1.0 INTRODUCTION

First and foremost we at NDT Systems, Inc would like to thank you for your purchase of the NEWAvenger EZ full featured miniature A-Scan Flaw Detector incorporating general purpose ThicknessGaging capability.

As you may have concluded, this manual contains a lot of various information. You do not

necessarily have to read the whole manual in order to use the Avenger EZ. Much of theinformation is presented in a tutorial fashion to aid in the understanding of specific applications.

C  The Table of Contents of this manual is actually a TABLE/INDEX. Each menu item ismentioned here for quick easy access to a description of the menu item you may have aquestion with.

C Chapter 2 deals with the menu, structure a description of the features. This would berecommended reading. There are a few images to help you better understand theconcepts.

C Chapter 3 & 4 is where the features are described in more detail through tutorials onvarious methods of operation. You will also find this chapter help teach how to select thebest transducer for the application. Keep in mind that the proper transducer selection ISthe heart of the inspection, and the key to optimum performance of the Avenger EZ’s (orany other ultrasonic instrument’s) use. The wrong transducer can be compared to putting a2" speaker on a 100 watt Macintosh receiver/amp in a stereo system. It may be the bestsystem but it’s going to sound lousy!

used if there were a complex setup where it may take more time to Change all the parametersrather than start from scratch or default.

In these instructions, the notation used to indicate positioning the cursor on an item will be shown. The box drawn around the menu or function item indicates that the operator should key the cursorto that item, or that the item is already cursored by virtue of a programmed default.

1.4 Transducers and Reference Standards .Section 3.0, Transducer Selection, contains detailed information regarding the selection andapplication of ultrasonic transducers for use with The Avenger EZ. For best results, usetransducers from the OPTIMA line of transducers produced by NDT Systems, Inc. A free catalogwill be sent on request by contacting Customer Information at NDT Systems, Inc., 17188Georgetown Lane, Huntington Beach, CA 92647, phone (714) 893-2438, FAX (714) 897-3840. Inmany cases, equivalent transducers produced by other manufacturers will also yield acceptableresults.

It should be kept in mind, though, that no matter how capable the ultrasonic instrument, systemperformance and test results are highly dependent upon the characteristics, performance, andappropriate selection of the transducers used. Also, The Avenger EZ incorporates an automatic

probe recognition feature where many NDT Systems, Inc., Nova transducers will be recognizedand a basic instrument setup invoked for the specific transducer type.

Many common reference standards are also available from NDT Systems, Inc. For customreference standards or test blocks, contact Customer Information at the address on the cover.

2.0 MENU DESCRIPTIONS

One of the significant features of the Avenger EZ is the Direct Access Keypad. Velocity, Zeroand Gain are just a single keystroke away. There are also 2 option keys. Opt2 is predefined as A-

 Trace split. Opt1 is reserved for future use.

2.1 MENU FLOW

 The following represents the menu flow of the Avenger EZ. Pressing the MENU/ESC keyrepeatedly will sequence through the menus as shown.

With limited space available, some menu items are abbreviated. None-the-less, abbrevia-tions and acronyms represent terms familiar to qualified ultrasonic NDT personnel. Avenger EZ isbased upon a powerful microcomputer, combining the absolute latest in high-speed digitalelectronics technology and high capability ultrasonic instrument features. Avenger EZ softwarehas been designed with the needs of NDT personnel foremost in mind; complex, computer-liketerminology and operations have been purposely avoided. The following is a description of eachMenu item(s) and its associated sub-functions.

2.2 MENUSMenu items are arranged Horizontally along the bottom margin of the display as shown in Figure2.1. Whenever a Menu is displayed, an active A-trace is also displayed. The highlighted menuitem can either be selected (to reveal related sub-functions) or changed by appropriate keying of the arrow keys. In some highlighted Menu items, variables can be changed without having toselect sub-functions. These items will display a Upon its selection. If an item has a sub menuselection the display will read “ENTER TO SELECT”

MAIN MENU (MENU/ESC Keypad Selection)

 The functions grouped in the MAIN menu are used to select Avenger EZ basic setup parameters. These items are logically among the first to be addressed during a new setup. Last setup/factory

default values are automatically displayed. Even though the defaults permit many kinds of ultrasonic tests using many kinds of transducers to be successfully performed, highly precise flawdetection tests may require refinements to the default variables to better matchtransducer/instrument characteristics.

