On Sunday, November 4, the church school class will put on a simple puppet play during worship. The script is simple enough that no lines need to be mem-orized; the goal is to have a cute show with as little stress as possible. Children should arrive by 9:45 a.m. if they plan to be a part of the play.

Christmas PageantSunday, December 9 10:00 a.m., SanctuarySome years ago, I worked at a church that had a won-derful and well-attended Christmas Pageant. The children of the church very much looked forward to being in the Pageant, as they do here at RHCC. I asked the middle school-aged youth “Why do we give gifts at Christmas?” I was hoping to hear at least one of two answers: because God gave us baby Jesus, or because the Magi brought gifts to the baby Jesus. Sadly, despite being in the Pageant every year of their lives, the youth were not able to come up with these answers. This told me, as an educator, not to assume that if children were performing and saying the words they would automatically understand the meaning and intent of the words they were saying.

So, as we prepare for the Pageant beginning November 18, we will also be studying a unit called “Journey to Bethlehem.” The children will:

Thanks to RHCC member Kerri Ann Hofer’s sug-gestion, I am now an occasional blogger for the Greenwich Patch, an online newspaper covering lo-/$1)(&"%',() V;%,,!+'/0K#$&/0K/"3WK) 9)+'11)6,)+%'&'!;)articles on faith formation and youth ministry, as well as submitting promos for RHCC events. Faith-based Youth Groups Provide “Downtime” for Teens

Robert was not the only youth who loved this annual trip. Thirteen-year-old Anna shared how the trip was a rare time away from her rigorous swimming schedule, and while she excelled at the sport, she didn’t like it all that much. She swam because her mother wanted her to. She wished she had more time to be with the youth group. Eleven-year-old Cassie threw a tantrum when her parents would not allow her to attend the

Initially, a tired and overbooked young person may see the faith-based youth group as “one more thing” taking away from precious downtime at home. But my experience has been that over time, teens dis-cover that the supportive and fun time they have in a youth group actually energizes them and sends them into the world more ready to face it. A few parents have reported to me how their child’s grades im-proved dramatically because of their involvement in youth group. One father became, and still is, a very active member of his church because of the positive changes he saw in his boys, who grew into leadership positions because of the youth group. Faith-based youth groups do not bench, do not charge fees, do not train kids for multimillion-dollar professions. Their value cannot be measured, but it is palpable. Fortunately, as far as I can see, Green-wich is blessed with caring, capable youth ministers and leaders. LES BEAUX ARTS GALLERY

A wide variety of fine Haitian painting, sculp-ture, steel drum metalwork, and objets d’art are on exhibit and on sale during “Art for Education: Haitian Art Show to Benefit Haiti Lumiere de Demain” at Les Beaux Arts Gallery now through Sunday, November 18. Art for Education combines renowned and lo-cal Haitian artists, working in a variety of media, to present a picture of Haiti’s present, past, and future. The paintings are whimsical with vibrant colors, and the subjects relate to everyday life. The display also includes handmade papier mâché from Jacmel, the village of artisans famous for their elaborate papier mâché carnival masks as well as beautiful handmade metalwork with intricate designs, which were coaxed out of recycled oil drums, using hammers and chisels.

Haiti, a country most known for its abject poverty, uncertain politics, and the recent catastrophic earth-quake, has an extraordinarily rich culture, history, and tradition. Listen to those who seek your vote and hear what is being expressed behind the words they use. Remember that the election is not only for us, but for all those who come after us, our children and grandchildren, those near to us, and those we

will never know. Be willing to set aside self-interest for the interests of all. Be guided by the truth that we are here to serve others. To all Christians, remem-ber the words of Jesus in his darkest hour, alone and afraid in the Garden of Gethsemane, yet praying to God: ‘Not my will but thine be done.’” Yes, people of faith should with one voice ask God to bless this great nation, mending her every -$+) $!*) $!"'!&'!;) 0,%) !"&) ="%) (#,/'$1) &%,$&3,!&)within the family of nations, but anointing her with wisdom, courage and humility for the sake of all, all Americans, and all people everywhere. Amen.
