This relaxed tour, aimed at encompassing a memorable selection of all three, also connected with such sought-after birds as Whitehead’s Trogon and Broadbill, Giant and Blue-banded Pitta, Everett’s Thrush and the unique Bristlehead among the over 260 species recorded (including 41 endemics); nine primates, five civets and 14 squirrels and flying squirrels were among the 45 mammal species (13 endemics) seen. trails produced a Crimson-headed Partridge. After rain in the early afternoon, we were fortunate to find a pair of Everett’s Thrushes feeding by the roadside, oblivious to the passing traffic. These were the highlight of the afternoon, but we also had overflying Sunda Cuckoo, Blyth’s Hawk Eagle and Oriental Honey Buzzard, as well as a number of rodents, including Bornean Black-banded and Brooke’s Squirrels, Mountain Treeshrew and Lesser Gymnure. We made a pre-dawn start the next day to try our luck with Mountain Scops Owls. Despite getting tantalisingly close, no views were forthcoming. Once it got light we began connecting with some quality birds, including a pair of stunning emerald-green Whitehead’s Broadbills and a Bornean Stubtail pulsating with effort as it issued its near supersonic song. Hitting the trails again, we added Bornean Shortwing and Temminck’s Babbler before our second Whitehead’s of the morning - a pair of Trogons, including an adult male in his sunburn-inducing brilliance. The afternoon was a wash-out, so we went out after dinner to try for owls again, adding Sabah Giant Rat to our mammal list before finally tracking down a Mountain Scops Owl - a fitting reward for our perseverance.

The following day we opted for a slightly more relaxed pace, starting off in the Botanical Gardens, and enjoying the incredible diversity of mountain’s plant life showcased therein. It proved a good place to get close to some of the commoner montane birds; Yellow-breasted Warbler, Eyebrowed Jungle Flycatcher (though it’s a robin, and named Bornean Shade-dweller in the new field guide to the region) and Bornean Whistler among them. A Red-bellied Sculptor Squirrel was the highlight, and we also observed several Brooke’s Squirrels. Higher up the

mountain we were enshrouded in low cloud, but still managed point blank views of Jentink’s and Bornean Black-banded Squirrels, as well as a party of seven Red-breasted Partridges foraging below us on the slopes. Rain once again curtailed the afternoon’s planned activities.

Mountain Scops Owl and Red-breasted Partridge The next morning was taken up with the long drive east to Sepilok, and the journey was enlivened by our first few lowland species, notably Black-and-yellow Broadbill and Blue-crowned Hanging Parrot. Long-tailed Shrike is an increasingly commonly encountered species in Sabah these days; a very early migrant Brown Shrike was more of a surprise. At the Rainforest Discovery Centre, we enjoyed prolonged views of two Orang-utan mothers with their youngsters, as well as a fine crepuscular performance by several Red Giant Flying Squirrels. Wallace’s Hawk Eagles were in attendance as always, and we also encountered Green Ioras, Black-winged Flycatcher Shrikes and Fiery Minivets, as well as Black and Bushy-crested Hornbills.

Black-and-Yellow Broadbill and Black-and-Red Broadbill

Dawn the following morning saw us once again at the Rainforest Discovery Centre. Bird activity was rather low, with the highlights being several fly-past Cinnamon-headed Green Pigeons, Copper-throated Sunbird, displaying Crested Goshawk and Bornean Brown Barbets. The spectacular Gomantong Caves did not disappoint, despite a recent harvest of nests, and we were able to locate a few Edible-nest Swiftlets at nests among the more numerous Black-nest Swiftlets. A calling Short-toed Coucal declined to show itself, but a Black-and-red Broadbill performed to an appreciative audience. An afternoon trip along the Kinabatangan River produced a magnificent male Orang-utan, as well as several Proboscis Monkey troops, and one or two Silvered Langurs as the sun set. Black and Oriental Pied Hornbills, and a Jerdon’s Baza were the avian highlights.

We were on the river again before first light, but despite trawling the smaller tributaries extensively, there was no sign or sound of our main target - Bornean Ground Cuckoo. Compensations were to be had in the form of pairs of Storm’s Storks and Rhinoceros Hornbills, a reasonably close White-fronted Falconet, Hooded Pitta and Blue-eared Kingfisher. In the evening we watched a large troop of Proboscis Monkeys crossing the river, and after dark we had tremendous looks at an oddly-vocalising Large Frogmouth, Small-toothed Palm Civets and several Buffy Fish Owls.

