3.AimsoftheAirCadetProgram

4.HowolddoIhavetobetojoinAirCadets?Youmustbe12yearsold,andyoucanremainuntilthedayyouturn19yearsold.
5.WhatdoIneedtojoin?Aninterestintheprogram,yourparent’sorguardian’spermissionandsomedocuments:proofofProvincialHealthInsurance,andCanadiancitizenshiporlandedimmigrantstatus.Youalsomustbewillingtoattendregularparadenightandparticipateinfundraising.
6.Whatdoesitcosttojoin?Duetoincreasingcostofrunningtheprogram,in2004,theAirCadetLeagueofCanadaimposedanannualregistrationfeeforallcadets.888AvengerSquadron’sannualregistrationfeeisapproximately$200percadetpertrainingyear.Theprovincialleague(BritishColumbiaProvincialCommittee)collectsanannualfeefromeachsquadronintheprovince.Thisfee–approximately$100percadet–enablestheAirCadetProgramtoprovidehighqualityactivitiesandcourses,andcoversexpensessuchastheLeague’sliabilityinsuranceandmaintenance/investmentintheLeague’saircraftfleet.
7.WhatwillIdo?
Someoftheactivitiesavailableatthecadetunitinclude:ceremonialdrill,firstaid,musicprograms,sports,andrange.WeeklyParadenightsincludeparadingaspartofadesignatedflightwithinthesquadronasawhole,andrank/age-leveledclasses.Occasionalweekendactivitiesinclude:gliding,camping/survivalexercises(calledFieldTrainingExerciseorFTX),andcitizenshipandvolunteeropportunities.Therewillalsobeplentyofotherfun,socialeventstoenjoywithyournewfriends.
8.WillIbeexpectedtojointheCanadianForces?No.However,thosewhodojointheCanadianForces,findtheyhavealreadylearnedvaluableskillsthroughAirCadettraining.CadetsarenotmembersoftheCanadianForcesandtheprogramisnotarecruitingprogram.

9.WhatdoIneedtoknowaboutuniforms?Uniformsareloanedtocadetsatnocosttothefamily.Cadetsneedtobeawarethateachfullsetofuniformcostsapproximately$500,anditisexpectedthattheuniformbereturnedinthesameconditionuponleavingthecadetprogram.Cadetsaremeasuredanduniformsareorderedfromamanufacturer.Asaresult,itisnormalnottohavedeliveryofcompleteuniformpiecesforseveralweeksormonths.Onlywhenallpiecesareavailable,willacadetreceivehis/heruniform.Torequestreplacementpartsorbadges,cadetsaretogototheofficeanytimebeforetheendofthirdperiodandasktheSupplyOfficersforhelp.
Familiesoftenpurchasegreenolivedrabfielduniformsforacadet’sfieldtrainingweekends(FTX).Thesefielduniformsareoptional.Afewweekspriortoeachweekendexercise,thestaffand/orseniorcadetsprovideaQ&Anightcoveringwhattoandwhatnottopackforfieldtraining.Purchasingasleepingbag,tarpandfoammatisoftenrecommendedduetothelimitedstockavailableatoursupportunitinChilliwack(FTXlocation).

BasicTrainingisthemain“ParadeNight”activity.888AvengerSquadronparadesonTuesdaynights,1800hr-2115hr(6:00p.m.-9:15p.m.).Paradingoccursatthestartandtheendoftheevening.Duringthetimeinbetween,cadetsattendclassesonGeneralCadetKnowledge,Drill,Citizenship,PhysicalFitnessandAirCrewSurvival.Cadetsalsotakeothercoursesspecifictotheirrank.Cadettrainingisprovidedbyseniorcadets,Officers,CivilianInstructors/Volunteers,andcommunityexperts
ParentsareinvitedtoattendClosingParadewhichusuallystartsat2050hr(8:50p.m.).CommandingOfficer’s(CO’s)Paradeisaspecialparadewherepromotionsaregiven,andthecadets’uniforms(fulldressuniformwithmedalsareworn)andpersonalgroomingstandardsarereviewed.COParadesoccurthefirstTuesdayofeverymonth.

