Term 1 Week 6 - 05/03/14

Dear Parents,

Today we mark the beginning of Lent with a whole school mass. During Lent at school we try to focus the children’s attention on how they can help those less fortunate in communities all over the world. Social Justice and equity are very important parts of our school curriculum and this is highlighted throughout Project Compassion this Term. Project Compassion is one way we become aware of individuals and communities who struggle with the basics such as clean drinking water, basic health and education. Below I have reproduced the parish focus for the month of March. I particularly like the notion of placing our trust in God and collaborating with others to seek the answers. The truly wise realise that they do not have all the answers.

Many thanks to the many people who made the Welcome BBQ and KidsMatter launch such a success.Even though there was a change of venue and it was wet, there was a wonderful buzz and welcome from everyone. Many thanks to Jean McManus, the Year 6 parents and Marie and Kay for hospitality. Thank you to our class parents who welcomed everyone. A very big thank you to Year 6 who led the games after the concert. It was a pleasure to have Andrew Chinn work with the children and teachers again to sing songs of praise and welcome.

Many thanks to Leonie Scarlett and Eloise Critchley who attended the Diocesan Parent Council dinner and workshop with me on Monday evening. The focus of the workshop was on creating parent friendly schools. There were many practical suggestions given to all the school teams who attended. We will be feeding back ideas and information to the P and F and staff. Next week is Catholic Schools Week. We will hold an Open Morning for new families (2015) on Friday, 14th March, 9.00-11.00am. If you received an application and are not sending your child next year can you let the office know.

Message of Pope Francis for Lent 2014

“He became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich.” (cf. 2 Cor 8:9)

Find the message at: http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/francesco/messages/lent/documents/papa... God’s wealth passes not through our wealth, but invariably and exclusively through our personal and communal poverty, enlivened by the Spirit of Christ. In imitation of our Master, we Christians are called to confront the poverty of our brothers and sisters, to touch it, to make it our own and to take practical steps to alleviate it… When power, luxury and money become idols, they take priority over the need for a fair distribution of wealth. Our consciences thus need to be converted to justice, equality, simplicity and sharing.

Today is Ash Wednesday which signifies the beginning of Lent. Lent is a preparation for Easter and the focal point of the Church’s liturgical year. As we prepare for the most important of Christian feasts we are reminded of the love that God has shown in sending Jesus to us. Lent is a time of thanksgiving for what God has done for us.

Lenten Penance: Practices of penance are meant to help us to come to openness to God. They need to be educative, transforming us so that our hearts may turn more easily to God. The choice of Lenten penance is important. It is not just what we do; it is why we do it, and the effect that it has on our lives. Choose wisely and Lent can become a time of many graces and significant growth in our relationship with God.

DAYS OF PENANCE Abstinence from meat and fasting are to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. On all other Fridays of the year the law of the common practice of penance is fulfilled by performing any of the following: a) Prayer – for example: Mass attendance; family prayer; a visit to the church or chapel; reading the Bible; making the Stations of the Cross; praying the Rosary. b) Self-denial – for example: not eating meat; not eating sweets or dessert; giving up entertainment to spend time with the family; limiting food and drink so as to give to the poor. c) Helping others – for example: special attention to someone who is poor, sick, elderly, lonely or overburdened. All who have completed their eighteenth year and have not yet begun their sixtieth year are bound to fast. All who have completed their fourteenth year are bound to abstain.

In 2014, Lent lasts from Ash Wednesday (5th March ) to The Mass of the Lord’s Supper (17th April) inclusive. On Good Friday and, if possible also on Holy Saturday until the Easter Vigil, the Easter Fast is observed.

PASCHAL PRECEPT Each of the faithful is obliged to receive Holy Communion at least once a year. This is done between Ash Wednesday (5th March 2014) and Trinity Sunday (15th June 2014), unless for a good reason it is done at another time during the year. All of the faithful are obliged to confess their grave sins at least once a year.