Large Frogmouth and Hooded Pitta

Wrinkled Hornbill and White-crowned Hornbill Our last morning on the river turned up a few noteworthy additions, including a fine pair of White-crowned Hornbills, a basking Estuarine Crocodile and a Sacred Kingfisher, an uncommon Austral winter visitor to Borneo. Our transfer to Tabin Wildlife Reserve took up much of the middle of the day, but there was still time to go exploring in late afternoon. We were treated to a family party of five Great Slaty Woodpeckers, before chancing upon no fewer than three Giant Pittas calling in a small triangle of undergrowth. Some strategic positioning enabled close views of one of the birds, a female, in the fading light. After dark a night drive brought us views of Brown Wood Owl and Sunda Frogmouth, as well as Black, Thomas’s and Red Giant Flying Squirrels, Leopard Cat, Common Palm and Malay Civets. Our first full morning at Tabin began in the best possible way, with a family of five Bornean Gibbons calling in the trees above us. This was followed shortly afterwards by a pair of Helmeted Hornbills flying overhead, their maniacal laughing calls were a constant accompaniment throughout the morning, at the same time spectacular and poignant given the current severe threat facing the species at the hands of illegal ivory poachers – the

species has recently been uplisted to Critically Endangered. The three Giant Pittas were once again in full voice, and this time a male gave close but tantalisingly brief views. A calling Olive-backed Woodpecker obligingly flew into a nearby tree, and Whiskered Treeswifts were admired as they landed and shut their wings with clipped precision. Already in pitta heaven, we trekked up a steep slope to eventually get decent views of a resplendent Blue-banded Pitta, but our fortune ran out with a briefly calling Bornean Banded Pitta, which chose the thickest undergrowth imaginable to call from and refused to show. A splendid male Bornean Crested Fireback was some compensation. The afternoon was spent in relaxed mode, with just Black-capped Babbler and Rufous-winged Philentoma of note, before we set off on an extended night drive. Having been entertained by a Buffy Fish Owl hunting in mid-stream, we went on to see a pair of Bat Hawks and a good selection of mammals, of which Greater Mouse Deer was new for the trip. After an early breakfast, and a walk back to the chalet that was interrupted by a juvenile Wallace’s Hawk Eagle doing its best to grab a squirrel out of a thick bush, we were again serenaded by Bornean Gibbons, before visiting a mud volcano. Birds en route included White-crowned Forktail, Striped Wren Babbler, Short-tailed Babbler and Checker-throated Woodpecker, as well as Wreathed Hornbill, our eighth species for the trip. Lesser Mouse Deer and Sambar were also seen, but best of all were three Sabah Grey Langurs coming down to feed on the mineral-rich mud. Our departure from Tabin in the midst of a deluge was enlivened by a couple of Storm’s Storks feeding on the waterlogged road out. We arrived at Danum Valley just in time for a night drive, which added Binturong and Masked Palm Civet to our mammal list. Our first full day at Danum was very hard work. The canopy walkway, only part-open due to a lightning strike earlier in the year, produced a few bulbuls and always entertaining Black-and-yellow Broadbills, but the highlight was a close-feeding Plain Pygmy Squirrel. Lunchtime was enlivened by a Great-billed Heron and a Lesser Fish Eagle, and in the afternoon we added Black-throated Wren Babbler. A search for Blyth’s Frogmouth after dark produced three calling birds but none were responsive, and an aggressive ‘Bornean Wood Owl’ (a split from Brown) put paid to our chances of seeing a briefly calling Oriental Bay Owl.

North Bornean Gibbon and Leopard Cat A small troop of Red Langurs began proceedings the next morning, followed by three White-fronted Falconets warming up in the early morning rays. Another hunt for Bornean Banded Pitta produced a male Diard’s Trogon, and on our way back to the lodge we spent some time admiring a pregnant female Orang-utan just waking up from a snooze. A pair of Wallace’s Hawk Eagles flushed a Yellow-throated Marten which ran vertically down a tree-trunk, leaving us wondering how on earth it could do that without falling. A roosting red morph Colugo was appreciated, and further highlights were a Brown Wood Owl flushed from a day roost while we were admiring a Black-headed Pitta, a large male Orang-utan and a couple of male Bornean Crested Firebacks walking to roost. Our penultimate day in the field began by dividing our attentions between the river and the steeper slopes above the lodge. On the latter, Cinnamon-rumped Trogon and White-necked Babbler were a good return for the laborious uphill climb. A Scarlet-rumped Trogon and Malaysian Hawk Cuckoo were seen in the afternoon, before a deluge curtailed the rest of the day’s activities. Our last morning started early, and as we watched a fruiting tree attracting a variety of birds, we were surprised to hear a Blyth’s Frogmouth calling softly in broad daylight. It bamboozled all attempts to locate it until Holly brilliantly spotted the bird, a male, sitting on a nest about 30 feet up. Having enjoyed this late bonus, we then ran into a mixed flock of Dusky Broadbills, Bornean Black Magpies and at least 10 Bristleheads. The latter are developing a bit of a reputation on our tours as ‘last day birds’, but we did not complain as the