11.AttendanceATTENDANCEatWEEKLYPARADESisMANDATORY!Ifacadetisunabletoattendaparadenight,itishis/herresponsibilitytocontactandinformtheirFlightCommanderpriorto1800hrs(6:00p.m.)oftheirabsence.Acceptablereasonsforabsencesincludeillnessorparentalrequest.Asacadetshouldbeexercisingtimemanagementandbeattentivetocommitments,schoolworkandprojectsaregenerallyconsideredweakreasonsforabsences.
ATTENDANCEatEXCURSIONS,EVENTS,TAGGING,VOLUNTEERING,ORSIMILAR,isEXPECTED,whereacadethassigned-up(madeacommitment)toparticipate!Ifacadetfailstofulfillacommitmentwithoutappropriateandacceptableprocedureofcancelingthecommitment,thecadetwillbeCHARGEDtheFEEorCOSTofsuchexcursionoreventand,asisthecasewherenocostisassociated,discreditmayaffectacadet’seligibilityforpromotionandsummertraining.
12.CoreTrainingTheAirCadetTrainingProgramprovidesawiderangeofactivitiesandcoursestomeettheinterestsofcadets.Allcadetsareprovidedwithnotebooksandreferencematerials.NewRecruits(cadets)begintheirtrainingwithDrillandGeneralCadetKnowledge,whichincludeslearningabouttheCadetMovementanditsdevelopment,anunderstandingofcadetrankstructure,andappreciationandcareofthecadetuniform.Aftertheirinitialtraining,recruitsareintegratedintoFlights(squadronsubgroupsmadeupofcadetsofvaryinglevelsandranks).RecruitswillbeassignedFlightStaffwhoareavailabletoansweranyquestionsandtoaddressanyconcernstheymayhave.CadetsthenmoveontosubjectssuchasCitizenship,PhysicalFitness,SensibleLiving,EffectiveSpeaking,AircraftIdentification,AeronauticalFacilities,Airframes,AircrewSurvival,andRange/Shooting.Levels(Level1,Level2,Level3,Level4,Level5).Acadetwillusuallycompleteoneproficiencyleveleachcalendaryear;however,therecanbeexceptions.Eachproficiencylevelbuildsontheknowledgeandskillsofpreviouslevel.FirstyearcadetsmustbegintheirtrainingpriortoJanuary31st,toqualifyforadvancementtothenextlevelinthefall.CadetsstartingafterJanuary31st,willremainintheircurrentlevelinthefall.Allcadetsarerequiredtoparticipateinfieldtrainingexercises,communityserviceactivities,andfundraising.Mandatoryeventsinclude:BattleofBritain,PoppySales/Tagging(RoyalCanadianLegion),RemembranceDayParade,TagDays,andAnnualCeremonialReview.
13.FieldTrainingExercise(FTX)FieldTrainingExercises(FTX)areoff-sitecampingeventsthatgenerallyoccuroveraweekend.Therearemultiple–mandatoryandoptional–FTXsthroughouttheyear,eachwithaspecifictrainingfocus:Somepertaintothecadet’slevel,otherspertaintoskills,suchasmarksmanship(shootinganairrifle).YourcadetwillberequiredtoattendatleastoneFTX(andusuallymore,oncehe/shemovesupinlevel/rank).CadetsarriveatadesignatedmeetingareaontheFridayevening(lateafternoon)andaretransportedtothetrainingareasinChilliwack,BCbycharterbus.TheyreturnonSundayafternoon.AllmealsareprovidedintheformofMealsReadytoEat(MRE).Cadetssleepinlargetentsof20-30cadetsorinsmallersheltersof2-3cadetseach,dependingontheexercise.CadetswillbeinformedofanexercisethroughaWarningOrder,whichoutlinesalldetails,itinerary,contactinfo,andkitlists.Themandatorykitlistmayvarydependingontheexercise;followingisanexample.

14.WhatisaWarningOrder?WarningOrders–issuedtocadetsforFTXs,events,trips,etc.–aredocumentsintendedtoclearlycommunicatetoparentsandcadets,theinformationofanevent.Thisdocumentmayincludesectionssuchas:eventdetailsanditinerary,contactinformation,groundrulesandexpectations,directions,amandatoryandoptionalkitlist,andmedicalquestionnaire/consentformtobereturnedpriortoevent.WarningOrderswillbehandedoutinprintontrainingnightsandaregenerallyavailableonthesquadronFacebookpage.

