryhas been stored for an unknown period of time,it must be fully charged before used.The only maintenance needed for your NiCdbattery is to keep it charged and with cleanterminals. The battery must be at normal roomtemperature when it is charged, and the trans-ceiver must be switched off.WARNINGThe battery may explode if it is exposed to openfire.SP3110 12MEMORY EFFECT. Your NiCd battery mayshow a memory effect, indicated by a reducedcharging capability.This effect will typically arise if your batteryrepeatedly is charged after a partly discharge.A battery with memory effect is not in optimumworking condition.How to avoid memory effect:Use your transceiver until the battery is fullydischarged, indicated by the equipment.