GAIN - Available via KEYPAD Adjustment OnlyUsed to adjust the amplitude of the A-trace display. Increasing or Decreasing the GAIN willcause the A-trace signal to increase or decrease in amplitude. (Directly Adjustable via up ordown arrow)

MAIN MENU

CAL - MENU Call to:

ZERO ADJUST (Zero)A fine delay function which allows for compensation of transducer wearsurfaces, couplingmembranes and angle beam wedge. Adjustment is continuous from 0 to 20,000 nanosec-

onds. (Directly Adjustable via up or down arrow)

VELOCITY (VEL)Sets the material velocity (inches/microsecond or mm/microsecond) used in calculations of thickness. NOTE: The VELOCITY value will be decreased by approximately one-half fromreference velocity when ANGLE MODE is selected. (Directly Adjustable via up or downarrow)

DELAY (DELAY)Used to adjust the start of the A-trace display along the horizontal axis. Gates that aresynchronized with the A-trace will also delay accordingly. (Directly Adjustable via up ordown arrow)

RANGE (RANGE)Used to determine how much time (distance) is represented on the horizontal axis of the A-trace display. Increasing or Decreasing the RANGE will cause the A-trace display toexpand or contract. (Directly Adjustable via up or down arrow)

 AUTOTRACK (TRAK)With this feature you can turn the AutoTrack feature ON or OFF.

When AutoTrack is ON, the Track window will follow the echo at the point of thicknesstrigger. This is where the Threshold line triggers on the echo. The Gage will automatically

center the echo in the center of the Track window regardless of the actual thickness beingmeasured.

When AutoTrack is OFF the Track window does not follow the echo but rather defines anarea of Zoom which will not operate in a dynamic fashion. In this regard, the echo will moveleft or right throughout the Track window. If the echo moves outside the area defined by thevertical cursors there will be no echo displayed on the lower screen.

RANGE2 & DELAY2 These controls adjust the independent time base Range & Delay for the Tracking window. The total Range for the Track window can not exceed the set Range of the Main Tracewindow. For instance if the Main Trace is set to 3" the Track window can not be set to 4".

Usually the Track window is something like 20-40% of the Main Trace window. Thisoperates with AutoTrack Mode ON or OFF.

THICKNESS - Menu Call to:

THRESHOLD (THRESH)Allows Increase or Decrease the Measurement Threshold level. Any echo or echohalf cycle with amplitude equal to or greater than the Thickness Gate Threshold will be

measured. The threshold gate is the bar on the left of the A-Trace frame extending tothe first echo in the figure. (Directly Adjustable via up or down arrow)

ECHO (ECHO)Allows the selection of a multiple echo from which the thickness measurement willbegin. For instance, 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd and so on. Up to the fifth multiple echo can beselected.

IP BLOCKING GATE (IPBLk)Used to Increase or Decrease the length of the gate that is used to block out anyunwanted signals after the Main Bang (Initial Pulse ) . Adjustment of the IP BLOCK-ING GATE will allow proper setup for IP to first back echo measurement in thethickness mode.

IF BLOCKING GATE (IFBLk)Used to Increase or Decrease the length of the gate that is used to block out anyunwanted signals between the first back echo (IF) and the second back echo. Properadjustment of the IF BLOCKING GATE will allow measurement of the first back echoto the second back echo in the thickness mode.

ECHO BLOCKING GATE (ECHO-BLK)Allows Increase or Decrease the length of the echo blocking gate that is used to blockout any unwanted signals between multiple echos in the thickness mode.

 ALARM - Menu Cal l to:

THK-ALM -Turns Thickness Alarms on, LO, HIGH, BOTH & off LOW - Only values at or below the low thickness setting will trigger the alarmlight.

HIGH - Only values at or above the high thickness setting will trigger thealarm light.

BOTH - Values at or below or above the low/Hi thickness setting will triggerthe alarm light.