15.OptionalTrainingInadditiontomandatorytrainingactivities,cadetsareencouragedtoparticipateinoptionalprogramsofinteresttothem.Theseinclude:
MarchingBandInterestedcadetsshouldcontactanOfficerorSeniorCadet.Priorknowledgeofmusicisanassetbutnotmandatory.EffectiveSpeakingCadetslearnhowtobuildconfidenceandspeakfluentlyinfrontofthepublic.FlagPartyCadetslearntheproperprocedureforcarryingtheflagsduringtheregularparadenightandspecialevents.GroundSchoolLevel/agerestricted,weeklyclassesareheldfromOctobertoJanuary.Thisaviationstudypreparescadetsforthecompulsoryqualifyingexamsrequiredforscholarshipqualifications.PrecisionDrillTeamMarchingmovementsaretaught,andaspeciallyprepareddrillroutineislearnedforperformanceatcompetitionsandatthesquadron’sAnnualCeremonialReview(ACR).OpenRangeCadetslearnproficiencywithairrifles.SportsTeams Varioussquadronshostinter-squadronteam-sporttournaments,suchasbasketball,volleyball,dodgeballandsoccer.Teamsareformedandpracticesheld,roughlyamonthpriortotournamentdates.FirstAidFirstAidisavitalskill,notjustforcadetswhenonremoteexpeditions,butforeverydayuse.Theaimistoteachallcadetsbasicfirstaid,withtheoptiontostudyfurther.Familiarization(Fam)FlyingThisisthepartwherecadetsgettoFLY!Cadetshavetheopportunitytoexperiencebothnon-powered(glider)andpowered(familiarizationorfamflying)flights.Onweekends,weatherpermitting,qualifiedpilotstakecadetsglidingorflying.Famflightsaverageaboutthirtyminutesandallcadetsaregivenachancetobethe“co-pilot.”Flyingandglidinghappenatvariousdatesinthefallandspring.Whiletransportationto/fromtheactivityisgenerallynotprovided,theactualactivitycostissupportedbytheLeagueandSquadron.
16.WhataboutSummerTraining?CadetsjoiningpriortoDecember31ofatrainingyearmaybeeligibletoapplyforsummercamp(training).AcomponentoftheTrainingProgram,two-tosix-week-longsummertrainingcamps–heldatvariouslocationsacrossCanada–consistofcoursesaimedatsupportingandenhancingsquadrontrainingbyprovidingnewskills.Spaceislimited,andtherearemandatorycriteriathatacadetmustmeettobeeligibleforcampselection.SummerTrainingisarewardforcadetswhohavestrongattendanceandahighlevelofparticipation;however,aswithalloftheCadetTrainingProgram,cadetsshouldbewillingandabletoputinseriouseffortandcommitment.Familiesofcadetswhoareselectedforsummertrainingneedtobeawarethatonceloadedintoacourse,thespotcannoteasilybeswappedwithanothercadet,shouldselectedcadetchangehis/hermindormakeothersummerarrangements.Cadetswhoareselectedarenotifiedassoonaspossible,withtraveldatesusuallyconfirmedinJune;cadetswhoarenotselectedareplacedonawaitinglist,withastrongpossibilitythattheymaybeofferedalast-minuteselection.(It’simportantacadetlettheofficerinchargeofsummertrainingknowofanychangestohis/hersummerschedule/trainingavailability,shouldhe/shebeonawaitinglist.)Therewardsforsummertrainingaremanyandincludeamazinglearningopportunities,growthinindependenceskills,newfriendshipsandfuturerecommendationsforcoursesandopportunities.

18.PromotionsPromotiontotherankofLeadingAirCadetthroughtoWarrantOfficer1stClassisbasedonqualificationssetoutonanationalbasisbyNationalDefenseHeadquarters.Criteriaforpromotioninvolvestimeservedinrank,achievedtraininglevel,completionofcourses,attendance,andmerit.Whileacadetmaymeetqualificationstobepromoted,fortherankofSergeantandabove,thepromotioncanonlybehadifapositionisavailablewithinthequotaofaparticularrank.Furthermore,recommendationforcadetpromotionismadebysquadronstaffandcommitteemembers;actualdecisionofcadetpromotionlayswiththeCommandingOfficer.

