Make Repower Your Specialty with Market-Leading Products

High prices for new boats and a growing used boat market offer plenty of opportuni-ties to upgrade and renew any classic boat for yet another generation of duty. Unless scuttled or landfilled, fiberglass boats hardly ever go away and can generally be repaired. However, the propulsion system, electronics, controls, plumbing, wiring and interiors of boats see their fair share of exposure to sun, corrosion, wear and tear.

Those who specialize in all things repower have many opportunities to sell a huge assort-ment of products to their customers. Addition-ally, this opens the opportunity to service those same customers for years to come. After all, who is now more qualified than the repowering dealer to service the boat?

In many ways, selling a repower is like selling a new boat. Those who are good at it will build a clientele. Business-savvy repower dealers have figured out that the more quality products with a factory warranty they sell, the less their per-sonal risk. This is because an upstanding prod-uct manufacturer covers the warranty instead of leaving the dealership facing full liability if something goes wrong.

For example, if a dealer custom-builds an engine with cheap aftermarket parts that fail, then the dealer is on the hook for the full liability expense with the customer. This takes time and

attention away from other work. That can lead to delays and cost-cutting tactics to salvage any profitability for the job. Selling and installing factory products with a warranty reduces warranty risk, and lets the dealer concentrate on growing the busi-ness. So, avoid saving pennies that can cost dollars.

The key to success for a profitable repower dealer is installing quality products as efficiently as possible into as many hulls as possible, with as little business risk as possible. This runs counter only to measuring hours worked, or buying the cheap-est semi-functional aftermarket parts possible as a path to profitability.

Mercury uses only marine partsMany aftermarket parts used by rebuilders

simply cannot hold up to the demands of a marine engine because many use automotive parts. Automotive parts were never meant for a corrosive and highly stressed marine envi-ronment. Marine engines have to be far more durable and reliable, due to the unusually high levels of stress that are put on boat engines, hour after hour.

Mercury is the original equipment manufac-turer, and knows what it takes to build engines

that can withstand the harsh demands of a marine environment. Mercury and Quicksilver Remanufacturing use only marine-proven parts in engines.

The remanufacturing processMercury and Quicksilver Remanufacturing

thoroughly inspect all cores. Each remanufac-tured engine is disassembled, processed to remove debris, hot pressure washed and re-inspected. Any damaged parts are scrapped, never welded or repaired.

All machining tolerances are held much tighter for marine duty than for automotive speci-fications. Assembly with pro-grammed torque tools ensures an even and consistent installa-tion. Engines are then hot-test-ed, compression checked and pressure tested before leaving the facility. To see a factory video tour of the process, go to: www.mercuryremanufactur-ing.com

A quality installationMercury Remanufacturing

literally wrote the book on a proper repower. The Quicksil-ver Repower Guide is available to service technicians. It offers guidelines for root-cause diag-nosis, application, and service specifications. The Quicksilver

Repower Guide offers technicians guidance for completing high-quality installations to en-sure every engine passes the pre-delivery in-spection that is required for every Mercury and Quicksilver Remanufacturing product.

Mercury product coverageFor 2015, get a three-year limited warranty on

all Quicksilver Remanufacturing Pro-Series long blocks sold in the U.S at no charge. Just attach the pre-delivery inspection report to the invoice for coverage. No further steps required.

For 2015, Mercury Remanufacturing offers free 1+2 extended coverage from Mercury Product Protection on most Plus Series en-gine models sold in the U.S. That is one year of standard limited warranty plus two years of coverage with Mercury Product Protection at no charge with registration of the product and pro-gram materials.

The 357 and 8.1L Horizon Plus Series in-board engines come with a standard three-year limited warranty that begins when the product is registered.

The deliveryWhen a boat breaks down during boating sea-

son, delivery time for a replacement engine is critical. With more than a dozen warehouses in the U.S., Mercury Marine’s nationwide distribution network can deliver quickly. Distribution partners Land ‘N’ Sea, Diversified Marine Products, and Kellogg Marine Supply offer same-day delivery on many routes. And help is just a call away by calling Mercury, or the Engine Power Center specialists.

Better than the aftermarketWhen it comes to replacing part of an engine,

or repowering a boat, there are really only two options available: genuine factory components or aftermarket. For over 75 years, Mercury Ma-rine has stood for reliability and durability; it is the trusted name in recreational marine power. Its products are designed and built to rigid specifications, and are built to last.

All of the parts and components are made to work together – whether for new engines or for remanufactured products. For example, Mercury refuses to offer short blocks, or en-gines without tin ware, because that prevents oil leaks from fit issues, and improves durability by protecting the engine internals form dirt and debris.

Coverage provided by the aftermarket may not be what is expected. Returning product to the factory for repairs, declining warranties, co-payment for additional warranty by third parties, and other tricks are found throughout the after-market. Taking three to four weeks away from someone’s boating season to return parts to the factory is like taking a family vacation hostage. Return programs like these create hassle, and they ultimately take the fun out of boating.

The old adage “You get what you pay for” still proves true today. What may appear to be up-front savings may cost more in future repairs or lost time.