LO - Sets Low thickness alarm point

HI - Sets High thickness alarm point

TIME - Sets alarm dwell time from 0.1 seconds to 10 seconds or manual reset

 AMP-ALM - N/A in Thickness Mode

MEASUREMENT RANGE (MEAS-RNG)Measurement Time is a unique feature generally used in Delay Line Transducer

Measurements. In the figure to the left we have used a standard NDT Systems, D11 Transducer. Currently the gage is triggering on the 2nd delay line multiple which is of novalue and could potentially cause operator confusion when actual measurementsapproach the delay end. Therefore, the MEAS-TIM control acts like a blocking gateexcept but acts on the tail end of the measured zone. The area we highlighted in the

figure is an area to block out. When this is done, any time the probe is coupled it willread over range rather than a fixed reading to the delay end.

IP SUPPRESSION (IP-SUP)Frequently transducers exhibit a broad roll off at the Initial Pulse. The IP Suppressioncan frequently compensate for this thereby permitting measurements closer the initialpulse when in Contact Mode. In many cases, a fine tuned setup will permit readings as

thin as 0.020" using a 5 MHz 1/4" Transducer.

 AUTOMATIC GAIN CONTROL (AGC) - AVAILABLE ONLY IN THICKNESS MODEA unique feature of the Avenger EZ is the Automatic Gain Control. This control is isunder hardware control and is fully automatic. The usefulness of this feature would beevident on material with varied attenuation properties such as painted and non paintedsurfaces or corroded back surfaces. AGC may also help overall reading accuraciesdue to the fact that the thickness gate will be reading to the same height on the echo“flank” (first rising edge). It is generally not acceptable to use AGC with Dual Element

 Transducers used for corrosion surveys.

FLAW LINEAR (FLAW-LIN) Menu Call to:

Flat Gate for measuring amplitude levels within the gate start and stop points.

START - Sets amplitude gate Start Point

END - Sets amplitude gate Stop Point

THRESHOLD (THRESH)Allows Increase or Decrease the Measurement Threshold level. Any echo or echohalf cycle with amplitude equal to or greater than the Gate Threshold will be measured

and/or alarmed on.

 AMPLITUDE ALARM (AMP-ALM)

FLAW - Distance Amplitude Gating (FLW-DAG)FLAW-DAG permits the user to set a non-linear or Curved gate to help compensate for theloss in echo height as a function of depth related attenuation. Generally speaking mostmaterials will attenuate (lose sound amplitude) the sound level from a similar sized defectas a function of depth within the material. DAG allows the user to set variable amplitudegate levels as a function of distance thereby producing a gate somewhat curved in appear-ance.

HOLD 2 SEC - Captures and displays the peak echo envelope for a period of 2 seconds. After this time the envelope reduces (washes) to the baselineagain. Useful in temporarily holding echo results as the user continuesscanning.

HOLD CONT - Captures and holds the echo envelope, continuously adjustingit for any echo peak over the last displayed value. If the echo never exceeds

the displayed echo envelope the envelope will not be adjusted.

POINT NUMBER (PT#) - The user is permitted from 2 to 10 points with which to drawthe DAG Gate Curve. The user can return and refine any set point position if needed.

X - Defines the X, or horizontal starting position for the point number selected PointNumber within or between any 2 points. For instance, point #3's position can not crossover point 4's position. It will always be between 2 and 4 and will not move either of these points.

Y - Defines the Y or Vertical point position for the selected point.

 ADD - Will add a point between the current and next point or after the last point if selected. For example, if you have 8 total points and point 3 is currently selected, whenadd is pressed a point will be placed between 3 and 4, moving the previous 4 toposition 5. X & Y may then be used to refine position of the new point.

ERASE - Will delete the currently selected point. Any point after the deleted point willbe renumbered to Point#N-1

THICK-FLAWDisplays both the last FLAW setting (FLAW-LIN or FLAW-DAG Gate) and the thicknessmeasurement blocking and measurement gate on the same screen along with theirassociate thickness and amplitude values at the top of the screen.

It is important to remember that the FLAW mode combined with thickness will be the lastselected flaw mode. If FLAW-DAG were the last used, that will be the combined mode. If the

user desires the FLAW-LIN be displayed, select FLAW-LIN from the MODE menu thenFLAW-THICK and then the Linear or FLAT gate will be displayed.

SHEARWAVE Trigonometry (SHEAR) - Sets the Avenger EZ into a mode wherebyautomatic Trigonometric Calculations are performed to assist in locating flaws when usingangle beam transducers, typically used in weld inspection.

