Application monitoring is the process of monitoring and managing of application stack to ensure that they perform in accordance with the level of service expected.

Application software ensures hassle free performance. This is made possible by their diagnosing and detecting properties that help them in early detection and correction of application problems that may hamper the system’s optimum productivity and performance.

In the following section we shall see the importance of monitoring software and learn how they play a vital role in early detection and resolving of issues that may affect the level of performance.

1. Application Performance management—what is it?

Application performance management refers to the management and monitoring of systems, networks, and other related devices on a continuous basis.

This continuous process makes sure that the

performances of devices do not suffer deviation from the normal standards expected of them. Even if there is a deviation, the 24x7 monitoring ensures that the issue is detected and resolved as soon as possible.

This enhances business productivity by taking

effective measures against the possibility of downtime or other performance hampering issues. Early detection of problems and other negative factors gives the administrator enough time to fix them before they snowball into something major.

This is both cost- and time-saving as early detection and correction helps prevent costly and frustrating service interruptions. A unified view of the system provided by these tools maximizes performance management.

2. How is Application Performance Assessed?

Computational resource method is the first of the two methods by which the application performance is measured or assessed.

In computational resource method, a device known as the computational resource is connected to the computer. Random access memory (RAM), central processing unit (CPU) time, memory on the hard disk (hard disk space), virtual memory, and others are some of the examples of computational resources.

External devices that too fall under the category of

computational resources are router connected to the computer; network connections, network throughput, network connections, and others.

The second method of assessing or measuring application performance refers to the sum total of performance as witnessed by the individual using any particular application.

This method of assessing the performance of application consists of two components. The first component is the measure of bandwidth. Bandwidth refers to the volume of transactions processed per unit time by the application.

The second component is referred to as latency. Explained in layman terms, it is nothing but the time interval elapsed between the user query and the system response time.

Both these methods serve as a benchmark for application performance. Any deviation from this benchmark alerts the administrator that there may be an issue with the application.

This apart from providing help in checking and resolving present performance can also predict future application performance if they are correlated with external events.

Servers are machines, and, like any other machine, can crash, become slow or unresponsive, or even fail. This can result in service downtime and crucial loss of productivity.

Server monitoring software by Logic Monitor are used for automatically scanning servers on networks to check for slow responding, failing, unresponsive, or crashed servers. These software check the services status with a time period that may range anywhere between 60 seconds to four hours.
