District Governor 2011-2012

Governor’s Letter

To My Rotary Friends -

Having the Rotary Year run from July 1 to June 30 is causing a lot of confusion. Therefore, the RI Board of Directors decided at its last meeting to have the Rotary Year run with the calendar year from January 1 to December 31. To bridge the gap, the 2011-12 Rotary leadership is asked to serve an extra 6 months in their current leadership positions. The current 2012-13 leadership will take office on January 1, 2013 instead of July 1, 2012.

Rotary wants to be perceived as a service club with younger members. In order to achieve that, we are asking the club secretaries to automatically add 5 years to the birth year of every future new member. This way the calculated average age of the club members will be significantly lower. Since this would be unfair to the current older members we ask that over the next 12 months all the older members resign from their club and rejoin straight away, with a modified birth year. Women will be allowed to do this twice.

Prompted by concern at the falling dollar, The Paul Harris Fellowship recognition level will be set at 1,000 Euros instead of $1,000. This measure is expected to raise an additional 30% for The Rotary Foundation in the long run. Members with a current recognition level of $1,000 to $1,299 will be asked to mail back their certificate, medal and pin to The Rotary Foundation, or send a check for the missing amount.

I am never sure how many actually READ the Governor’s newsletter; but if you have reached this point, you have undoubtedly realized that it is April 1 and I have been pulling your leg. (Most of this was borrowed from PDG Philippe Lamoise who used it in his Newsletter in April 2007). It is a great reminder that while Rotary is serious business, Rotarians don’t have to be.

The serious business of Rotary continues. Club Leadership has been educated at District Assembly to carry out their responsibilities. The District Council on April 10th will unveil the concept of an E-Rotary club that is currently underway in our District. Rotary International Director Ken Boyd will be the keynote speaker at our Model United Nations on April 14th. RYLA begins on Friday April 20. And our annual Rotarians at Work Day is on Saturday April 28.

Linda and I recently returned from an inspirational and energizing trip to the Asian sub-continent. We had the opportunity to participate at five Polio immunization sites in the outskirts of Lahore and Karachi in Pakistan. Sadly, the virus continues its stubborn ways and new cases were being reported even as we joined in the eradication efforts. We attended the District 3271 District Conference in Karachi and heard about their efforts to attain 95% literacy by 2017. And we travelled to District 3000 in South India to view progress on past club projects and to inaugurate new ones.

Thanks to the opportunities you have given us, Linda and I have met Rotarians from many lands – here in San Diego and around the world. Always, always, we walk away amazed how similar we Rotarians are under the skin. And always how lucky we are to be Rotarians in this great District.

Sincerely,

Larry Sun!am

On April 4th, 2010 a 7.2 earthquake hit the city of Mexicali, Mexico. It left hundreds injured, damaged 5,200, affected 35,000 people affected, and destroyed roads, highways, water irrigation systems and crops. The Rotary Club of Calexico quickly responded by contacting the Shelter Box program, which sent 260 tents to families in immediate need. The club then gathered and distributed food, water, blankets and medicines. They also gathered funds, including a large donation from the Sempra Energy Foundation. They were able to present $40,000 to the District 4100 for relief efforts in his district. Working with the club presidents in the affected area, the clubs decided to work on repairing damaged houses for the hardest hit families. Visiting these areas was very difficult, but they were able to visit and see the destroyed homes, wasted fields, dried out water sources, and children and the elderly suffering from the heat and circumstances. They asked families to apply for the aid, and chose 150 to begin with. They delivered the construction material to the families, which was received with enormous gratitude.

But the club did not stop there. They worked with the Mexican Government to match the funds that the Sempra Energy Foundation had donated, and were able to help another 150 families. They have also helped families with replacing lost belongings, clothing, food, seeds, and helped nursing homes with supplies, personal hygiene items for the patients, and air conditioning. They delivered backpacks, books and school materials to schools in the Mexicali Valley, and helped repair a roof at one school; provided language therapy assistance to a child who had cleft palate surgery. They also worked with the other Imperial Valley clubs to provide a mobile medical clinic.

During the festivities of the 75th anniversary of Rotary in Mexicali, the District 4100 Governor and 6 Rotary Club Presidents from Mexicali delivered to the Calexico club a special award, recognizing all the help that they had given, as well as recognizing the Calexico club for sponsoring the first club in Mexicali. The Calexico Club members are proud to be Rotarians, to be able to help all these people affected by this natural disaster to live with dignity and to unite two countries, two cities at both sides of the border, sharing ties of friendship, respect and good will.