 ANGLE - Used to set the angle of the wedge in use for inspection to within 0.1Degreesfrom 0 to 90 degrees

MATERIAL THICKNESS -( MATL-THK) - Used to enter the material thickness undertest. This is used to calculate the reflection leg or skip.

SURFACE DISTANCE OFFSET (SD-OFFSET) - The distance from the wedge indexpoint to the end of the wedge in use. This makes user measurement from transducerto flaw location with respect to inspection surface location. For example, the user couldsimply use a ruler to measure from the end of the wedge to the flaw’s location in frontof it.

ZERO ADJUST (Zero)A fine delay function which allows for compensation of transducer wearsurfaces,coupling membranes and angle beam wedge. Adjustment is continuous from 0 to20,000 nanoseconds. (Directly Adjustable via up or down arrow)

SINGLE/DUAL (SING/DUAL)Used to select transducer type. Options are single or dual element. Dual can also be usedfor thru transmission applications

DAMPING (DAMP)

Changes receiver damping through these values : 25, 50, 75, 100, 125, 150, 175 and 375ohms. As each new value is switched in, the effect on the waveform in the A-trace displaycan be observed. Use Damping to visually optimize the receiver / transducer performance

CONTACT / DELAY MODE (CONT/DLY)Contact or Delay style transducer. Must be in SINGLE Element Mode for Delay Menuselection

RECEIVER (RCVR) - Main Menu Selecti on - Menu Call to:NOTE: Thickness measurements are permitted in RF RECTIFICATION as well as +HW, -HW orFW. Polarity bar indicator will also indicate appropriate half of the display when in RF mode.

RECTIFICATION (RECT)Sets the rectification mode for the echo signal on the A-trace display. Four selectablewaveform types scan be displayed :

+HW - Positive half-wave rectified+HW when selected, displays only the positive portion of the RF signal on the A-tracedisplay.

- HW - Negative half-wave rectified- HW when selected, displays only the negative portion of the RF signal on the A-tracedisplay.

FW - Fullwave rectifiedFW when selected, displays a superimposed -HW signal on a +HW signal on the A-trace display.

RF - Non rectified radio-frequency RF when selected, displays both the +HW and -HW signals, non-rectified, at 50%screen height.

POLARITYSelects thickness trigger to either Positive or Negative half wave.HINT: Select the half cycle which exhibits the strongest first half cycle throughout the

calibration range.

DAMPING (DAMP)Changes receiver damping through these values : 25, 50, 75, 100, 125, 150, 175 and375 ohms. As each new value is switched in, the effect on the waveform in the A-tracedisplay can be observed. Use Damping to visually optimize the receiver / transducerperformance

GAIN INCREMENT (GAIN-INC)Allows the user to select the gain increase value when the front panel gain button ispressed. For example, if set to 0.1dB then if the gain was set at 50dB the nex buttonpress would be 50.1dB. If set to 1.0 then the next value from 50dB would be 51dB etc.

+dB INCREMENT (+dB-INC)Sets the value the front panel keypad +dB key will increase gain by. If the front panelkey were pressed again the +dB value would be returned to the user’s base gain

setting. An indicator to the right of the displayed GAIN value will display the current+dB increased value is in use.

FILTER Turns the band pass filter on or off at the user’s option. Broad band filter is centered at5MHz. Useful in “cleaning” up baseline noise as needed

DISPLAY Main Menu Selection - Menu Call to:

CONTRAST (CONTRAST)Using the up and down arrow keys, adjust the display to provide optimal personalviewing.

FREEZE (FREEZE)

Freeze, when selected, instantly freezes the screen and displays the following menuselections below. Freeze is also available as a front panel keypad, direct and immedi-ate freeze function then bringing the user to the same menu below for disposition.

RESUME - Selecting resume simply resumes the live display and returns theuser to the DISP LAY sub-menu.

SAVE - Provides a means to save the frozen display along with up to 8 linesof 30 character user comments. When selected, saves the screen with thecurrent default name such as A-Scan#1, A-scan#2 and so on.

EDIT - Brings up a screen displaying a graphic keyboard for user file

naming of up to 30 characters. Additionally, the user can add up to8 lines of 30 character notes. This information can then be down-loaded to a PC via an optional data transfer program and cable.Contact NDT Systems for information. Press MENU/ESC to returnto the save screen and select save with this new information if desired.