19.ChainofCommand(COC)Thechainofcommandinaunitcanbeseenasthebackboneuponwhichallstructurerelies.Cadetsbelongtoflights;flightshaveflightstaffandsectionleaders.Thechainofcommandworkssuchthatallmembersofaflighthavesomeonetoreportto,andtoaskquestionsof.Belongingtoaflight,yourchildwillbeassignedasectionleaderwhowillcallweeklytocommunicateeventdetailsandofferyourchildtheopportunitytoaskquestions.His/hersectionleadershouldbeyourchild’sprimarypointofcontact.Allcadetsareencouragedto,first,directquestionstotheirpeersandothercadetsintheirflightortheirlevel,andthentomoveupthechainbycallingthesectionleader,andsoon.Becauseofthischain,allquestionsareansweredatthelowestlevelpossible.SectionleadershaveaccesstoFlightNCOs(non-commissionedofficer)andotherresourcestoobtaininformationandtoanswersquestionsacadetmayhave.Itmaybedifficultforanewcadettoadjusttothisstructure,butitservestosharetasks,unifytheflight,teach,andofferopportunitiesforgrowth.
20.WhatistheAnnualCeremonialReview(ACR)UsuallyheldinMayorJune,theAnnualCeremonialReview(ACR)isconsideredthemostimportanteventoftheAirCadettrainingyear.Amandatoryevent,itistheopportunityforcadetstodisplaywhattheyhavelearnedoverthecourseoftheyear–toincludeband,drill,andsportpresentations.Alongwithfamilies,guests,andmilitarydignitaries,aReviewingOfficerisinvitedtoinspectthecadetsaspartoftheparade.A“LeagueInspector”(fromBCProvincialLeague)isalsoappointedtoreviewandmark/rankthesquadrononitsexecutionoftheACR(whichincludesreceivingofficialreportingdocumentsfromSSCpertainingtoSSCfunctionsthroughtheyear).Awardsarepresentedtocadets.Andvisualdisplaysdepictingthevariousaspectsoftrainingandeventsthroughtheyearareavailableforviewingduringashortreceptionfollowingtheparade.
21.TheAirCadetLeagueofCanadaTheAirCadetLeagueofCanadaisacivilianorganizationthatworkscloselywiththeDepartmentofNationalDefense(DND).TheDNDisresponsibleforprovidingofficers,training,uniforms,summercamp,administrationandorganizationofthesquadron.TheAirCadetLeagueofCanadaisresponsibleforpublicrelationswithinthecommunity;providingtrainingequipment,insuranceandguidancetosquadronsacrossCanada.TheAirCadetLeagueofCanadaiscomprisedofthreelevelsofadministration:national,provincial,andlocal(throughSquadronSponsoringCommittees).TheNationallevelmaintainsafull-timeheadquartersinOttawa.TheBritishColumbiaProvincialCommitteeislocatedat7630MontrealStreet,Unit2,Delta,BC.ThedutiesoftheProvincialCommitteeincludesupervisionofsquadronactivitieswithinitsboundary,assistingintheformationofnewsquadrons,andguidancetoSquadronSponsoringCommittees.
22.888AvengerSquadronSponsoringCommittee888AvengerSquadronSponsoringCommittee(SSC)isanincorporatednon-profitsociety.In2000,theProvincialCommitteevotedtoincorporateallParent/SquadronSponsoringCommitteeswithinBC.EachsquadronnowhasaBoardofDirectors,whichgovernstheParent/SquadronSponsoringCommittee.TheSSCisdescribedasthebackboneofthecadetorganization,becausethesuccessofanAirCadetSquadronisdependentontheorganizationalabilityandeffectivenessofthiscommittee.Membersareusuallycadetparents,whojoin/belongtotheRoyalCanadianAirCadetLeagueofCanada.Allmembersgothroughascreeningprocess,whichincludesacriminalrecordscheck.Membersmayparticipateatvariouslevels,includingaspartofsub-committeesoraselectedBoardofDirectors(electedatanAnnualGeneralMeeting).TheBoardofDirectors(Executives)managestheoverallaffairsoftheSociety.Theseexecutivesmeetonceamonthtoreviewfinancialstatements,docorrespondence,andplanandcoordinateupcomingevents.Theyalsoimplementpoliciesandworkdirectlywiththeofficers,civilianstaff,andcadetsonanon-goingbasis.AllmembersarevolunteersandarenotpaidorcompensatedforthemanyhourstheycommittoourSquadron.

SquadronSponsoringCommitteeresponsibilitiesinclude:• organizingsocialeventsforcadetsand/orparents• budgetingforandpayingallcostsassociatedwiththesquadronoperationsthatare
