PARISH OF ST. JOSEPH June 28,2015

Catholic Tradition is very practical when it comes to spirituality and our daily lives. We always pray: pray when we get up offering the day and its concerns to the Lord and ask for His blessings to do what is pleasing to the Lord and to courageously witness to the Truth that He is our Lord and Savior and we are His disciples carrying out what he wanted us to in this life, pray when we go to sleep, thanking Him for the blessings and protection that we enjoyed during that day and all our life asking His special protection and during the night and forgiveness for the failures during that day, pray before the meals with gratitude for the privilege to have such good food and opportunity to enjoy it while remembering those who do not have such advantages in life, pray before work and study for an efficient and successful completion of what we aim at, pray before travel for safety and security for us and for those who travel alongside, pray for the sick and suffering for the Lord’s healing touch and relief from pain, anxiety, and fears, pray for others who desperately need the Lord’s special blessings and grace as they struggle to deal with unique situations of their faith journey and discipleship experience, pray for peace and prosperity, pray for people in need and people in trouble, pray for missionaries and the spread of the Kingdom of God, and here is no end what do we pray for. One prayer that is unique to Catholic Tradition is that we pray for the Souls in Purgatory. When many a different de-nomination struggles with the concept of purgatory, we do not have any problem to know and believe that there is a purifying stage in our God realization after this life when we are unable to gain any merit on our own. Whereas the prayers and sacrifices offered by their dear living ones can help them. Catholic Tradition believes that these souls in purgatory can help us by offering their prayers and sacrifices for us. So it is a mutual support that is an expression of the communion of saints – the glorious church, the suffering church, and the militant church. One important effect of this prayerfulness of Catholic Tradition is that our life becomes more and more God-centered as opposed to self-centered. We find ourselves committed to seek God’s Will and dedicated to do what is pleasing to God always. We become more concerned about God’s plan for our salvation. Our philosophy of life, our attitude to others and issues in life, our world view and our critiquing of the mundane milieu are all influenced by our spirituality and faith. This prayerfulness becomes spontaneous when we are raised in spiritually sound Catholic homes where parents exemplify prayerful model life every day. It is very important that parents insist on developing this prayer habit in their children from the very beginning itself. In-stead of providing all worldly entertainments, teach children to pray, to spend time with the Lord every day, to set apart time for daily spiritual activities, certainly to do that with them. This is essential to Catholic Parenting. God bless you all

TREASURES AND TRADI TIONS

The premier poet of the English language, Geoffrey Chau-cer, introduced one of his most beloved characters, the “Wife of Bath,” by this telling remark: “Husbands at church door she had five.” Four times widowed, she was setting off on a pilgrim-age, notably without number five. The church door is a curious detail, pointing to the fourteenth-century wedding custom of marrying on the porch of the parish church. The goal was to give maximum publicity to the consent of the groom and bride, and so consent was moved from the bride’s home to a public venue. The priest would stand in the doorway and begin by sprinkling the couple with holy water. He needed to make sure they weren’t too closely related and give them some instruction. He would direct the groom to pay the bride’s family a dowry, and then announce the monetary amounts to the interested passersby. Only then would the guests enter the church for the wedding Mass, during which the bride and groom would hold lighted candles. The gradual move from home to church and the shift from the bride’s father to the priest’s authority helped to protect the freedom of brides who weren’t quite as confident as the Wife of Bath.

Pedro le responde: Lord, you know that I love you, mientras que en español le dice: “Señor, tú sabes que te quiero”.