CAPTURE - Captures and freezes the screen for echos at or above80% - Useful in spot weld inspection

HOLD 2 SEC - Captures and displays the peak echo envelope for aperiod of 2 seconds. After this time the envelope reduces (washes)to the baseline again. Useful in temporarily holding echo results asthe user continues scanning.

HOLD CONT - Captures and holds the echo envelope, continuouslyadjusting it for any echo peak over the last displayed value. If theecho never exceeds the displayed echo envelope the envelope willnot be adjusted.

BACKLIGHT (BKLT) Turns the backlight to AUTO, ON or OFF. Auto will turn the backlight on while makingmeasurements. OO will turn the backlight on continuously and OFF will leave thebacklight off at all time. It is recommended to leave the setting set to off if using thegage in high ambient light conditions. This will conserve battery life. You will not noticeany better viewing while having the backlight on in high ambient light conditions.

Note the figure to the left. You will note there are twotraces annotated ‘A’ & ‘B’. The top trace ‘A’ is calledthe MAIN Trace Window. The Lower Trace, ‘B’ isknown as the Tracking Window. Also, take note of the Vertical Cursors. The area between theseCursors is the section of the echo which will be auto-matically Zoomed as well as Tracked. Meaning, as

the echo moves left and right on the Main Trace, theactual area of the echo is Tracked to show the half cycle the gage is triggering on.

LOG Key - Front Panel

 The log key permits the user to store A-Traces and B-Scans for recall and review at a laterdate. As the Avenger EZ does not log thickness reading as a grid or linearly as is intendedprimarily as a general purpose flaw detector. The Nova TG410 from NDT Systems, Inc is aprecision, very full featured thickness gage incorporating a comprehensive data loggershould requirements dictate storage of specific thickness values. When the key is pressed Gainwill be added by this parameter with a +xdB (X=user set value) indication on the GAIN lineof the Avenger’s display. Pressing the key again will return to the standard gain mode.

19. Both LO-THK and HI-THK function in the same manner. These selections represent lowthickness alarm and high thickness alarm, respectively. They can be used to alert theoperator (through the front panel visual LED) when pre-set thickness levels, low, high orboth low and high, have been exceeded. The level sets are scrolled when the Up or Downarrow keys are depressed. With the cursor at the STATUS position, arrow keys select thealarm system (visual LED) on and off. In gaining familiarization with these features, notethat it is not possible to "cross" these levels. That is, the high alarm setting cannot be setlower than the low alarm setting and vice-versa.

ZERO & VELOCITY The next two functions, VEL and ZERO are adjustments necessary to "calibrate" the gageto the accurately measure the thickness of the specific material under test.

In our example, using a 0.500 inch thickness step, we have yet to perform any operationsto "calibrate" the Thickness readout. Most probably the reading is close to 0.500 inch,since the FACTORY setup defaults are deliberately designed to produce nearly correctcalibration for a contact transducer being used on steel having longitudinal sound velocityof 0.2330 inches/microsecond.

21. As a first step in becoming familiar with the VEL and ZERO functions, lets complete thecalibration for thickness measurement using the step block in our example.

VEL - Set the cursor at VEL and adjust it to 2330 In/us (Steel velocity).

ZERO - Using the Left/Right arrow, reposition it at ZERO, probe zero control position.Using the Up/Dn arrow keys adjust the thickness reading to 0.500". When 0.500 inch [orwhatever the known actual thickness of the step] is achieved in Thickness readout, theupper range calibration is complete. Note that zero may change through up to 5 or 10counts (on the display) before the indicated thickness changes. Choosing zero roughly atthe mid-point of the range needed to move from 0.499 inch to 0.501 inch. This procedurecan improve thickness gaging precision.

22. Remove the transducer from the 0.500 inch step and couple it to the other steps on theblock. If the test block has been accurately measured and the material is steel with aVELOCITY (VEL) of 0.2330 in/us, the other step measurements should be within ±0.001inch of the actual measured values and reproducible.

21. If some material other than steel is used, a differentprocedure will be required. For a transducer of similartype as used in these procedures, reset the ZERO toapproximately that of the default (130). Depress the uparrow key to position the cursor at VEL (velocity). Withthe transducer coupled to the thickest step, use the Up& Down arrow keys to increase/Decrease the velocityuntil the known thickness of the material is displayed onthe thickness readout.