International Service Help In The Philippines

Members of the San Diego Paradise Valley Rotary Club recently visited the Philippines, where they worked on three separate projects. They provided medical consultation, medicine, dental work and minor surgery to residents in four locations. Some visited the Shelter Box sites, where survivors of the flash floods, which took 1000 lives and left 280,000 homeless, were living as they began to rebuild their lives. Working in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Cagayan De Oro East Urban, they also distributed books and dictionaries to students in 4 schools, from 2nd through 6th grades. Each student received a dictionary donated by the San Diego Paradise Valley Rotary Club. The Paradise Valley club is proud to have bettered the lives of so many people in the Philippines, and hopes to continue their work there for years to come.

SARASOTA, Fla. March 5, 2012 – San Diego area volunteer, Peter Griffith and Rob Mullally were recognized by President Obama and ShelterBox USA with a Presidential Volunteer Service Award for his efforts during 2011 to provide shelter, warmth and dignity for survivors of natural and other disasters worldwide.

In the aftermath of disasters such as the Japan earthquake and tsunami last March, many watched on the television wishing they could make a difference. Griffith and Mullally knew ShelterBox, an international disaster relief charity, would be on the scene delivering it’s iconic green box containing a family tent, water purification, a cook set and stove along with other lifesaving supplies. Through their efforts of raising awareness and funds for ShelterBox, the organization was able to provide more than 17,600 ShelterBoxes to families throughout the world in 2011, including the tornadoes in the southern U.S., drought and famine in East Africa, widespread flooding in the Philippines and the subsequent earthquakes in Turkey.

“I am truly proud to honor our volunteers, who work hard year-round to support ShelterBox and our efforts to help families rebuild their lives across the globe,” said Emily Sperling, ShelterBox USA President. “It’s because of the continuous efforts of our volunteers such as Peter [and Rob] that we are able to help so many vulnerable families each year.”

The President’s Volunteer Service Award is a special recognition presented on behalf of President Barack Obama. The award is part of a national recognition program created in 2003 through the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation for individuals of all ages who contribute a significant amount of time to volunteer activities.

Club Service New Eco Rotary Club

The Solano Beach Eco Rotary Club is in the process of forming, is recruiting potential members, and has just found a new meeting place. They meet at the Center for Healthy Lifestyles, located west of the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Dieguito in Solano Beach, on Thursdays at 5:30 PM. They hope to charter in the near future. Their motto is Living in Harmony with Nature. "Our mission is to live sustainably and promote stewardship of the Earth through Rotary. As an Eco Rotary Club, our service focuses on how we - all of us - relate to each other and the living web of which we are a part. Ecology focuses on relationships between living organisms and their environment. While we share the growing concern that we are living beyond our means ecologically, we share in the vision that all Earth's inhabitants may enjoy a high quality of life in harmony with nature. Our intent is to understand the challenge of living sustainably, and to identify, implement and communicate best practices in our neighborhood and throughout Rotary." If you are interested in learning more about this emerging club, visit their web site at https://sbecorotary.org . If you have questions about the club, contact Bill Dean, President, [email protected] or Larry Jones, President Elect,[email protected]. You are also welcome to attend a meeting.

End Polio Now Rotary GlobalSwimarathon

The Rotary Global Swimarathon sets a new record and raises thousands of dollars to End Polio Now!

85 swimmers and Bruce, the dog swam 100 meters in ocean at La Jolla Shores between 0400-0500 on Saturday, February 25th to support End Polio Now! and to help establish a new Guinness Book of World Records for having the most people swimming at the exact same time in the water. This event was independent of the La Jolla Cove Swim Club but our full support was behind such a worthy cause.

During the swimarathon at least 15 time zones across the globe were represented. Over 100 Rotary Clubs on 6 continents and in 23 countries supported over 5,000 swimmers as they took part in this charity and record setting swim. Currently it is believed that in excess of $50,000 has been raised to End Polio Now!

The La Jolla Sunrise Rotary Club supplied the volunteer power to get the swimmers signed up for the swim and recorded properly for the Guinness Book of World Records. They also provide tasty treats and hot beverages for the swimmers. The San Diego Rotary Club along with the La Jolla Sunrise Rotary Club help to collect donations for End Polio Now! and at this point is seems a safe bet to say between the two Rotary Clubs over $6,000 has been donated!

Many of our swim buddies donated their time to act as our safety patrol by roaming the 100 meter course on kayaks and paddle boards.

And what more could we have asked for after our swim then to have a complimentary hot buffet breakfast waiting for everyone at Papalulu’s Restaurant!

Plans are already underway for another Rotary Global Swimarathon on February 23, 2013 so mark your calendar and plan to sleep in as it appears we may not be required to swim between 0400-0500.

By the way it is not too late to donate to End Polio Now!
