Volume 1, Number 8 September 2012
Over the past year, Missouri Delta is proud of the
many new services they have started for the com-
munity, such as Orthopaedics, Wound & Hyper-
baric Medicine, and Pulmonology, but one of the
areas we are most proud of is Patient Satisfaction.
Missouri Delta Medical Center has scored
positively with Press Ganey, the industry’s leader
in healthcare performance improvement and sur-
veyor of patient satisfaction for over 2,700 hospitals nationwide. Accord-
ing to Jason Schrumpf, President and CEO of Missouri Delta Medical Center
“our workforce has consistently provided excellent patient care, scoring
better than 90% of hospitals nationwide in patient satisfaction over the
past 2 years. This is an extraordinary achievement that reinforces the pa-
tient centered culture at Missouri Delta. It is evident that we are putting
patients first in every aspect of their hospitalization.”
Missouri Delta Medical Center was also recently highlighted in the
popular Consumer Reports Magazine for its solid quality and safety scores.
The August Consumer Reports magazine featured hospital ratings based
on six categories: infections, readmissions, communication, CT scanning,
complications and mortality. The safety ratings for 1,159 hospitals, based
on the most current data available from the Centers of Medicare and Medi-
caid, were presented in the magazine. The hospitals were ranked state-
wide and Missouri Delta Medical Center scored above the hospitals in both
Cape Girardeau and Poplar Bluff.
“This ranking shows Missouri Delta’s unsurpassed clinical quality
and patient safety,” states Schrumpf, “Our entire workforce is to be com-
mended for their hard work and dedication to our patients.”

Sikeston's Blair
Moran receives
Veterans award
The volunteer efforts of a
local veteran received
recognition Monday.
Missouri Lieutenant
Governor Peter Kinder
presented Blair Moran of
Sikeston with the
Veterans Service Award in
a special ceremony in
Veterans Park. Moran
was nominated for the
award by Stephen Taylor
of Sikeston through a letter to Rep. Ellen Brandom.
"As a young man, Blair Moran served his nation in the U.S. Army, and like
many of Missouri's veterans his service didn't end when his hitch in the
Army was over," Kinder said.

Southeast Missouri State University Biofuel/Biomass Farm
Dedication
On July 19th, 2012 Dr. Ken Dobbins, President of Southeast Missouri State
Unversity, along with Mo. Department of Ag and Missouri Delta AgBioWorks
hosted a dedication ceremony at the Sikeston Missouri Campus. This event
officially announced that the University’s research farm would become a
Research and Demonstration Facility dedicated to Biofuels and Biomass crops.
The 10 acre research facility will be open to companies and organizations
wishing to research specific energy crops and how they perform in Southeast
Missouri. Crops include Winter Canola, Sweet Sorghum, Giant Miscanthus,
Sugar Beets, and Algae trials.
Students will also benefit greatly from the research that will be performed at the
Sikeston Campus. They will have the opportunity to work directly with energy
crops that are primarily new to the region. This will also allow them the
opportunity to work with companies that are looking at Southeast Missouri as a
possible location to produce and process biomass feedstocks in the near future.
For more information regarding SEMO’s Research Facility contact Dr. Michael
Aide @ 573-651-2796 or Chris Evans at Missouri Delta AgBioWorks 573-471-
2498.
NEW CROP INCOME OPPORTUNITIES
Missouri Delta AgBioWorks along with MARC IV and the University of Mo Extension recently held an Energy Crop meeting at the Miner Convention Center in Miner, Mo. Crops covered included Giant Miscanthus, Sweet Sorghum with an emphasis on Canola.
Southeast Missouri has the opportunity to become a major producer of Winter Canola as a feedstock for biodiesel and for use as cooking oil. In 2011 The United States imported almost 5 million tons of Canola from Canada. The U.S. has seen an increase in acreage throughout North Dakota, Minnesota and most recently Oklahoma due to high demand.
One of the many benefits of hosting the recent energy crop meeting was the opportunity to provide local producers interested in growing Canola with prospective buyers. Ag Strong out of Bowersville, GA and Producers Cooperative of Oklahoma City, Ok were on hand to provide growers with detailed marketing information for next year’s crop.

With increased interest, potential buyers, and the crop’s many benefits, farmers will have the potential to see increased profits and diversification. Canola in Southeast Missouri has the ability to give the area another great opportunity for a new cash crop with the possibility of local processing facilities. This will not only benefit area producers but surrounding communities as well.