Now couple the transducer to the thinnest step. If 

thickness readout does not agree with the knownthickness, reposition the cursor at ZERO and use the Upor Down arrow keys to produce the known thickness onthe thickness readout.

 Then, again check the thickest step. If thickness readoutstill does not agree with known thickness, reposition the cursor at VEL (velocity) and usethe Up or Down arrow keys to obtain the known thickness.

Continued adjustments between ZERO and VELOCITY will produce correct thicknessreadout on both the thickest and thinnest steps. At this point, the steps in between willread correctly [within the resolution, ±0.001 inch]. The velocity value below VEL is the

velocity of the material of the specific material of block under test.

A short-cut in the calibration routine for metals other than steel is to scroll the value at VELto the nominal velocity for that material. Velocity values are tabulated in a variety of publications, including NDT Systems, Inc.' OPTIMA transducer catalog.

NOTE : to measure to thinnest step on the block it may be necessary toadjust IP-BLK as per step 15 above

Repeat until satisfied.Under most conditions you should not have to go through the extra steps.

11. Once calibrated press the B-SCAN Key.

12. Cursor to TYPE and use the Up & Dn arrows to select T-SCAN. This will provide a CrossSection view of the area being inspected.

13. Move the Cursor to Select POS on the Menu.14. Use the Up & Dn arrows to select ENCODED L-R or any other desired plotted motion.15. Place the cart on a surface to be inspected and the pointer above the B-SCAN graphic

screen should move with the movement of the scanner.16. Adjust the SCALE as desired to either speed up the motion (less distance information) on

the screen or slow down the motion (more info on screen).17. Finally, re-check your gain for the material you re testing to be sure you are receiving good

echo height to trigger the gage. If the gain is too low, there will be dropout (white or blankareas) on the B-SCAN. If the B-Scan shows the same number all the time be sure thegage is not continuously triggered on surface noise of some sort.

11. Set ECHO to IP-1st12. ESC the THICKNESS menu and sel FLAW-LIN if 

needed to set the flaw gate in position.13. ESC the FLAW-LIN menu and select SHEAR14. Assure ANGLE, MATL-THK and SD-OFFSET are as

originally set15. Select VELOCITY and adjust PATH to read 1.000" as

the distance from echo 1 to echo 2.16. ESC to THICKNESS Menu and set ECHO to IP-1st17. ESC and set MOE to SHEAR18. Without moving probe, adjust ZERO to attain a Path

reading of 1.000". Since we know the VELOCITY is setcorrectly for the material using Echo to Echo toeliminate variables in the wedge and probe, thisprocess will adjust the excess transit time (zero) toeliminate the wedge and transducer face thickness fromthe total sound path travel

19. Once the ZERO is adjusted to attain 1.000", slide thetransducer assembly to read only the 2" radius. If thecalibration was done properly you should be very closeto the 2.000" Path (soundpath) +/- any variation whenyou moved the probe over.

20. From here, you are ready to adjust MATL-THK to the

thickness of the material under test. As the material getsthinner you may note the LEG count increase anddecrease as you scan indicating the skip path.

6.0 BATTERY PACK AND CHARGER

 The Avenger EZ is powered by 3 or 6 NiMH Rechargable ‘AA’ style batteries inserted into thebottom panel via the rear panel access cap(s). The gage is charged via an external battery

charger. Once fully charged the Avenger EZ will run for up to 12+hours (if all 6 batteries areinstalled) before requiring another charge. Charge time is 4-8 hours for a full charge from emptydepending on the number of batteries installed..

 The Avenger EZ is also capable of running from Alkaline batteries, available from many outlets,should you need to use the unit where remote power for charging is not available

IMPORTANT

.If the charger/eliminator is plugged in, as the alkaline batteries are installed damage to the gageby leaking batteries will be likely. The damage is obvious and is not covered under warranty.

Batteries are to be installed with the tip facing into the gage. Installing the batteries in the wrongwill cause damage to the gage.

In addition to NDT Systems, Inc.' OPTIMA transducers, cables, reference standards andother transducer accessories, the following optional Avenger EZ accessories are available:
